One Way Fare (Null City, #1)One Way Fare by Barb Taub
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

One Way Fare is an Urban Fantasy story and I really didn’t know what to expect from just the book cover and even the book description, but it blew me away. I really, really enjoyed it. There are delightful sharp witted characters and a storyline with echoes of “Back To The Future” but with so much more depth, twists and it’s own agenda.

The tale involves a war between the Fallen and Angels, humans and a fourth group who hold powers. There is Null City and a marvellous Metro train which takes passengers back and forth through time. The ticket machine was brilliant it kept reminding me of the “Zoltar speaks” fortune telling machine in the film Big.

In 1972 Gaby Parker works for Accounts-On-Demand in Seattle, she has been requested to help sort out the accounts for Luic Le Muir, a top musician. Gaby has a gift where she can see patterns in numbers, it makes her OCD but she soon believes she has found a route to Luic’s draining financial resources, but he’s not going to like her answers.

In 2012 Leila heads to Provence, France, having just been gifted jewels and a Chateau from her birth mother’s family. She’s met by Thomas Chapel who reveals he must guard Leila from the locals who soon turn nasty. Just when it’s needed the local fountain shows a Metro sign and they descend to a magical platform and safety, alighting on the train which arrives calling itself the 1890 Metro.

Thomas has told her about Nephilium, mixes of Angel and human off-spring and they have a choice about their future when the train stops outside Null City. They can stay in Null City, but they will forget all their non-human life details, or they can travel on further and take their places in a prophecy to help save Null City and stop the war.

This was fun, Gaby and Leila will both have to meet to take their parts in the prophecy, so there are scenes in various time lines and the Metro train is useful transport. There are complexities and twists which kept me on my toes, but I was eager to keep the pages turning and urged the characters onwards. Fabulous read, I think I might just have to read the second book in the series.

Meet Barb

In halcyon days BC (before children), Barb Taub wrote a humor column for several Midwest newspapers. With the arrival of Child #4, she veered toward the dark side and an HR career. Following a daring daytime escape to England, she’s lived in a medieval castle and a hobbit house with her prince-of-a-guy and the World’s Most Spoiled AussieDog. Now all her days are Saturdays, and she spends them consulting with her occasional co-author/daughter on Marvel heroes, Null City, and translating from British to American.

One Way Fare published by Hartwood Publishing

Superpowers suck. If you just want to live a normal life, Null City is only a Metro ride away. After one day there, imps become baristas, and hellhounds become poodles. Demons settle down, become parents, join the PTA, and worry about their taxes.

Null City is the only sanctuary for Gaby Parker and Leila Rice, two young women confronting cataclysmic forces waging an unseen war between Heaven and Hell. Gaby and her younger brother and sister are already targets in the war that cost their parents’ lives. Should they forsake the powers that complete their souls and flee to Null City? Meanwhile, Leila has inherited a French chateau, a mysterious legacy, and a prophecy that she will end the world. Gaby and Leila become catalysts for the founding and survival of Null City.

It just would have been nice if someone told them the angels were all on the other side.

After everything, there is peace. The Collective took London away from the gangs that terrorised the city after the plague and the slow terror of the Breakdown. The blood on the streets has dried. There is food, water and good housing. Everyone has work. But the meek have not inherited the earth. On a bitterly cold night a woman is brutalised and murdered, shattering the fragile calm of the city. The investigation of London’s first murder in two years falls to Inspector Timothy Conlan and the District team of the New Metropolitan Police. Tim ‘Con’ Conlan serenely navigates the harsh new London. He is dedicated, conscientious and smiling. Around him society is broken. People are traumatised, fearful and wracked with guilt. Now the dark, empty spaces of the city are being stalked by a monster. Con must find and catch a killer who seems to know his every move. At the same time, there is something rotten at the core of the new government. In the very heart of the Collective, massive lies are being spun. There are rumours of war, whispers of betrayal. The Collective is harsh, relentless and utterly unforgiving. The problem for Con is simple: find the killer; stay alive.

One Way Fare by Barb Taub and Hannah Taub

I have enjoyed Barb Taub’s writing for a while now both through her other two books, Don’t Touch and Tales From Null City, which introduced me to Urban Fantasy, and on her blog at www.barbtaub.com. Here I guarantee she will raise at the very least a smile or two if not have you laughing out loud. I have been meaning to get to One Way Fare, written with her daughter Hannah, for a while now and here is my review.

When Gaby Parker goes to sort out the accounting anomalies for Luic little does either of them know that they are being brought together for a much higher purpose. Gaby is a Harmonia, she loves order, sees patterns and has responsibilities in the form of her younger brother and sister as their parents are dead. Luic is a rock star, I imagined something along the lines of Steve Tyler! But so strong are Gaby’s gifts that she says of Luic, “Sure he was pretty – but this was accounting.’ Brilliant!

Leila Rice, adopted, inherits a chateau where she meets Thomas, both are Nephilim and with much reluctance Thomas has been matched with her as her Protector.

At the beginning of this book we see the stories of both Gaby and Leila told in alternate chapters. As more and more connections are made eventually their stories become one as they find they are being brought together as the catalysts for the founding and survival of Null City. Wars are being waged between Heaven and Hell, Haven and Gifts and with very few clues Gaby and Leila have to do something about saving Null City, the place of safety for all with special powers. Although go there and you have to give up those powers and live a normal life.

This is a complex fantastical tale that spins back and forth through time as Gaby and Leila try to find each other and the answers to the reasons why they need to.

There are many surprises along the way, the reveal of Leila’s father to name by one and plenty of moments that will bring you a smile and have you chuckling throughout the tale. I loved the term ‘Celestially disabled’ in particular and the name of Leila’s coffee shop – priceless! And no I’m not giving that away here…

Highly creative and very well written this book is filled with thoroughly likeable characters, both good and evil. There are strong women and gallant hero’s, romance, true love and sadly, but beautifully done, the heartbreaking parting of people I didn’t want to part.

Some of the best bits for me were the wonderful links that connected throughout the story even right back to the Authors Note at the front. I love it when that amount of attention to detail has been given to a book. Originally told and tightly written this is a highly entertaining start to a series of fantasy books that are a joy to read.

Beach Reads Blog Tour 2015 Day 8 #Beachbooks @GeorgiaRoseBook

Week 2 and we are well into a holiday mood, with our reading.

Georgia Rose Author Photo

Today’s guest on the Beach Reads 2015 Blog Tour is Georgia Rose

Beach Read Postcard

Beach Reads Blog Tour

I’d like to thank Rosie for inviting me on this tour. I imagine this is what it feels like to be chosen to go on Desert Island Discs and as it’s likely to be the closest I ever get to that I’m treating it the same and much like the choices there these have been hard to make – I didn’t think about that when I eagerly said yes! As an author Rosie has said that I can choose one of my own to promote but in an effort not to do an Elisabeth Schwartzkopf from the Roy Plomley era I shall not, though I will add that I do believe mine would make great beach reads and you can find out everything you need to know about them at Georgia Rose Books

Right onto the easy bit first, my ideal holiday destination. We stumbled upon the delights of Gozo a few years ago and have gone there ever since, not to the same villa or the same village mind, we’re not that predictable! Gozo is the tiny island off Malta, and with no airport of its own it’s reached by ferry, which starts the unwinding process. It’s the place I’d run to if, for some reason, I suddenly had to leave England…well you never know do you 😉 I’m not a great traveller but on Gozo I feel safe. The people are friendly, they actually like the British. They drive on the left and have the same telephone and post boxes as us, there are blue lanterns outside their police stations and being there puts me at ease.

So, onto my choices and I’ve had to go about making these in different ways as it has been so difficult. In the end I’ve chosen a book I’ve read before that I’d recommend, one from an author whose other work I have enjoyed, one I’ve had on my TBR list for ages but just haven’t got to from an author whose writing is new to me, an audio book chosen on recommendation and because of the narration and finally a book that from all I hear about it will be a good, fun read and is again from an author whose work I am yet to sample.

A book I would only read (listen to!) on holiday…Time Was: Time and Again Book 1 by Nora Roberts – Audio

Time Was Time and Again Book 1 Audio

I don’t get time to listen to audio books at home and I like the thought of having one to listen to whilst travelling or during those times on a sun bed when I’m completely relaxed and even holding up a kindle seems too arduous – I know #firstworldproblems…shaming. Anyway following reading a great post by Cathy on the Between The Lines Book Blog I’ve been inspired to try Time Was: Time and Again Book 1 by Nora Roberts.

This is from a genre I don’t usually read as it’s a time travel romance and in more ways than one as the book was originally published about 25 years ago.

The blurb reads – ‘Stranded in the present, time traveler Caleb Hornblower’s biggest problem isn’t returning to the twenty-third century – but falling head over heels for the beguiling Liberty Stone, who shows him a love more powerful than time itself. Though Caleb knows he belongs in the future, how can he leave the past, and Liberty, behind?’

What intrigues me most though, and the reason this is on my list, is that Cathy told me that listening to Luke Daniels (the narrator) is like listening to a play with a full cast and I’m looking forward to that.

A book from my favourite genre…Carla by Mark Barry – Kindle

18619851

This was the first book by Mark Barry I read and it is a great introduction to his work and it was whilst I was on holiday last year. It’s psychologically dark, a harrowing romance and I loved it – these are all words which sum up my favourite type of reading matter, along with thriller. It’s the sort of book that leaves you breathless at the end…staring at the wall and I didn’t read anything more that day, I couldn’t, I knew nothing else would come close. I have the paperback but this is fine to read on the kindle though a word to the wise if you are planning on getting Barry’s The Night Porter (and I would if I were you) try to get it in the paperback – there are footnotes you see, to add to the pleasure.

The blurb for Carla:-

John Dexter has problems. Real problems. We’re talking episodes in psychiatric hospitals, and then some. Woe betide any woman he falls in love with. But he’s no mad stalker. He knows himself, understand his own motives and behavioural patterns all too well. The problem is, he can’t stop himself. Then he meets Carla. Twenty-two years his junior, with family problems of her own. CARLA is a novel of obsession, love and loss, exploring very real mental health problems. It centres around an average flat and an average pub in an average English town, but its originality, realism and edgy humour has earned it a certain ‘cult’ status in some internet circles.’

I only have to read the first page of this book and I am drawn right back in there, it is ripe for rereading!

A book I’ve been meaning to read for ages…One Way Fare (Null City Book 1) by Barb Taub – Kindle

18489308

I have read the other two Null City books, Don’t Touch and Tales from Null City, and have wanted to tackle the first one for a while. These books are from a genre I wouldn’t usually choose, urban fantasy, but I’ve challenged myself to read many things since publishing and my eyes have been opened…as they say. Barb Taub is a terrifically engaging writer and her quick wit shines through in her stories so I’m sure I will be as absorbed by her first one as I have been by the others.

The blurb:-

A thrilling chase through time and space, Null City is only a Metro ride away, littered with slick rock stars, stoic warriors, and Nephilim – the descendants of angels.

A book that I believe I could truly escape with is…Diamonds and Dust by Carol Hedges – Paperback

18843459

Like so many others when I pack for a holiday my books go in first. In these days of having a kindle packing is easier but I always take my ‘just in case’ paperback. I’m fearful of something going wrong with the kindle or of me not being able to lie near enough to the plug socket it is currently being charged at so I need a back up.

Now I’ve only heard good things about this book, about the writing, about its authenticity and I do love a good murder. I’m also not very good at choosing books set in the past yet always enjoy them when I do so what’s not to love here?

The blurb:-

When a horrific murder takes place on a dark night in 1860’s London, it changes two women for ever. New light is cast upon past lives they thought they knew so well, and suddenly their futures become intertwined. The death of her uncle will leave eighteen-year-old Josephine King an orphan, an heiress and the owner of a priceless diamond, The Eye of the Khan. For Lilith Marks, a chance finally arises to end her life as a highly paid prostitute and to prove herself as a serious businesswoman. Set against the backdrop of the great gas-lit city, the two women are drawn together in their quest to discover just who killed the man they both loved. Diamonds & Dust is a page-whizzing narrative, with an intricate and absorbing plot that entices you through the teeming streets of Victorian London. If Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle all washed up on a desert island, they might have come up with something like this.

For my fun read, because from everything I’ve read it will be, I choose…Bootcamp Bride by Lizzie Lamb – Kindle

18779783

A few years ago I tried to read Emma by Jane Austen on a sun bed, what a mistake. I have learnt that holidays are not the time for trying to get into a book where the height of excitement involves a letter arriving in a village…at least not for me.

So as I’m not keen on fluffy romances or anything too lightweight I think this will hit the spot nicely – romance, suspense and danger, humorously told – what more could you want.

Take an up-for-anything reporter. Add a world-weary photo-journalist. Put them together . . . light the blue touch paper and stand well back! Posing as a bride-to-be, Charlee Montague goes undercover at a boot camp for brides in order to photograph supermodel Anastasia Markova. At Charlee’s side and posing as her fiancé, is Rafael Ffinch award winning photographer and survivor of a kidnap attempt in Columbia. He’s in no mood to cut inexperienced Charlee any slack and has made it plain that once the investigation is over, their partnership – and fake engagement – will be terminated, too. Soon Charlee has more questions than answers. What’s the real reason behind Ffinch’s interest in the boot camp? How is it connected to his kidnap in Columbia? In setting out to uncover the truth, Charlee puts herself in danger … As the investigation draws to a close, she wonders if she’ll be able to hand back the engagement ring and walk away from Rafa without a backward glance.

Rosie's Book Review Challengers 1

Crystin chose to read and review “One Way Fare” by Barb and Hannah Taub

Here is Crystin’s review;

Title: One Way Fare by Barb Taub and Hannah Taub

Genre: Paranormal Fantasy

What do you get when you have a demon, a half-angel, an accountant with superpowers, and a rock star? A group destined to save the world, apparently.

When the fate of a magical city that allows those with special gifts to live a normal life is threatened, Gaby, Luic, Thomas, and Leila must find a way to save the city and keep history intact. It may be harder than they thought – the angels aren’t necessarily on their side.

One Way Fare was an enjoyable book – the story was interesting, and I found myself wanting to know what was going to happen. I liked the time travel aspects, and the characters were pretty fun to read, too. I did have a few minor problems, though. Without revealing too much, one of the girls ended up with the wrong guy (in my opinion) – there was almost too much emphasis on quoting things I’m not familiar with (I’ve only seen Princess Bride once, and I have no idea what the Evil Overlord’s Manual is …) – and the pacing of the story was a little off. Granted, I usually pick the wrong guy in love triangles, am perfectly aware that I’m hopelessly ignorant of popular culture, and I often have trouble following pacing (mainly because I read too fast). So do take those complaints with a grain of salt.

That said, I did find the book enjoyable, and I’ll definitely pick up the next one to find out what happens next. After all, there are still siblings missing – and maybe there’s still hope for my favorite character.

Book Review Challenge – Book review by Cathy

Today our book review from the recent Book review challenge comes from Cathy at Betweenthelinesbookblog

Rosie's Book Review Challengers 1

Cathy reviewed One Way Fare by Barb & Hannah Taub

18489308

One Way Fare by Barb & Hannah Taub…

This is an amazing story of fantasy, time and dimension travel and strong heroines with superpowers.
Gaby Parker lives with her younger twin brother and sister, who she is looking after and taking care of after the murder of their parents, in 1970’s Seattle. She is a Harmonia, which gives her the ability to see patterns in mostly everything…

Leila Rice, living with her adoptive parents, unaware she is a Nephilim, born of the union between a human and an angel. In 2012 she travels to France to claim the inheritance
left by her birth parents…

A very fast-moving plot told in several timelines with compelling and well-defined characters. Gaby and Leila are strong protagonists, both fun and feisty.

The two girls are unknown to each other initially but they are both caught up, in one way or another, in the war between Heaven and Hell and the story hops between the two of them, each trying to avoid, or deal with, the danger lurking round every corner. Only by visiting the past will they find the answers they need and the only way to get there is by riding the Metro.

Eventually, via their ability to time travel, they meet and journey to the Court of the Fallen, or Hell as it’s better known, peopled by fallen Angels, imps and demons. Gaby and Leila along with Thomas and Luic join forces in the terrible fight to save Null City, their only sanctuary, humanity and the world as they know it.

The detailed historical and place depictions are vivid and made easily imaginable and I love all the pop culture references and the humour running throughout. A very complex and imaginative story told with plot twists a-plenty. The narrative I thought was very good, if a little complicated at times with family dynamics in the past, present and future.

Definitely worth reading if Urban Fantasy/Paranormal is your thing.
