Let’s find out more about John and his book.

1)   Where is your home town?

I was born in Detroit Michigan in the US. I consider it my hometown even though I have not lived there for over fifty years. I have move around while being part of the business community. I now live in a seaside village that we like to say is a drinking village with a fishing problem.

2)   How long have you been writing?

I started writing my first novel in 1993 and found it difficult to write and work at the same time. I printed the novel off to edit and it still sits in its original form. I use it hold the laundry room door open in the breeze. I began my second, My GRL which has been published in March of 2012. So that was a roundabout answer which can be summarized as I have been writing full-time since 2012.

3)   What was the one idea which sparked off My GRL?

I was standing on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Lexington with my sister. Our father was a naval aviator during World War II and he served on the Lexington which is now moored at Corpus Christi. I was thinking about how vulnerable the boat really was with no way to protect it from anyone who wanted to destroy her. We left and I began to figure out how to blow her up and then how to prevent it. The story unfolded from there.

4)   Why did John Canon want to take an extra-long break from his Law firm?

John had worked about twelve years straight without a break. He went on a short vacation to Port Aransas Texas and decided he wanted to become a charter boat captain. He didn’t quit the firm he took a leave of absence. His motivation was to want more out of life than winning litigation cases and making a lot of money.

5)   How did Gerry become a boat broker?

Gerry was actually working at a bank in San Francisco and decided she needed to get away even thought she was a Vice President. Although it is never confirmed in the book, she was running away from a bad relationship. She visited her parents who were on vacation in Port Aransas to try and sort out her life. She more or less fell into the Yacht brokerage business by accident. Her dad was a friend with the owner and one night at dinner he met Gerry and thought she would make a great sales person. He was right and she did quite well

6)   Tell us about the Desert Wolves group.

The Desert Wolves are a small splinter group of terrorists who were once part of the Taliban. They broke away because the leadership felt the Taliban was concerned with its own ends and did not share the degree of militancy and hatred of the western world as the Desert Wolves. The group is funded by billionaire Matt Jacobs who wants to see Palestine returned to his people, as well as justice for perceived persecution by the west throughout the ages. This group is so militant the Taliban warned them to cease their activities or risk being sanctioned. The Desert Wolves have ignored all threats by their fellow Muslims including the church leadership.

7)   John’s plans for his last evening with My GRL are spoiled; tell us how John feels about that.

John initially is pretty upset since it was agreed he would have time to take Sarah Barsonne on the boat and have a last cocktail. When John and Sarah arrived dockside John’s boat was gone. The new owners had taken it early. John called the broker only to get little satisfaction and to realize there is nothing he can do about the early possession. He comes around to the point that it was a fine boat and he should be complimented the new owners were anxious to take her.

8)   When is it that John finally starts to believe he’s in real danger?

He is handcuffed and has leg irons attached and while he is trying to see some of the container ship he was on a soldier comes up to him and starts screaming at him while firing an AK47 into the air. John cannot understand what the soldier wants him to do and since he was authorized to move around the ship he is terrified and hits the deck. He knows now he is in real danger.

9)   I believe your own home is on Mustang Island, how would you entice me to come there on holiday?

I would tell you of the soft sand and warm Gulf of Mexico water. I would describe the wonderful restaurants and the friendly people. There are fine shops and fishing if you would like. I would also prepare a margarita for you and we could sit on my veranda and let the warm breeze and sound of the sea carry all worries away.

10)   Tell us where readers can find out more about you and your writing.

I have a blog titled Fiction Favorites at http://johnwhowell.com . Where I talk about general subjects and do post short stories as well. Readers can also visit my Author’s page on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/author/johnwhowell

My GRL

My GRL by John W. Howell

My GRLMy GRL by John W. Howell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When John Canon takes leave from his law firm, he heads to Mustang Island, Texas where he buys a boat and starts out to gain his Captain’s license. He now lives a relaxing lifestyle and is leaving a bar with friend Gerry Starnes when he finds himself waking up in hospital after a blow to the head.

An investigation is under way led by Chief of Police Ned Tranes, when John finds out how lucky he was. Gerry was murdered in the attack. John is the only witness and feels threatened by Ned’s questions. Having missed Gerry’s funeral John agrees to meet her parents who are still in town.

The situation hots up when the FBI pick up John and ask him to help them out. Spencer Stans has a persistent client who wants to buy John’s boat and the FBI want John to agree to the deal. Caught between the FBI and Chief Tranes John finds himself in considerable danger with very little chance of a way out.

There’s a slow relaxed feel to John Canon’s character throughout most of the book until he finally realises the extent of the danger he is in. But his intelligence keeps him afloat and his determination not to give up gets him to the end. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes. I felt there was room for a few more accents to be played out in the writing of the dialogue, but apart from that the book is a great read.

Teri chose to read “My GRL” by John W Howell

My GRL by John W Howell

My GRL by John W Howell

Here is Teri’s review

My GRL is the story of John J. Cannon, successful San Francisco lawyer, who takes a well-deserved leave of absence from his firm. He travels to a small Texas fishing town and buys a boat, unaware that his new purchase, renamed My GRL, had already been targeted by a terrorist group. John’s first inkling of a problem is when he wakes up in the hospital. He learns he was found unconscious next to the dead body of the attractive young woman who sold him the boat in the first place. John now stands between the terrorists and the success of their mission. – Goodreads.com

I’ve had this book in my TBR pile since it was released, so when I saw it was part of Rosie’s Review Challenge, I knew now was a perfect time to read it.

I wouldn’t say that I judge a book by its cover (literally), but covers are usually what first draw me to a book. This cover is very simple, with calming colors and has a serene feel to it – the opposite of the story inside, so don’t let that fool you.

When I first started this book, I wondered if this was an unfortunate case of a guy being in the wrong place at a horribly wrong time, but as the story unraveled, I learned there was definitely more to it. John Cannon was very easy to like, with his self-deprecating humor and clever survival skills. The supporting characters were all essential to the story, with no ‘fillers’ for window dressing. There was a twist near the end I didn’t see coming, always nice in any story.

In a couple of sections, I felt like too much detail was given on everyday, mundane tasks, so I skipped through those parts as they really didn’t contribute to the plot. I also noticed the wrong form of words used in a few places (repelling vs. rappelling and compliment vs. complement), something an editor should have picked up on.

This book was pretty well-paced, especially near the end, and I would recommend it to action/adventure and thriller fans. I’ll be interested to see where John Cannon’s next adventure takes him.

She chose to review “My GRL” by John W Howell.

My GRL by John W Howell

My GRL by John W Howell

Here is her review.

John Cannon is a character easy to root for. He’s the definition of cool, calm, and collected. In fact, it seems like he can handle just about anything that’s thrown his way: Gerry, the woman who sold him his boat is murdered in front of him, he’s a suspect in her death, he wakes up in the hospital with a head injury, he finds out that he’s involved with a terrorist group… okay that part causes him some anxiety…but he handles everything with humour.

For example, when John’s doctor asks him, “Do you think you should talk to the police without a lawyer?” His response is “I will represent myself until such time that I believe I have a fool for a client,” (11).

Besides having a great sense of humour, John is down to earth, honest, and a bit awkward. He’s interested in Sarah, a friend of Gerry’s who lives out of town. During dinner, John asks Sarah when she’s planning on leaving Port Aransas, Texas, and says that she’s planning on leaving Saturday. John replies, “That only gives us three days to get to know each other better.” With those words I slip and fall on a verbal banana,” (52).

“My GRL” has been on my to be read list for some time now. I’m so glad I finally had a chance to read it.

My GRL

“My GRL” by John W. Howell: A Review for Rosie’s Book Review Challenge

For me, there are books that beg to be dissected and there are books that beg the reader to strap in, sit back and enjoy the ride. “My GRL” by John W. Howell is one of those second books. The problems I had with the book were with my own pet peeves and do not reflect the author, story, or the writing itself, so they do not bare mentioning other than to say I would have found the same faults in almost any book that is written in the first person. I should mention I am also not a particular fan of mysteries to begin with. My pet peeves and personal preferences aside, I believe the author did a masterful job weaving his story. The story flowed easily and the characters were well rounded. I did not have to go back to reference certain parts to clarify, as is often the case when I read books. This is a credit to the author. If I were to give this book a star rating then I would pluck four of the biggest, brightest stars from the heavens. The author allowed me to overcome my pet peeves to thoroughly enjoy his story. If you enjoy mysteries and intrigue (even if you don’t) then I recommend you pick up “My GRL” by John Howell, strap yourself in and enjoy the ride. Who knows, if the author continues to pump out books of this quality I may yet become a fan of the genre. I will be anxiously waiting to see what is in store for John Cannon in the future.
