Mystery Book Tour Day 18 #MysteryNovember Jamie’s Gamble by Gregg Bell

November Mystery Tour

Today our guest on the mystery book tour is Gregg Bell with his book Jamie’s Gamble

jamies-gamble_full_1600x2400_high

Where is your home town?

Itasca, Village of Iris, Illinois (6000 people, 6 miles west of Chicago)

How long have you been writing?

Thirty years.

What is your favourite sub-genre of mystery?

Psychological

Where is your book set?

Jamie’s Gamble starts in an affluent suburb of Chicago, but the majority of the story takes place in a turbulent, dangerous, violent Texas border town called Langston.

Why does Jamie feel the need to escape?

Jamie needs to escape because she’s done all she could to satisfy her incredibly demanding, perfectionist father and it’s still not good enough. She needs to strike out for an independent life or she will suffocate under her father’s control.

What are the good and the bad things that Jamie discovers in her new home?

Jamie discovers that there is a very different world out there than the world of privilege she’s just left. People are no longer of the country club, gentile set she’s been accustomed to. Some are jealous of her. Some lust for her. Some want to hurt her. But the flip-side is her new home is real and it’s hers – and she finds love there.

Introduce us to Ricky Benson.

Ricky Benson is a twenty-something who has stood at the pinnacle as a flame-throwing baseball pitcher headed for major league stardom, and yet a tragic boating accident has crushed his hopes for a career in baseball, and the dodgy circumstances of the accident (some witnesses say he was drunk and fell into the boat’s propeller) had the townspeople of Langston gossiping about him. Ricky subsequently has lived the party life: getting drunk, chasing the wrong kind of women, basically pursuing a slow suicide, his mind befuddled to help ease the pain and shame that his life has become. This all, until he meets Jamie. When his hopes for a better life, albeit better in a way different than baseball stardom, are rekindled.

What is the mystery element in the book?

The mystery element is that prostitutes are being systematically murdered in and around Langston, Texas, and law enforcement is doing nothing to stop it ( and many townspeople believe that the local sheriff is tacitly encouraging the murders, seeing prostitutes’ deaths as “good riddance”) The mystery element comes closer to Jamie when a fellow waitress is mistaken for a prostitute and killed – and Jamie thinks she might be next. Also, later, Ricky is unjustly accused of murder.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am working on a novel about a nanny who abducts a billionaire’s’ baby son

Mystery Book Tour Day 2 #MysteryNovember Spirit Warriors: The Scarring by D.E.L.Connor

November Mystery Tour

Please welcome to the mystery book tour, Della Connor and her book Spirit Warriors: The Scarring

22733228

Where is your home town?

I live in a small town in Texas about 90 miles north of Houston. We jokingly say that we live “behind the pine curtain.” This area is home to immensely tall pine trees that seem to isolate us from the big cities, which are just a short distance from us.

This is book 2 in your series when did you start writing them?

I had the idea for the series about twenty years ago but I didn’t start writing them until 2012. I am a late bloomer or as I like to say I never grew up I just grew old.

What is your favourite sub-genre of mystery?

I would have to say historical mysteries. I love history, old places and buildings, and people who have been gone a long time.

Where is your book set?

In the state of Montana in the present time. If you have never been there you must add it to your bucket list. Words can’t properly describe the beauty of Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park.

Introduce us to the main characters in the book.

Emmeline Rima Belrose: Emme is the storyteller of the books. She is strong-willed, brave, and fierce. Her spirit animal is the majestic soaring osprey, Eros.

Charlie Hunt: Charlie is a seer and a gifted medicine man. Charlie is the leader of the group. He has the visions and the powers that guide the others. He is Emme’s protector, as he alone knows how valuable she, and her gifts, are to his people and to the future of their tribe. His spirit animal is the fierce grizzly, Hercules.

Lilly Grayson: Lilly is soft, petite, and kind. She is loved for her kindness and grace. She loves cheerleading and barrel racing with her spirit animal the beautiful mustang Arion.

Betsy Ross: (Bets) Bets is the beauty of the group with reddish blond hair and green eyes. She is the questioner of the group, always wanting to know why, and then wanting to make things better. Her spirit animal is the graceful mountain lion, Electra.

Lachlan Jackson Arrington: (Jack) Jack moved back to the family ranch in Montana when he was in high school. He came from Australia after his father was killed in a car accident. He is not a part of the spirit warriors, but he knows about them and he helps them. Jack is the listener and solver of the group. He is the one the others turn to when they need to talk about something. He is also the one to come up with solutions when things get tough.

Oliver Graves: (Ollie) Ollie provides all the fun of the group. He always has a joke or a smile to share. Ollie’s spirit animal is the fast coyote, Zephyr. Read more about them here: http://dellaconnor.com/character-bios/

What is the element of mystery in the book?

The kids must find and destroy an evil spirit, the machayiwiw, before he kills Emme. The only problem is they don’t know where or in what body they will find him.

What unusual skills do the children have?

Emme, Bets, Charlie, Lilly, and Ollie all have the ability to move their spirits into an animal host.

Tell us a bit about Em’s new power.

Emme has discovered that in addition to her ability to move her spirit to her osprey Eros, she can communicate with animals.

What was the best bit about researching this book?

Reading all of the Native American stories. They have stories to explain everything from the stars in the skies to the water in the rivers. I have started adding the stories to my blog. Read about the origin of summer and winter here: http://dellaconnor.com/native-american-stories/

Romancing September #RomancingSeptember – Day 13

Romance September 2014 cover (1)

Welcome to Day 13 of Romancing September Across The World Tour. Today our guest is Della Connor. Catch up with more from Della in a few hours with the second part of our tour when Stephanie chats to her.

Spirit-Warriors-high-res2

1)Where is your home town?

A small town in East Texas about 90 miles north of Houston. We call this part of Texas the “Piney-woods”. Right now it is hot and humid, a typical summer in Texas.

2)How long have you been writing romance?

I am a new author so I would have to say a short time! I have read romance novels since I was a teenager and my Grandmother would gift me her paperback Harlequins.

3)What is your favourite sub-genre of romance?

I guess since I write young adult, I would have to say young adult or new adult. I like the innocence and forever-ness of first love.

4)Tell are where your book is set.

It is set in present day Montana. I grew up in Montana and the pure beauty and majesty of that state gives you something to write about!

5)Who has been teaching the children about the Native Americans?

In my first book of the series, The Concealing, Archie who is the Native American grandfather of one of the five main characters tells the stories to the characters as they are growing up. He spends a lot of time with the kids and teaches them many things including how to build a tepee and how to do Native American dances. He also teaches them how to fight.

6)What games do the children like to play?

The characters have one game in particular that they play all the time. It is actually a re-enactment of Custer’s Last Stand or The Battle of Little Bighorn. Each of them has an assigned character that they play and of course we all know how the game ends.

7)Who is the dangerous spirit?

The machaywiw is an ancient Native American Medicine Man gone bad, so to speak. He is extremely powerful and has used his supernatural powers to exact revenge on a tribe who denied him the powers of their chief’s daughter.

8) Why does Charlie need to protect Emme?

He is Emme’s protector as he alone knows how valuable she, and her gifts, are to his people and to the future of their tribe. Charlie wants nothing more than to be with Emme for the rest of his life. But first he has to make sure that Emme lives to have the rest of her life – See more about the characters at: http://dellaconnor.com/character-bios/#sthash.mvqf3O1Q.dpuf

9)Tell us what you are working on at the moment.

I am 50,000 words into Book 3 in the series called The Burning. Here’s a teaser: “I don’t know. We didn’t get that far. I suspect she is here now because the time is drawing near to battle the machayiwiw.” I put my head in my hands. “Jack, in all likelihood I will die and possibly the others as well. Don’t you see why it just isn’t fair for me to lead you on? Do you want to spend your life like Golden Flower pining away for the love you lost? Can you imagine how hard it is to be left behind when everything you loved has left? I won’t do that to you. I can’t do that to you.” I stared at my boots. “Emme, I would gladly live what is left of my life alone to have you be mine in everyway possible for even a day or even just an hour. It would be the best hour of my life and the memory of our love could get me through the rest of my life. The thought of you waiting for me, would carry me through all the seasons of my life, until forever.” My eyes filled with tears and my voice cracked. “Oh… Jack.

Romancing September #RomancingSeptember – Day 10

rosie1

Welcome to Day 10 of Romancing September Across The World Tour. Today our guest is June Kearns. Catch up with more from June in a few hours with the second part of our tour when Stephanie chats to her.

The 20'sGirl,The Ghost and All That Jazz - June Kearns

The 20’sGirl,The Ghost and All That Jazz – June Kearns

Where is your home town?

I grew up in Buckinghamshire, but now live in Leicester in the UK.

How long have you been writing romance?

Since winning a national magazine competition in the 70s, for the first chapter of a romantic novel. My interest in reading it, started at 13 when I came across Jane Eyre, and realised that heroines didn’t have to be beautiful!

What is your favourite sub-genre of romance?

I haven’t got a special favourite. Sometimes, I’m attracted by a period or event, but it’s usually the characters, sparky dialogue and story-telling that hook me in.

When and where is your book set?

The 20s Girl is set partly in the English Shires, and partly in south-west Texas.

What did Gerry’s aunt leave her?

To her absolute astonishment, Gerry’s flapper of an aunt, Leonie, left her a half-share in a cattle ranch in south-west Texas.

How long would it take to get to Texas from England in the 1920s?

Hard to say, exactly – certainly weeks and weeks, depending on weather conditions and time of year. Gerry crossed from Liverpool to New York on a Cunarder, with the Atlantic in a very bad mood. Then, hundreds of miles with different railroad companies to get to south-west Texas.

Was Gerry welcomed with open arms to the ranch?

Not exactly! In the Texan’s own words: “The last thing on God’s earth that I need now, is some English lady bountiful, looking for excitement in her boring, small-town life, coming to meet the natives.”

Why was there a lack of eligible men in England in the 1920s?

It was a sad combination of the Great War, where a generation of young men was so cruelly wiped out, and the septic flu epidemic.

When I started writing, I read “Singled Out” by Virginia Nicholson about the sad plight of all those women in England at the time, with almost no hope of finding a husband.

Tell us what you are working on at the moment.

Book Three is set in 1960s London – a sort of hist/fic/romcom! – involving a girl struggling keep her crumbling family home together, while being pursued by a Canadian photographer looking for rolls of film taken by the girl’s mother, during D-Day landings.

The 20’sGirl,The Ghost and All That Jazz – June Kearns

Here is Alison’s review.

The 20s Girl, the Ghost and All That Jazz – June Kearns

I loved this book! June Kearns has created a romantic page turner devoid of soppiness but full of heart, laughter and wonderful characters that draw you in to their well-drawn world.

Gerardina Chiledexter is struggling to fund the run-down bookshop that is all she has been left by her extravagant, glamorous aunt (except for a mountain of debts). Just when it seems she has nowhere left to turn, she receives a surprise inheritance – half a cattle ranch in Texas.

We are swept away with Gerry to the wildness and heat of Texas, where she is made less than welcome by co-owner Coop. Confused by her conflicting feelings towards him, Gerry makes some rash decisions that lead her further into debt and seem to pave the way to a life of lonely spinsterhood.

However, there are twists and turns and surprises galore, along with a helping hand from some friendly spirits hoping to guide Gerry towards a brighter future.

The author does a fantastic job of bringing two very different places to life – the contrast between the dry heat of the vast plains of Texas was contrasted beautifully with the cold wet winters of England. I could feel Gerry suffocating as she listened to the rain dripping on to the windows of Prim’s tiny cottage.

The context of the novel was really interesting. The lack of eligible men to marry after the end of WWI was a real problem for women who had few other opportunities in life. Gerry, although a bright, funny and lovely girl, is not immune to this pressure, or to the fear of spinsterhood. I hate it when writers give us feisty female heroines from history who live independent, happy lives immune to social pressures. It’s refreshing to have a realistic heroine who is more than aware of the social constraints that have a very real bearing on what she is and isn’t allowed to do. And the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter offered a real insight into the pressures put on women at the time.

I thoroughly recommend this novel and will definitely be reading more of June Kearns’ work.

Five out of five stars.

Guest Author John W Howell

Today our guest is John Howell author of yesterday’s book My GRL. Here is a link to the post if you missed it. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5pr

Let’s find out more about John and his book.

1)   Where is your home town?

I was born in Detroit Michigan in the US. I consider it my hometown even though I have not lived there for over fifty years. I have move around while being part of the business community. I now live in a seaside village that we like to say is a drinking village with a fishing problem.

2)   How long have you been writing?

I started writing my first novel in 1993 and found it difficult to write and work at the same time. I printed the novel off to edit and it still sits in its original form. I use it hold the laundry room door open in the breeze. I began my second, My GRL which has been published in March of 2012. So that was a roundabout answer which can be summarized as I have been writing full-time since 2012.

3)   What was the one idea which sparked off My GRL?

I was standing on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Lexington with my sister. Our father was a naval aviator during World War II and he served on the Lexington which is now moored at Corpus Christi. I was thinking about how vulnerable the boat really was with no way to protect it from anyone who wanted to destroy her. We left and I began to figure out how to blow her up and then how to prevent it. The story unfolded from there.

4)   Why did John Canon want to take an extra-long break from his Law firm?

John had worked about twelve years straight without a break. He went on a short vacation to Port Aransas Texas and decided he wanted to become a charter boat captain. He didn’t quit the firm he took a leave of absence. His motivation was to want more out of life than winning litigation cases and making a lot of money.

5)   How did Gerry become a boat broker?

Gerry was actually working at a bank in San Francisco and decided she needed to get away even thought she was a Vice President. Although it is never confirmed in the book, she was running away from a bad relationship. She visited her parents who were on vacation in Port Aransas to try and sort out her life. She more or less fell into the Yacht brokerage business by accident. Her dad was a friend with the owner and one night at dinner he met Gerry and thought she would make a great sales person. He was right and she did quite well

6)   Tell us about the Desert Wolves group.

The Desert Wolves are a small splinter group of terrorists who were once part of the Taliban. They broke away because the leadership felt the Taliban was concerned with its own ends and did not share the degree of militancy and hatred of the western world as the Desert Wolves. The group is funded by billionaire Matt Jacobs who wants to see Palestine returned to his people, as well as justice for perceived persecution by the west throughout the ages. This group is so militant the Taliban warned them to cease their activities or risk being sanctioned. The Desert Wolves have ignored all threats by their fellow Muslims including the church leadership.

7)   John’s plans for his last evening with My GRL are spoiled; tell us how John feels about that.

John initially is pretty upset since it was agreed he would have time to take Sarah Barsonne on the boat and have a last cocktail. When John and Sarah arrived dockside John’s boat was gone. The new owners had taken it early. John called the broker only to get little satisfaction and to realize there is nothing he can do about the early possession. He comes around to the point that it was a fine boat and he should be complimented the new owners were anxious to take her.

8)   When is it that John finally starts to believe he’s in real danger?

He is handcuffed and has leg irons attached and while he is trying to see some of the container ship he was on a soldier comes up to him and starts screaming at him while firing an AK47 into the air. John cannot understand what the soldier wants him to do and since he was authorized to move around the ship he is terrified and hits the deck. He knows now he is in real danger.

9)   I believe your own home is on Mustang Island, how would you entice me to come there on holiday?

I would tell you of the soft sand and warm Gulf of Mexico water. I would describe the wonderful restaurants and the friendly people. There are fine shops and fishing if you would like. I would also prepare a margarita for you and we could sit on my veranda and let the warm breeze and sound of the sea carry all worries away.

10)   Tell us where readers can find out more about you and your writing.

My GRL

My GRL by John W. Howell

My GRLMy GRL by John W. Howell

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

When John Canon takes leave from his law firm, he heads to Mustang Island, Texas where he buys a boat and starts out to gain his Captain’s license. He now lives a relaxing lifestyle and is leaving a bar with friend Gerry Starnes when he finds himself waking up in hospital after a blow to the head.

An investigation is under way led by Chief of Police Ned Tranes, when John finds out how lucky he was. Gerry was murdered in the attack. John is the only witness and feels threatened by Ned’s questions. Having missed Gerry’s funeral John agrees to meet her parents who are still in town.

The situation hots up when the FBI pick up John and ask him to help them out. Spencer Stans has a persistent client who wants to buy John’s boat and the FBI want John to agree to the deal. Caught between the FBI and Chief Tranes John finds himself in considerable danger with very little chance of a way out.

There’s a slow relaxed feel to John Canon’s character throughout most of the book until he finally realises the extent of the danger he is in. But his intelligence keeps him afloat and his determination not to give up gets him to the end. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader on their toes. I felt there was room for a few more accents to be played out in the writing of the dialogue, but apart from that the book is a great read.

The 20’s Girl, The Ghost and All That Jazz by June Kearns

The 20's Girl, the ghost, and all that jazzThe 20’s Girl, the ghost, and all that jazz by June Kearns

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was delightful, I read it in less than 24 hours. Set in 1924 the book covers two extremely different settings. Firstly the English Shires, lush, green, damp and a place short of men after the War and the Flu epidemic. Secondly Texas, vast, hot and dry, full of rough men and cattle.

Gerardina Chiledexter has been left a bookshop and a heap of debts by her flamboyant aunt. When a complete stranger announces that she has been left half a Texas ranch by a man she’s never heard of, a chance to pay off all her debts looks hopeful. But Aunt Leonie left a letter asking Gerry to visit Texas before she sells her half.

On a whim, Gerry travels thousands of miles to Jericho Wells and the Circle O Ranch. But Coop and everyone there make her feel very unwelcome. She struggles to fit in and when Doc Hyde reveals that Coop can’t pay up, Gerry hot tails it back to England.

With no nest egg and the bookshop falling down around them, it looks like Archie’s offer of marriage is the only way out, unless the ghosts that surround Gerry finally get their way. looking forward to reading more by this author.

Today I’d like you to join in and welcome Della Connor to the blog, author of Spirit Warriors, yesterday’s book review. If you missed the post here is the link. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-4po

Let’s Find out more about Della.

1) Where is your home town?

My hometown is Lufkin, Texas about 100 miles north of Houston, Texas. It is a small town surrounded by towering pine trees. Hotter than Hades in the summer, wonderful in the winter!

2) How long have you been writing?

I have been writing something all my life. I have stories that run constantly through my mind. I just don’t have the time I need to write them all down. I finally stopped writing on bits of paper and actually wrote them down on the computer. That action started the Spirit Warriors Series.

3) What was the best bit about growing up on a farm in Montana?

Well at the time I thought nothing was good about it. I was a typical teenager, ready to get the hell out of there and live in a big city. Now looking back at it, I miss the summers. I miss the smell of warm alfalfa grass and wildflowers, the cool breezes, the turquoise blue of the Montana skies. I miss riding horseback on my pony Silver and lying on my back watching the clouds in the sky. I learned the value of hard work and the love for land and animals in the beauty of Montana.

4) What was the worst bit?

The winters! They last forever. The sun is gone by 4:00 in the afternoon. It seems to be dark more of the day than it is light. Recently, my parents had a temperature of -30 degrees at the ranch. I don’t miss Montana then.

5) Tell us about the Native Americans who lived in Montana.

The Native Americans in Montana are of varied tribes. In the part of Montana that I was raised, they include the Northern Cheyenne, the Sioux, the Crow, and the Flatheads. Each tribe is distinct with their cultural practices. The tribe in my book is not a particular Native American tribe but rather a fictional tribe based on several tribes practices and beliefs.

6) Can you tell the readers who or what the Machayiwiw was?

He is an evil spirit who has been around for centuries. He was once a powerful medicine man and took the path of power and hatred. He has a huge score to settle with this tribe and he will not stop until it is completed.

7) I’m from the UK can you explain the type of Rodeo racing that Lilly took part in.

She was a barrel racer. It is a competition for women, based on the speed of the horse and rider completing an obstacle course of 3 barrels. The horses are specially trained to take tight corners around the barrels with great speed. It is very exciting to watch. Rodeos here include several events for the ladies, including barrel racing, goat tying, and pole riding. The men ride the bucking horses and bulls, and calf rope.

8) I loved the emotion in the writing, how much work did it take to get right?

Oh my gosh! So much work! I always think it is perfect until my wonderful editor gets a hold of it. She tells me, “We are not mind readers. We don’t live the world in your brain. Spell it out.” I just wish I could let everyone into the world in my mind. It would be easier than trying to write it down. The characters are all there playing over and over like a movie. I just eavesdrop in their world.

9) The Spirit Warriors begs for a second in the series, are you writing one?

It is already written and in editing right now. It will be called Spirit Warriors:The Scarring. It will take off from where we left the kids. This book includes the history of the machayiwiw and more insight into the personalities of the kids, especially Bets. Did you notice the first book had Lilly and Arion on the cover? The second book will have Bets and Electra on the cover.

Here’s a teaser:

Jack walked back to the mangled bodies. He stood there with his head bowed and his hands folded. I knew he was worried for us. We were killers. Charlie, Ollie, Bets, and I had each killed. It didn’t matter that they would have killed us. What mattered was that we were killers. That was the first time I had ever felt a tiny part of my humanity die. It wasn’t a nice feeling.

10) Do you have an expected publication date?

April or May 2014! Sooner if I can get through editing.

Thank you Rosie, for the interview and review of my book Spirit Warriors: The Concealing. You rock my world!
