Beach Reads Blog Tour

I’d like to thank Rosie for inviting me on this tour. I imagine this is what it feels like to be chosen to go on Desert Island Discs and as it’s likely to be the closest I ever get to that I’m treating it the same and much like the choices there these have been hard to make – I didn’t think about that when I eagerly said yes! As an author Rosie has said that I can choose one of my own to promote but in an effort not to do an Elisabeth Schwartzkopf from the Roy Plomley era I shall not, though I will add that I do believe mine would make great beach reads and you can find out everything you need to know about them at Georgia Rose Books

Right onto the easy bit first, my ideal holiday destination. We stumbled upon the delights of Gozo a few years ago and have gone there ever since, not to the same villa or the same village mind, we’re not that predictable! Gozo is the tiny island off Malta, and with no airport of its own it’s reached by ferry, which starts the unwinding process. It’s the place I’d run to if, for some reason, I suddenly had to leave England…well you never know do you 😉 I’m not a great traveller but on Gozo I feel safe. The people are friendly, they actually like the British. They drive on the left and have the same telephone and post boxes as us, there are blue lanterns outside their police stations and being there puts me at ease.

So, onto my choices and I’ve had to go about making these in different ways as it has been so difficult. In the end I’ve chosen a book I’ve read before that I’d recommend, one from an author whose other work I have enjoyed, one I’ve had on my TBR list for ages but just haven’t got to from an author whose writing is new to me, an audio book chosen on recommendation and because of the narration and finally a book that from all I hear about it will be a good, fun read and is again from an author whose work I am yet to sample.

A book I would only read (listen to!) on holiday…Time Was: Time and Again Book 1 by Nora Roberts – Audio

Time Was Time and Again Book 1 Audio

I don’t get time to listen to audio books at home and I like the thought of having one to listen to whilst travelling or during those times on a sun bed when I’m completely relaxed and even holding up a kindle seems too arduous – I know #firstworldproblems…shaming. Anyway following reading a great post by Cathy on the Between The Lines Book Blog I’ve been inspired to try Time Was: Time and Again Book 1 by Nora Roberts.

This is from a genre I don’t usually read as it’s a time travel romance and in more ways than one as the book was originally published about 25 years ago.

The blurb reads – ‘Stranded in the present, time traveler Caleb Hornblower’s biggest problem isn’t returning to the twenty-third century – but falling head over heels for the beguiling Liberty Stone, who shows him a love more powerful than time itself. Though Caleb knows he belongs in the future, how can he leave the past, and Liberty, behind?’

What intrigues me most though, and the reason this is on my list, is that Cathy told me that listening to Luke Daniels (the narrator) is like listening to a play with a full cast and I’m looking forward to that.

A book from my favourite genre…Carla by Mark Barry – Kindle

18619851

This was the first book by Mark Barry I read and it is a great introduction to his work and it was whilst I was on holiday last year. It’s psychologically dark, a harrowing romance and I loved it – these are all words which sum up my favourite type of reading matter, along with thriller. It’s the sort of book that leaves you breathless at the end…staring at the wall and I didn’t read anything more that day, I couldn’t, I knew nothing else would come close. I have the paperback but this is fine to read on the kindle though a word to the wise if you are planning on getting Barry’s The Night Porter (and I would if I were you) try to get it in the paperback – there are footnotes you see, to add to the pleasure.

The blurb for Carla:-

John Dexter has problems. Real problems. We’re talking episodes in psychiatric hospitals, and then some. Woe betide any woman he falls in love with. But he’s no mad stalker. He knows himself, understand his own motives and behavioural patterns all too well. The problem is, he can’t stop himself. Then he meets Carla. Twenty-two years his junior, with family problems of her own. CARLA is a novel of obsession, love and loss, exploring very real mental health problems. It centres around an average flat and an average pub in an average English town, but its originality, realism and edgy humour has earned it a certain ‘cult’ status in some internet circles.’

I only have to read the first page of this book and I am drawn right back in there, it is ripe for rereading!

A book I’ve been meaning to read for ages…One Way Fare (Null City Book 1) by Barb Taub – Kindle

18489308

I have read the other two Null City books, Don’t Touch and Tales from Null City, and have wanted to tackle the first one for a while. These books are from a genre I wouldn’t usually choose, urban fantasy, but I’ve challenged myself to read many things since publishing and my eyes have been opened…as they say. Barb Taub is a terrifically engaging writer and her quick wit shines through in her stories so I’m sure I will be as absorbed by her first one as I have been by the others.

The blurb:-

A thrilling chase through time and space, Null City is only a Metro ride away, littered with slick rock stars, stoic warriors, and Nephilim – the descendants of angels. Superpowers suck. If you just want to live a normal life, Null City is only a Metro ride away. After one day there, imps become baristas, and hellhounds become poodles. Demons settle down, become parents, join the PTA, and worry about their taxes. Null City is the only sanctuary for Gaby Parker and Leila Rice, two young women confronting cataclysmic forces waging an unseen war between Heaven and Hell. Gaby and her younger brother and sister are already targets in the war that cost their parents’ lives. Should they forsake the powers that complete their souls and flee to Null City? Meanwhile, Leila has inherited a French chateau, a mysterious legacy, and a prophecy that she will end the world. Gaby and Leila become catalysts for the founding and survival of Null City. It just would have been nice if someone told them the angels were all on the other side.

A book that I believe I could truly escape with is…Diamonds and Dust by Carol Hedges – Paperback

18843459

Like so many others when I pack for a holiday my books go in first. In these days of having a kindle packing is easier but I always take my ‘just in case’ paperback. I’m fearful of something going wrong with the kindle or of me not being able to lie near enough to the plug socket it is currently being charged at so I need a back up.

Now I’ve only heard good things about this book, about the writing, about its authenticity and I do love a good murder. I’m also not very good at choosing books set in the past yet always enjoy them when I do so what’s not to love here?

The blurb:-

When a horrific murder takes place on a dark night in 1860’s London, it changes two women for ever. New light is cast upon past lives they thought they knew so well, and suddenly their futures become intertwined. The death of her uncle will leave eighteen-year-old Josephine King an orphan, an heiress and the owner of a priceless diamond, The Eye of the Khan. For Lilith Marks, a chance finally arises to end her life as a highly paid prostitute and to prove herself as a serious businesswoman. Set against the backdrop of the great gas-lit city, the two women are drawn together in their quest to discover just who killed the man they both loved. Diamonds & Dust is a page-whizzing narrative, with an intricate and absorbing plot that entices you through the teeming streets of Victorian London. If Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle all washed up on a desert island, they might have come up with something like this.

For my fun read, because from everything I’ve read it will be, I choose…Bootcamp Bride by Lizzie Lamb – Kindle

18779783

A few years ago I tried to read Emma by Jane Austen on a sun bed, what a mistake. I have learnt that holidays are not the time for trying to get into a book where the height of excitement involves a letter arriving in a village…at least not for me.

So as I’m not keen on fluffy romances or anything too lightweight I think this will hit the spot nicely – romance, suspense and danger, humorously told – what more could you want.

Take an up-for-anything reporter. Add a world-weary photo-journalist. Put them together . . . light the blue touch paper and stand well back! Posing as a bride-to-be, Charlee Montague goes undercover at a boot camp for brides in order to photograph supermodel Anastasia Markova. At Charlee’s side and posing as her fiancé, is Rafael Ffinch award winning photographer and survivor of a kidnap attempt in Columbia. He’s in no mood to cut inexperienced Charlee any slack and has made it plain that once the investigation is over, their partnership – and fake engagement – will be terminated, too. Soon Charlee has more questions than answers. What’s the real reason behind Ffinch’s interest in the boot camp? How is it connected to his kidnap in Columbia? In setting out to uncover the truth, Charlee puts herself in danger … As the investigation draws to a close, she wonders if she’ll be able to hand back the engagement ring and walk away from Rafa without a backward glance.

Rosie Amber’s Beach Reads – June 2015

Hi Rosie,

Thanks so much for inviting me along …it’s been great fun and a real treat to indulge my favourite pastime, as in common with most authors, I’m always a reader first!

Because I work full time running a boutique PR company I use my holidays to write. So I write everywhere! I write at the airport – love it if we’re delayed – on the plane – the longer the flight the better – by the pool, at the beach, in a restaurant, on a yacht – you name it, I’ll be there scribbling away. I write my novels longhand and then do my first edit when I type up my notes. I’m an early bird, so by late morning I am usually ready to go off with everyone else and have fun – works for me!

A Fact Book/Guide Book – about the place I am taking my holiday in.

12958655

Paris in Love by Eloisa James is my book of choice, and that fabulous city my destination. I was interviewing Eloisa – New York Times bestselling author of Regency Romance – for Romance Matters, the Romantic Novelists’ Association magazine, and decided to read some of her books. I loved Potent Pleasures – which was her debut novel, and then fell head over heels for her delicious memoir of a year spent in Paris. The book is quirky, poetic, poignant and funny – with notes on fashion, shopping and food, in-filled with many lovely family snippets, including how Eloisa’s son and daughter are fitting in with the locals, with varying degrees of success.

I had my own love affair with Paris some time ago, this gorgeous read reignited my passion, beautifully.

A book from my favourite genre …

23635177

This would be my novel Secrets of the Heart, the final book in the Heartfelt Trilogy which set me on the road to finally realising my dream of becoming a published novelist. The genre is romantic suspense, which I love. I know the story, of course, but I still become gripped reading scenes from books I’ve already read, and I adore it when I notice something new, and believe me, that happens with your own books too.

While writing, I was so worried about one set of characters, I clean forgot to work out how my main hero and heroine were going to get together. But the mind is a weird and wonderful thing, I woke up one morning desperate to finish the book that week and the last chapter more or less wrote itself, I just had to do a bit of infill tying up some lose ends in between. It was as if my heroine was saying, at last, come on, get on with it and if you’ve met her, you’ll know precisely what I mean.

A book I could truly escape with …

25365667

This would have to be Poldark by Winston Graham. I remember not watching the original TV series, because our television aerial wasn’t good enough to receive a decent picture. I was brought up in Dublin and in the early days we needed staggeringly tall aerials to pick up the signal coming across from Wales and of course, there were a few mountains in the way too! My folks had to save up for our aerial and when it came it was a sixteen footer, easily the biggest in the area. It arrived just in time to fall in love with Marc Bolan on Top of the Pops, phew!

Aidan Turner, the actor currently playing Poldark is from Clondakin in Dublin, literally up the road from my folks. I love the fact the role will put this very talented, ‘neighbour’s child’ on the road to global fame and feel justice has been served! I wonder if his folks’ aerial wasn’t tall enough to see the first series either?

A book I would only read on holiday in a sun, sea and sand location.

17238

Dracula by Bram Stoker. I could only bear it somewhere where I could imagine a vampire would not appear, but I would love to read to it. A timeless gothic classic that has fascinated writers, film makers and artists since it was first published in 1897, the original story must be enthralling.

Bram was a Dubliner and a friend of Oscar Wilde’s and although he spent ten years in the civil service, he began an unpaid secondary career with the (Dublin) Evening Mail writing theatrical reviews. I was thrilled to discover this, as I wrote unpaid reviews for the Irish Times as a young trainee journalist in Dublin too – I also have a secret pash for Wilde, his picture hangs in our downstairs loo.

Although well received, Dracula was not an immediate hit – take heart fellow authors – and Bram published 19 novels before the end of his life. He also successfully managed to Lyceum Theatre in London for nearly 30 years – what a super chap!

And last but not least from me, something in my favourite genre, something to truly escape with and something to read anywhere, anytime, applies to all three of these super novels by my colleagues at New Romantics Press, all of which are available on Kindle and in paperback.

Letter C The April A to Z Blogging Challenge #AtoZChallenge

Day 3 of the April A to Z blogging challenge and my theme is book characters, plus some audience participation.

Letter C is for Charlee Montague in Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb

18779783

Lizzie Lamb’s characters are so lovable, Charlee became my buddy from the very first line. She was fiery unpredictable and quite honestly a delightful handful. Charlee Montague is an intern at “What’Cha” Magazine, the lowest of the low and given the worst jobs. But she has a passion to make it big and her feisty attitude nearly gets her in to BIG trouble at the book awards when she gives her honest opinion about photographs by high profile author Rafael Fonseca-Ffinch.

Next day instead of being fired she’s given the chance to redeem herself with a story about a young Royal playing away from home. But she has a partner and she must face Ffinch. Her best friend Poppy fills her in on Ffinch; kidnapped in Columbia by the Aguilas Negra, he was left to die, until he was rescued by an Amazon tribe. Now he’s putting all the proceeds of the book in to a hospital boat and Charlee must eat humble pie.

The short story piece is only the tip of the iceberg and Charlee finds herself going the extra mile to get her scoop. Faking an engagement and booking herself in to a Boot Camp for Brides, Charlee’s fulfilling the role, but what is it that Ffinch isn’t telling her? Frustrated Charlee threatens to find the truth herself and just how long will it take for her to also see what else is standing right before her eyes?

A book title and cover picture can often make or break a book sale. Is a book cover eye-catching? Does the book title appeal to the reader?

Have fun creating book titles from my own pictures, you might even think about a genre they could fit.

Charlene (Charlee) Montague’s dream after graduation had been to report breaking news from a war zone.  She has high ambitions to live up to the successful careers her parents and brothers have achieved.  Instead, she has to make do with her newbie reporter job at What’cha! doing grunt work for her unyielding boss, Vanessa Lloyd.  But, Charlee is book-smart knowing seven languages; she’s determined; and she’s downright hard-headed.  Her best friend and the boss’s daughter, Poppy, pulls her unwillingly to attend What’cha!’s prestigious book award ceremony.  There she meets author, Rafael Fonseca-Ffinch.  She doesn’t recognize him and becomes exceedingly rude.  He knows the owner of What’cha!, Sam Walker.  But instead of Sam firing her for her behavior, Mr. Fonseca-Ffinch had requested that Charlee be assigned to his current research project going under cover to spy on supermodel, Anastasia Markova.  Charlee knows there’s more – much more – to this story and to Mr. Fonseca-Ffinch than meets the eye.

Charlee was a fun character to watch and the story line was amusing.  It did make me a bit sad for her that her whole family, being high achievers, seemed to close her out and make her feel small.  They had gotten used to not expecting much from Charlee.  I’m not sure which is worse – to have your family feel as though you’re as good as you’re going to get, or to begin to feel that they may be right.  This was a light, easy read.  The bantering between Charlee and Ffinch was witty and made up much of the story.  They play act their engagement so she can attend bride boot camp with Anastasia in Thornham in the English county of Norfolk.  This is a chick-lit and as is the case with most of that genre, you can predict the romance.  However, it is much more difficult to guess the mystery and danger that faces Charlee and cheer on Ffinch as he tries to protect her.  I rated Boot Camp Bride at 3.5 out of 5.

Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb

Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb

Where is your home town?

Leicester in the United Kingdom

How long have you been writing romance?

I’ve been writing romance ever since I can remember. I first started submitting manuscripts to publishers in the late 80’s – starting, as we all did, with Mills and Boone and then progressing onto Little Black Dress. I landed an agent in 1990 (Dot Lumley) but due to pressure of work (I was a primary school deputy head teacher at the time) I had to temporarily abandon my fledgling writing career and concentrate on the day job. After taking early retirement from teaching in 2008 I was able to return to my first love, writing.

What is your favourite sub-genre of romance?

I would have to say romantic comedy. When I was working, I was too tired at night to read War and Peace and Dostoevsky for pleasure. I wanted something light, witty and entertaining and rom coms fitted the bill. If I was to branch out further I’d head for romantic suspense but with lots of action and humour, not pages of description or the characters’ inner thoughts.

Where does Charlee work?

Charlee works for a scurrilous, gossip-mongering magazine called What’cha. To sell copies of the magazine the editor demands that his staff get the skinny on celebrities and TV and sports personalities by whatever means possible. The more outrageous the story, the better, in his opinion. Charlee sees her internship at What’cha as the stepping stone to becoming an investigative journalist.

How does she meet Rafael?

Charlee is given an invitation to an exclusive Book Award Evening being organised by What’ch because of her friendship with Poppy Walker, the proprietor/owner of What’cha’s daughter. When she gets to the venue she discovers that she, and other interns from What’cha have been invited there under false pretences i.e. they are to act as waiters. At the end of the long shift, the glass of champagne she has hidden away for herself is purloined by the hero and she has to fight for it, verbally. In doing so she insults the hero without realising he is the winner of the prestigious Book Award.

Is it love at first sight for them?

Of course. But neither of them knows it at the time. He thinks she’s a bit of an irresponsible madcap and she thinks he’s an arrogant ‘posh boy’ who’s good for nothing but swanning around award ceremonies. As my old mate Dostoevsky put it: “We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word is spoken.’ That.

What is the photo shoot assignment?

To test her mettle, Charlee is sent undercover to get photos of a young royal ‘playing away from home.’ If she passes the test she becomes Rafael’s (very) temporary partner and will be sent on a more important assignment to get photographs of a Russian Supermodel looking dishevelled and less than perfect at a Boot camp for Brides. Unknown to Charlee, she’s being sent into the boot camp as a Trojan horse in order to give Rafael’s access to the camp to investigate the drug smuggling activities of the model’s Russian boyfriend.

Where is the Boot Camp for Brides?

The Boot camp is set on the Norfolk Marshes in a real village called Thornham. Some of the action also takes place in What’cha’s offices in Canary Wharf and Rafael’s mews cottage in Chelsea.

Tell us what you are working on at the moment.

For Book Three I’m returning to Scotland. In this novel I tell the story of Ishabel Stuart who is at a crossroads in her life. Her father has just died, her fiancé has been unfaithful to her and she questions whether her job as a designer is what she really wants from life. She returns home to Eilean na Sgairbh on the west coast of Scotland to realise her dream of establishing a small artistic community there. Unfortunately, when she arrives at her family home (which is run as a bed and breakfast by her Aunt Esme) she finds Brodie – an All American Boy, staying there. She simply wants peace and quiet but everything about gorgeous, sexy Brodie unsettles her. Inevitably, she finds herself attracted to him and starts to rely on him for help and support during a difficult time in her life. However, she soon suspects him of having a hidden agenda and not being totally open about his reasons for staying on remote, beautiful Cormorant Island . . .

She chose to review “Boot Camp Bride” by Lizzie Lamb

Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb

Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb

Here is Kerry’s review;

Bootcamp Bride is a real must-have for the beach this summer.

Charlee Montague, a feisty rookie reporter, desperate for her big break, is paired with experienced, and not unattractive, photographer Rafa Fonsecca-Ffinch for an assignment she cannot refuse.

Posing as an engaged couple, Charlee is sent to a bridal bootcamp in the Norfolk marshes to get the gossip on model Anastasia Markova and her husband-to-be, while Rafa gets some juicy snapshots.

Rafa makes it quite clear from the start that the engagement is purely for show and as soon as the assignment is over, so is the “engagement”.

Charlee has more intelligence that she is given credit for and realises early on that there is more to this story than a few photos and candid quotes from Anastasia. She is smart enough to figure out that there is something Finch isn’t telling her. Something about his past that he hasn’t quite been able to put to rest and she is determined for find out exactly what it is, even if it means putting herself in danger.

This novel pulls you in right from the start and the mystery and intrigue keeps you hooked and guessing right to the end. With characters you can believe in and a fast paced storyline, I

promise you, once you pick up Bootcamp Bride you will not want to put it down.

THE PERFECT WEEKEND READ!

Boot Camp Bride is the perfect weekend read, it’s a light hearted, feel good page turner and once I’d started it I couldn’t put it down. The story sees Charlee Montague, an ambitious, feisty young reporter paired with award winning photographer Rafael Ffinch in order to pose as an engaged couple at a boot camp for brides to be. As far as Charlee is concerned the mission is about gaining an expose on a supermodel and her Russian oligarch boyfriend but it soon becomes clear that there is more to the assignment than she knows.

In Boot Camp Bride, Lizzie Lamb has created a wonderful protagonist in Charlee. She is every bit the gutsy, contemporary heroine and I loved her immediately. Charlee is a fiercely ambitious over achiever and we are given an insight into why when Lamb introduces her difficult, hard to please mother. Charlee’s enthusiasm is the perfect foil for the jaded, been around the block Rafael. More used to working in gritty environments and, having just survived a kidnap attempt in Columbia, Rafael is not impressed by Charlee’s perky approach. And this conflict is where the true delight of the novel lies as the two of them engage in deliciously witty repartee. Lizzie Lamb’s skill as a writer shines through in her clever and often hilarious use of dialogue.

The novel succeeds on many levels; it is a light hearted romp, interlaced with mystery and danger to keep the reader guessing. At the same time both the central characters and background characters are believable and likeable. If you’re looking for a bit of escapism from real life then this book delivers in spades.

I read about a new challenge to make the world a better place to live in. “Speak Kind Words, Receive Kind Echoes” see the inspiration on  The Kindness blog . During my learning process I’m donating money to charity for my slip-ups to make me work harder to achieve results. I earn no money from any of my book reviews, so having little to spare should focus my mind.

This week I’ve been doing the following;

June 29th – Just sorting out the book and readers for the challenge as we head to the last day of posts. Trying to get at least one reader for every book.

June 30th – My morning helping at school, and a final push for the book review challenge. Posting out lists of readers to authors.

July 1st – So just when you thought you could pause for breath, I thought I’d launch a Book Review Team to help authors reach a wider audience. A relaxed team, free of charge to join with the importance being writing and posting those reviews. For more details click on the rose widget on my sidebar. Just sorting out finer details now but we already have lots of interest from both authors and readers.

Online issues of Fleet Life and Elvetham Heath Directory went out today.

Here are the featured books;

Business As Usual by E. L. Lindley

Kings and Queens by Terry Tyler

Derek’s In Trouble by Mac Black

Secrets of The Unaltered by Leti Del Mar

and  The Hollow Heart by Adrienne Vaughan

The Singing Bowl by Roy Dimond

Johnny Nothing by Ian Probert

Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb

The Manila Strangler by Steven Donahue

and An Englishwoman’s Guide to the Cowboy by June Kearns

July 2nd – Book reviews are coming in from readers who took up my book review challenge already, there are some speedy readers out there. I’m posting them on my blog as they come in. Went over to my Mum’s and fed her 3 week old chicks at lunchtime as they were out. Was chief navigator and tour guide to friends as we went out to a countryside pub for a meal. Put an extra tip in the restaurant bill to cover any trip ups in my Kindness challenge.

July 3rd – Dashed to the supermarket to do the weekly shop, picked up litter in the car park and bought some cereal to go in their Charity Food Bank collection. Just about to launch the first Rosie’s Book Review Team booklist.

A long evening walk and more litter picking.

July 4th – The first book review from my new Book Review Team has come in already, I will be posting Dani’s Review today as you are reading this (Sunday). Back to Friday, went out for a walk to check out a closed footpath and picked up litter along the way.

July 5th – Added another book to the Book Review Teams’ list. Any one who would like to join can check out the link http://wp.me/P2Eu3u-5qu. I’m in a whirl wind of admin collating books, book reviews, guest author pieces, adding books to the Book Review Team list and reviewers to another. I’m sending book review requests to authors and drafting up lots of book review posts. It all seems really popular to thank you everyone for all your support.

Sent out details of children’s books I’ve read to a student who is looking to do a project on children’s books over the summer.
