Saturday slot – Talking about the book review challenge

2012_0622 rose for rosie wordpressBook Review Challenge

Saturdays – Glorious – Long lie-ins- late lazy breakfasts- the Weekend newspapers – and still time to sign up for my book review challenge.

So if you only get time to read my blog at the weekend, what have you missed?

This week I launched an idea to highlight the importance of book reviews and to encourage more people to write and post reviews.

Authors have rallied to my call and we have over 60 free copies of books for anyone to read and review. (3 e-copies per book)

All we ask is you read just one book during July and then write a review which I’ll post here.

Starting on Wednesday 25th June we’re starting a series on writing book reviews and their importance to authors, then we’ll be e-mailing e-copies of books to everyone who has signed up to read and review a book.

2012_0622 rose for rosie wordpressBook Review Challenge

Good Morning, Good Morning, come and pull up a seat once again. So how are you feeling? Glad it’s Friday? Come and take the weight off your poor weary limbs and take a relaxing deep breath. In and out, that’s it release the stress. Pull up a pew or find a comfy seat, kick off your shoes, nobody minds here, we’re all friends.

So what have you missed since you last dropped by? We’ve got some more delicious books for you, just whispering to be read…

If this is your first visit or you’ve been too busy to call we have a little book review challenge planned. It’s SO easy to play just a tiny part. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t like books, who doesn’t like a story? We’ve so many to tempt you.

What’s that I hear? It’s too much effort? Not at all. You haven’t got time? What a terrible shame. A whole month to read a book? Could you possible try? Just for me? Please? Pretty please?

I hear you sigh, what to you have to do? It’s JUST SO EASY. Skip on down the page and find a book to tickle your fancy, tweak your eyebrow, or nudge your curiosity.

LIFT your weary limbs and type a few words in the sign up form at the bottom of the page. Now relax and have a cup of tea.

Is that it, you ask? Is that all? W-e-l-l just one more tiny teeny weeny thing….when we send you the book, the one you’ll enjoy, you’ll fly through it in the month of July, I know you will, just one more teeny weeny ever so small….WRITE A REVIEW? WHAT?! I hear you gasp, not a REVIEW surely not? I can’t do that, I don’t know how, they take too long, what if I don’t like the book? Please not a review.

BUT, and my BUT is REALLY important please listen, how’s the tea? BUT when you read a book do you ever talk about it? Do you ever tell others about a good book you’ve read? I see you nod and purse you lips, is that a YES? So couldn’t you possibly, just for me, write down your thoughts on this lovely book, not much, I don’t need an essay, just a few lines. I pause, I see the cracks in your armour you’re beginning to agree, is that a smile and a twinkle in your eye? YIPPEE! I’d grab your hands and we’d dance a little jig but I don’t want you to think I’m more crazy than I am, QUICK, QUICK, QUICK pick a book now. And don’t worry next week we’re doing all sorts of posts about writing that teeny weeny book review that will mean SO MUCH to the authors and me. THANK YOU. Now GO, GO, GO CHOOSE A BOOK.

From July 1st 3 e-copies of the following books will be available FREE for you to choose to read. All we ask is for you to read just 1 and write a review which will then be posted here and other sites where possible. Starting next week on Wednesday 25th June we’ll be posting a series on book reviews to help and advise you.

We’re beginning the book review challenge on Wednesday 25th June with posts from guest book reviewers and authors. There will be book reviewing tips and advice each day in the build up to reading and writing a review.

When books are requested I will confirm by e-mail. Please check your SPAM folder if you think you haven’t heard from me. Similarly when books get sent out by authors they may go into SPAM please do check. I always try to reply within a reasonable time but super efficient spam folders do foil me sometimes.

A Change of Heart by Adrienne Vaughan

A Change of Heart (The Heartfelt Series, #2)A Change of Heart by Adrienne Vaughan

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A Change of Heart is the second book in the Heartfelt series, I fell in love with the Island of Innishmahon and the colourful people who lived there in the first book “The Hollow Heart”. So I was delighted to find the second book took place on the island once more. Carrying straight on from where the first book ended the story heads right in with Ryan stepping off of the ferry with his young son.

On top of the vital repairs to the only bridge to the island, which was washed away in a storm, there are now plans to have a Life Boat station on the island too. Dermot Finnegan takes the role of Life Boat Captain as a disguise for some undercover police work which he has signed up for.

For a tiny island off of the Irish coast it certainly draws everyone’s attention. Superstar actress Angelique de Marcos arrives in a whirl of glamour to challenge Ryan for custody of their son. Erin Brennan is also returning to the island after a long period of absence and she too has her own secret agenda.

Throw in to the mix a Halloween Hooley, robbery, freedom fighters and some brand new relatives, it all has journalist Marianne Coltrane at breaking point, but letting the Emerald Isle work its magic, gives more than one person a second chance.

Romance, Ireland and great characters at their best, I can’t wait for the third book in the series.

Then at the end we will have a small selection of books for challengers to try their hand at writing an informative and interesting review on offer. Anyone can join in authors, readers, writers or someone who just loves books.

Writers

I’m looking to have up to 3 e-copies of several books for challengers to choose just 1 to read and review at the end of the series. I’m looking for romance, fantasy YA, thriller or contemporary books. Contact me via e-mail or the contact form at the top of the blog if you have a book you would like considered.

I already have authors who have offered their books. I will add more books as authors get back to me. You’ll be able to choose  from the following books to read and review;

I Have 3 e-copies of Beginning of a Hero by Charles E Yallowitz (Fantasy)

17447896

Luke Callindor was born into Windemere’s most decorated family of adventurers. Since his birth, he has been treated with the greatest amount of respect and awe. Now, with a lifetime of training and the reckless cockiness of youth, Luke has set out to prove that he deserves the admiration that comes from being a Callindor.

Luke gets his chance when he convinces a royal messenger to hire him to protect the heir of Duke Solomon. This future leader is secretly attending Hamilton Military Academy, an esteemed school run by the former mercenary, Selenia Hamilton. It is a dangerous secret mission requiring that Luke pretend to be an average student while keeping an eye out for any sign of danger. Unfortunately, Luke has no idea which student the heir is and a demonic assassin is already several steps ahead of him. Finding himself in over his head and constantly in trouble, the young warrior realizes that the only things he has on his side are some new friends and his unwavering courage.

Can Luke find and protect the heir while keeping his own head attached to his neck? And, can he avoid being suspended long enough to see his mission through to the end?

We also have 3 e-copies of Kings and Queens by Terry Tyler. (contemporary)

22011018

KINGS AND QUEENS” tells of the life and loves of charismatic Harry Lanchester, which just happen to mirror the story of Henry VIII and his six wives. All the passion and suspense of the Tudor court, but set in modern times.

Harry’s realm is his South of England property developing company, Lanchester Estates, while his ‘wives’ are the twentieth century sisters of their historic counterparts: Anne Boleyn is reincarnated as the equally intriguing Annette Hever, and Henry VIII’s fifth wife with the risqué past, Catherine Howard, lives again in 1999 as Keira Howard, a former lap dancer.

The saga is narrated by each of the six women, in turn, interspersed with short chapters from the point of view of Harry’s lifelong friend, Will Brandon.

Lizzie Lamb will have e-copies of her romance books on offer, either Tall Dark and Kilted or Boot Camp Bride.

Tall Dark and KiltedNotting Hill Meets Monarch of the Glen . . . Fliss Bagshawe longs for a passport out of Pimlico where she works as a holistic therapist. After attending a party in Notting Hill she loses her job and with it her dream of one day being her own boss. When she’s offered the chance to take over a failing therapy centre, she grabs it with both hands. But there’s a catch – the centre lies five hundred miles away – in Wester Ross, Scotland. Fliss’s romantic view of the highlands populated by hunky Men in Kilts is soon shattered when she has an up close and very personal encounter with the Laird of Kinloch Mara, Ruairi Urquhart. He’s determined to pull the plug on the business, bring his eccentric family to heel and eject undesirables from his estate – starting with Fliss. Faced with the dole queue once more, Fliss resolves to make sexy, infuriating Ruairi revise his unflattering opinion of her, turn the therapy centre around and sort out the dysfunctional Urquhart family. Will Fliss tame the Monarch of the Glen and find the happiness she deserves? Read Tall, Dark and Kilted to find out…

Boot Camp Bride - Lizzie Lamb

Boot Camp Bride – Lizzie Lamb

Charlee Montague is an up-for-anything rookie reporter desperate for her big break. She dreams of something, anything, which will take her away from the daily grind at celebrity-driven magazine What’cha! When she is sent undercover to a boot camp for brides on the windswept Norfolk marshes, it seems as if all her Christmases have come at once. Posing as a blushing bride-to-be, Charlee has to get the skinny on supermodel Anastasia Markova and her oligarch Russian boyfriend. However, every rookie needs a more experienced partner as backup and Charlee is no exception. At her side (posing as her fiancé), is award winning photographer Rafael Ffinch. World-weary Rafa has recently survived a kidnap attempt in Colombia and is no mood to cut inexperienced Charlee any slack. Furthermore, he makes it plain at the outset of their assignment that there is no room for love in his complicated life. Once the investigation is over, their partnership and fake engagement will be terminated.

Barb Taub has offered readers a choice from her mature YA books; One Way Fare and Don’t Touch.
18489308

Superpowers suck. If you just want to live a normal life, Null City is only a Metro ride away. After one day there, imps become baristas, and hellhounds become poodles. Demons settle down, become parents, join the PTA, and worry about their taxes.
Null City is the only sanctuary for Gaby Parker and Leila Rice, two young women confronting cataclysmic forces waging an unseen war between Heaven and Hell. Gaby and her younger brother and sister are already targets in the war that cost their parents’ lives. Should they forsake the powers that complete their souls and flee to Null City? Meanwhile, Leila has inherited a French chateau, a mysterious legacy, and a prophecy that she will end the world. Gaby and Leila become catalysts for the founding and survival of Null City.
It just would have been nice if someone told them the angels were all on the other side.

Book 2 in the series;

19229825

Hope flares each morning in the tiny flash of a second before Lette touches that first thing. And destroys it. Her online journal spans a decade, beginning with the day a thirteen-year-old inherits an extreme form of the family “gift.” Every day whatever she touches converts into something new: bunnies, bubbles, bombs, and everything in between.
Lette’s search for a cure leads her to Stefan, whose fairy-tale looks hide a monstrous legacy, and to Rag, an arrogant, crabby ex-angel with boundary issues. The three face an army led by a monster who feeds on children’s fear. But it’s their own inner demons they must defeat first.

Alison Williams has 3 e-copies of her book The Black Hours.

18752098

‘Look upon this wretch, all of you! Look upon her and thank God for his love and his mercy. Thank God that he has sent me to rid the world of such filth as this.’ 1647 and England is in the grip of civil war. In the ensuing chaos, fear and suspicion are rife and anyone on the fringes of society can find themselves under suspicion. Matthew Hopkins, self -styled Witchfinder General, scours the countryside, seeking out those he believes to be in league with the Devil. In the small village of Coggeshall, 17–year-old Alice Pendle finds herself at the centre of gossip and speculation. Will she survive when the Witchfinder himself is summoned? A tale of persecution, superstition, religious fundamentalism, hate and love, ‘The Black Hours’ mixes fact with fiction in a gripping fast-paced drama that follows the story of Alice as she is thrown into a world of fear and confusion, and of Matthew, a man driven by his beliefs to commit dreadful acts in the name of religion.

Jo Sparkes has offered us copies of her YA fantasy The Birr Elixir.

Why is Wen conversing with a llama in the Yorkshire Dales? And what links the beautiful and sacred landscape that is the Heart of Albion with Breakfast in Slug Town? These, and many other questions, must be considered as Don and Wen continue the journey begun in The Initiate exploring the shadowy roots of the ancient myths and legends of these Blessed Isles, steering a perilous path through the murky waters of religious symbolism and iconography. Join them on their continuing quest for knowledge and understanding as they explore the landscape of England and people it with strange creatures and even stranger theories, using sacred intent and guided imagination to penetrate into the mysteries unfolding before them. Illustrated in full colour throughout.

Susan Nicholls is offering copies of her fictionalised real life story. Red Clay and Roses.

Women were supposed to keep quiet and serve, abortion was illegal, adoption difficult, and racism rampant. The discovery of an old ledger opens a window into the dynamics of the 1950s-60s, when the world was beginning to change.

Guest Author Adrienne Vaughan

Today our guest is Adrienne Vaughan author of yesterday’s book The Hollow Heart. Click here to read the review if you missed it. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5bA

AV-Author

Let’s find out more about Adrienne and her writing.

1) Where is your home town?
I was born in Leicester in the East Midlands and brought up in Dublin, Ireland – so I’m very lucky, I have two home towns and still spend time in them both.
2) How long have you been writing?
I was given a Petite Typewriter for Christmas when I was seven, it was turquoise, I loved it, and that was it, my fate was sealed! I wrote poems, short stories and features, cutting out pictures from magazines and making up my own little publications. I’ve never stopped, today I run a busy PR company; we publish lots of company newsletters and I’m proud to be the editor of the Romantic Novelists’ Association magazine, Romance Matters.
3) What one thing sparked the idea for this book?
The Hollow Heart started as a dream. Someone I knew met a famous movie star in a bar, they struck up a conversation and although coming from very different backgrounds, became firm friends. I then dreamt I met a movie star in a pub in Ireland – which can happen there quite easily – but he didn’t want to talk to me because I was in the media. I couldn’t shake it, the scenario kept coming back to me, so I did what I always do when that happens, I wrote it down.
4) The book has a terrible terrorist attack in it, can you tell the readers what the attack was about?
I abhor terrorism. Growing up in Ireland during the seventies, I was acutely aware of how lives can be torn apart by random acts of violence in the name of a ‘cause’. I visited New York after 9/11, we flew over the site of the atrocity, there are no words to describe how that felt. So I wanted a scene that put things into perspective for my heroine, for her to realise how fragile life is, and when she finds something worth living for, to hold on and fight for it. I also wanted to show Ryan, although a movie star, was far from shallow, and I needed them both to have gone through something major, so that when they do fall in love, they will move heaven and earth to be together – and they do!
5) Does the Island of Innishmahon exist in real life?
I’m told it does, lots of readers give me names of places they think the island is based on, some even send me pictures. But no, the island is a combination of many beautiful places I have visited in Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. I do have a map of it though, I’ve drawn it and put the landmarks in, such as the pub and Marianne’s cottage, Weathervane, which is what the novel was originally called.
6) Will we be able to read more about the stolen babies story in the next book?
Oh, yes. I was in the throes of writing about that, when a report came on the news that a similar scam have been discovered in a Convent in Spain, where babies of single girls were being sold on for adoption. Since then many tales have emerged, but I’d made my story up, fact proving to be, as usual, stranger than fiction.
7) Does the second book in the series continue straight on or is there a jump in time like there is in some book series?
Straight on, it opens precisely where The Hollow Heart ends. My husband read the manuscript and when he finished it – apart from saying it should be a film – said: “That’s interesting, it ends at a beginning, you are writing a sequel aren’t you?” I wasn’t!
8) What do you think makes an Irish setting for a book appealing to readers like me?
I’m not sure. The UK and Ireland are similar yet very different, perhaps that’s the attraction, reading about a place that feels familiar and friendly, yet quite alien is intriguing in many ways. The shared language and history is another good foundation. I try hard to ensure my characters, wherever they are from, speak with an authentic voice, so I like to go back to Ireland to ‘get my ear in’ as they say and Ryan’s New York agent, Larry Leeson says elevator not lift, and trunk not boot – a childhood spent watching Kojak has not been wasted.
9) Do you have a favourite part of Ireland yourself?
I’ve too many to select just one, but a hunk of my heart is in the Wicklow mountains, wild and wonderful, it’s called The Garden of Ireland; with snow in the wintertime it could be Scandinavia, yet so close to the sea. A week in Wicklow is my idea of the best spa break in the world, everyone comes back looking amazing!
10) How many books will there be in the Heartfelt series?
I’m currently working on the final book in the series, (here’s an exclusive for you Rosie) called Secrets of the Heart, with more twists and turns for those colourful characters, and another love story or two – but to say anymore than that would be indiscreet!
I have the novel after this one roughly sketched, and much of that will be set in Ireland too, but different, equally lovable characters I hope.
Thank you Adrienne, readers can catch my review of the second book in the Heartfelt series next week.

Year 2, Good Deeds Week 4

Welcome to my second Year of Good Deeds, a challenge I set myself during April 2013. I decided to do at least one Good Deed a day for a whole year.

New Good DeedsThis week I’ve been doing the following;

May 11th – Last week’s sick child has kindly passed me the germs, so I’m slumped on the sofa, but I can still read. Have finished A Change of Heart by Adrienne Vaughan and will write the review up tomorrow. Accepted another book for review, A Woman’s Choice by Annie Thomas. Posted my weekly Good Deed update with lots of links and plugs for various people, that’s really all I can manage today.

May 12th – Written my book review, delivered a birthday card and present and picked up litter. Social networking has lots of plus points when you can only croak at people and you look and feel like something the cat dragged in. No one can see me and I don’t have to verbally speak to anyone, hooray! Pass me another box of tissues will you? About to start reading Suppose by Kathy Steinemann

May 13th – Still struggling to get my voice back. Picked up litter today. Baby birds seem to have doubled in size, still can’t get a long enough glance to count them to make sure they all hatched, they are just a bundle of fluffy moving objects with big open mouths every-time a parent arrives, who then obscures the view from the camera, so frustrating! I bought some live meal worms to put out for all the parent birds who might be grateful of one easy to find meal. But then I found the larvae wriggling out of the container and descending into my garden, hope they don’t devour all my lovely plants! Checked on my Bumble bee box to see if it had any bees in residence, found snails, earwigs and a family of Mice! So the garden is definitely full of livestock.

May 14th – Going to be reading and reviewing The Lost Centurion by Monica La Porta due out at the end of May. Posted a letter and picked up more litter.

May 15th – Agreed to read and review “Fallen for Rock” Nicky Wells soon to be released latest book. Also said I’d review the next book from Randy Mixter called “A Gunman’s Destiny” due out at the end of May. Picked up some litter. Am reading “The Manila Strangler” by Steven Donahue Good Deeds received a fellow author bought a copy of my book today as a thank you for reading and reviewing her book, made my day!

May 16th – Picked up litter. Found a great post on The Kindness blog about speaking only kind words and turning your life around; Speak Kind Words, Receive Kind Echoes sounds a really good idea, every time you find yourself saying something mean and negative you have to pay out $1 or £1 depending where you live. The money will soon add up unless you make a positive change. Any one up for it? I’m going to start my own challenge and donate my money to charity. First I’m going to try 24hrs from 5pm UK time. It’s frightening we all pass on bad news and gossip much more readily than good news, but does gossip  and band mouthing others really make the world a better place?

This week the lovely Alison Williams has been having a look at my book in terms of editing. I’m the first to hold my hands up and say that the whole writing a book and self-publishing bit was absolutely brilliant and now I’ve learnt all about how I should have approached it. Stay with me folks, I need to pledge a commitment to sorting out the book and making it a lot more pleasant to read. Stop all the procrastinating and get on with it. So you heard it here on the blog, there will be a second edition, I’m going to look forward to making all the necessary revisions. (See, positive self talk, no dishing myself – can’t afford it!)

May 17th – Oh my goodness, it’s 7pm and I’ve just realised I’ve completed my first challenge, 24 hours saying only kind things. It’s not been all plain sailing, I had 2 wobbles and it nearly cost me money, but I changed my sentences ending on a positive note. I was quite quiet at one time when I chose not to join a conversation which was only negative. Now for another 24 hours! I’m reading A Woman’s Choice by Annie Thomas and today’s book review was for the first book in one of my favourite series The Wardstone Chronicles by Joseph Delaney.

Year 2 Good Deeds Week 3

Welcome to my second Year of Good Deeds, a challenge I set myself during April 2013. I decided to do at least one Good Deed a day for a whole year.

New Good DeedsThis week I’ve been doing the following;

May 4th – There’s a lovely bit of a buzz for my new page on Editing, Publishing and More I hadn’t realised it might be quite popular.

Our bird box with its camera and our Blue-tit family which I began to tell everyone about last week has had several people chatting too.

May 5th – May Bank Holiday today so things are a bit quiet, not helped by having no internet for most of the day. I was able to add book reviewer “A Woman’s Wisdom” to the growing resources for writing as mentioned above. I think I’ll rename the title of the page, I’m still playing with it all. Sent the eldest child off with edible goodies when she met up with friends.

May 6th – Yesterday’s lack of internet went downhill , when within an hour of its return the whole area lost all its electricity. 5 hours later we were connected back up by a huge generator which is parked outside our back gate and is powering the whole estate. It’s noisy but at least we have electric. Finally got my review of Kings and Queens by Terry Tyler written, and it will appear here on the blog early June. Let a gentleman go before me in the supermarket queue as he only had one item. Added 2 more people to the page that I’m now going to call Resources for writers, Editing, publishing and more.

May 7th – Stuck at home today with a sick child, I have agreed to review The Manila Strangler by Steven Donahue it will join a small queue of books that I have at the moment. Today on the blog there was a guest author interview with Jack Croxall click here if you missed it http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-50R

May 8th – Getting back to normal today, picked up litter. WE HAVE BABIES! The blue-tits are starting to hatch this evening. So far we have 3 out of 7.

May 9th – There is a bundle of grey fluff in the blue-tit nest so not sure how many we’ve got to, with the glimpses we’re getting. Lots of activity and mad feeding going on.

Dropped some books off at the charity shop, picked up some litter. Friends came over for a Spring-watch session on the TV. We watched a grainy grey picture of tiny fledglings stumbling about the nest, climbing over each other and the un-hatched eggs, the Dad coming in with caterpillars so huge he didn’t know how to get them into his offspring’s mouths and the mother bird taking them from him and mashing them up for the babies in her own mouth. Nature is so amazing.

May 10th – A bit of IT help for my Mum this morning. Picked up litter on the way home. Finished reading The Hollow Heart by Adreinne Vaughan and sent off my review. Started the second book in the series, A change of Heart. Good deeds received ; Off out for a 50th birthday party tonight and being picked up by friends.
