Karen chose to read “The Birr Elixir” by Jo Sparkes

The Birr Elixir by Jo Sparkes

The Birr Elixir by Jo Sparkes

Here is her review.

The book introduces you to Marra, a young apprentice in a herb shop. Drail, a comet player, asks for an energy potion. Her instructor, Britta, is dead, and she brews a potion similar to one in Britta’s Book. Drail’s team wins, and they rescue her from her new boss. It is a story of new beginnings, moral values, and belief in one’s capabilities. I will not tell you more about the story than shown in the Goodreads plot description. This would spoil the fun of reading this book yourself.

With The Birr Elixir, Jo Sparkes has created a fantasy story of unusual travel companions, a global ball sport and important contests, rivalry between two nations, and intrigue. The Birr Elixir is an entertaining, gripping, and fast-paced read, making you want to read more. I was drawn into the story right away. I felt quite close to the travel companions and their experiences. All characters were believable, still leaving room for the readers’ imagination. The Birr Elixir is a great story for fantasy and sports lovers. The Birr Elixir is the first book of The Legend of the Gamesmen series. The second book in this series, The Agben School, will certainly be one of my next reads.

This is a book to read again.

The Agben School by Jo Sparkes

The Agben SchoolThis is the second book in The Legend of the Gamesmen Fantasy Series. The story continues with Drail’s team The Hand of Victory arriving in Missea. Home to the great Skullan Gamesmen. With them travels Tryst, kidnapped and disguised Prince of the realm and Marra herb girl or Brista to the team. Each time the men play she brews a special elixir for them to drink to improve their skills on the playing field.
But Tryst is denied access to the palace. Everything has changed since he left over a year ago on his epourney. A journey to see the world and come home an experienced man. Rumours have spread that Truemen have murdered the Prince and that an imposter may be in his place.
Meanwhile Drail and his Gamesmen must begin at the bottom of the Gamesmen league after a humiliating start in the Gold Harbour arena. Marra is in danger and goes to the Agben school to learn more about herbs and potions. Here they discover she has a rare and natural talent and she uses her skills to help both Drail and Tryst uncover a deep and sinister plot.
This series just gets better, I really enjoyed all of Marra’s experiences at the Agben school and the games of Comet are mush easier to follow now that I’m into the second book. The story will continue in the next book.

Guest Author Jo Sparkes

Today our guest is Jo Sparkes author of yesterday’s book The Birr Elixir. Here is a link to my book review if you missed it. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5dY

Jo Sparkes

Let’s find out more about Jo and her writing.

1) Where is your home town?
Rison, Maryland. Right next to Washington, D.C.
2) How long have you been writing?
Since before I could read. I actually use to scribble on paper, and tell my mother I was writing. I wrote my first full length book when I was twelve years old. For some reason, it was rejected by the publisher.
3) Do you have a favourite genre to write in and why?
I don’t think so — although there are those I doubt I’ll ever attempt. I get caught by a situation, a character in a circumstance. Somehow everything else springs up from that. I do think there should be various elements in any good story — some humour in a drama, adventure in a horror, etc. That lends it depth.
4) What was the one idea which sparked the Gamesmen Legend series?
I knew a very great athlete — and was mesmerized by his spirit. I suppose it was an easy step to create a young apprentice, a girl trying to make her place in the world, who reaches past her ability to help him. And in doing so triggered an amazing adventure.
5) How many books are you planning for the series?
Three. The second one, The Agben School, comes out end of July.
6) Can you tell the readers a bit about Mistress Britta, was she an Agben?
She was in the past, but had left. In the second book, we may wonder exactly what her role was in the kidnapping of the Prince.
7) For readers who might be tempted by the book can you give us a quick guide to the game of Comet?
There’s a basket and four balls. The basket is in the centre of the field of play, and each ball is worth certain points when sunk — but that value is hidden beneath a sticky dust that slowly comes off as the game is played.
And there are four teams of four men — which can make it a rather violent game.
8) Why is the Mark of Health necessary for travel in this world?
On the Great Continent, the Skullan race is disdainful of the Trumen race in general, and believe Trumen from the desert continent to be little above animals. They claim they fear some sort of desert disease, although the cost of gaining such a mark is so high it naturally keeps most from ever leaving the desert.
9) Can you give us a few hints as to what to expect in the next book? Do you have an expected publication date for it?
Tryst gets to Missea — but finds getting into the Palace to see his father is not easy. The conspiracy goes to the highest levels. For Drail, his dream comes far too easily — and then blows up in his face.
And Marra finds herself in deep trouble after trying to help Tryst — and has nowhere to turn but the mysterious Agben School.
Book 2 is called The Agben School, and will be released soon — at the end of July.
10) What else have you written? Where can readers find out more about you?
I have a few non-fiction books, including Feedback  How to Give It  How to Get It. It’s what I’ve learned in writing for some interesting producers — about handling feedback properly.
You can find more about me here: http://josparkes.com/  or talk to me on twitter, @Sparkes777.
Thanks, Rosie. It’s a pleasure talking to you.
It’s been a pleasure Jo, Good Luck with the next book.

The Birr Elixir by Jo Sparkes

The Birr ElixirThe Birr Elixir by Jo Sparkes

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The Birr Elixir is book one in the Legend of Gamesmen series. It is a fantasy with several themes going on which will pan out further in later books. Tryst is a Prince who must set out on a coming of age journey into manhood called a epourney. He must travel the realm to learn about the people and the land before he can become their leader.

Marra works in a potions shop. Sadly Mistress Britta died before her studies were complete, but she can still learn from Britta’s book. Treated badly by Britta’s brother, Marra is rescued from the shop by Drail.

Drail is a Gamesman. He and his team play a fast ball game called Comet. Britta becomes their Brista, a potion maker. She brews a potion to give them strength before their games. The Gamesmen travel the country playing matches and hope to be able to enter the Solstice Championships in Port Leet.

When Drail rescued Marra, they also found a heavily drugged man, they took him with them. He slept for days before Marra could awaken him. The mystery man, realises he’s been kidnapped and must find a way to return to the Great Continent. His chance comes when Drail and his team earn the Mark of Health Tatoo and can board a ship travelling away from the Wavering Continent.

This is a well thought out fantasy world and the game of comet is fascinating. I look forward to reading the next book and finding out where it leads the characters.

Good Deeds Year 2, Week 9

Welcome to my second Year of Good Deeds, a challenge I set myself during April 2013. I decided to do at least one Good Deed a day for a whole year.

New Good DeedsDuring my week I’ll also being updating you on My Kindness Challenge which I’m also doing. I read about a new challenge to make the world a better place to live in. “Speak Kind Words, Receive Kind Echoes” see the inspiration on  The Kindness blog . During my learning process I’m donating money to charity for my slip-ups to make me work harder to achieve results. I earn no money from any of my book reviews, so having little to spare should focus my mind.

This week I’ve been doing the following;

June 15th – Met a friend at the shops and asked after her mother who had recently broken her hip. Visited my parents and helped Mum with a little computer question. Discussed with my Dad, how to collect a swarm of bees should I ever find one and he’s not around. (He keeps bees)

June 16th – My morning helping out at school. Then a NEW mad capped idea to run a series on book reviewing ending with a challenge to readers getting them to read and review a book and get it posted here on the blog. Drafted up my review of Dispassionate Lies by Eileen Schuh.

June 17th – Mad blogger syndrome still taking hold as I badger people to help me with the book review series challenge,  giving bloggers and authors a chance to promote themselves.

Made my friend’s day when I saw her new picture on Twitter and sent her a compliment. Thought she looked a “Super hot Mamma”!

June 18th – This spontaneous idea stuff is a bit scary sometimes! I am having so much FUN. Who would have thought that my week would turn out like this? Back story here, when I came home at lunchtime on Monday the day was dreary and I felt low and depressed. Not wanting to feel this way I asked myself how I wanted to feel. I wanted to be happy and bubbly, so I asked what made me happy and bubbly? The answer came; Having fun on my blog and helping people. So I thought, what do I do on my blog? I do book reviews, why? Because I think they’re really important to authors and readers. So I literally started weaving a plan around that one idea, now look at it. I’ve got loads of FREE books from authors, I’ve got friends and fellow bloggers writing articles for me, people are signing up to the review challenge and it’s complete madness and I’m loving every minute of it.

The winner of a copy of Boot Camp Bride by Lizzie Lamb was delighted to receive her copy of the book today.

Finished reading The Mystery Box by Eva Pohler,

June 19th – Am reading The Agben School by Jo Sparkes, second book in The Legend of the Gamesmen series, which will soon be coming hot off the presses. Adding more books to my book review challenge and drafting up pieces of advice on book reviewing. Discussed with fellow author Stephanie Hurt the possibility of running our very successful Romancing September Tour again this year. Let us know if you’d be interested, last year we did author interviews, book promos and talked about writing romance in 2 locations around the world each day for 30 days. Haven’t discussed if we’ll follow the same format or make a few changes, will keep you all posted.

June 20th – Still busy with the Book review Challenge posts. Walked to the post box at lunchtime and picked up litter on my way home. Here’s a link to one of the posts about the challenge http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5kG

Left a little comment on a fellow blogger’s site to help cheer her up and I hoped it helped.

June 21st – Tonight we’re off out bearing gifts to help celebrate our friends 25th Wedding Anniversary. Had a great time and donated money to The Children’s Cancer Trust as the bar was free, but asked for donations. Started reading In Praise Of Lilith, Eve And The Serpent In The Garden Of Eden And Other Stories by Susan Scott. Got inspired by the first essay to clean my house as a reflection of cleaning up my life. Such a good book.

Saturday slot – Talking about the book review challenge

2012_0622 rose for rosie wordpressBook Review Challenge

Saturdays – Glorious – Long lie-ins- late lazy breakfasts- the Weekend newspapers – and still time to sign up for my book review challenge.

So if you only get time to read my blog at the weekend, what have you missed?

This week I launched an idea to highlight the importance of book reviews and to encourage more people to write and post reviews.

Authors have rallied to my call and we have over 60 free copies of books for anyone to read and review. (3 e-copies per book)

All we ask is you read just one book during July and then write a review which I’ll post here.

Starting on Wednesday 25th June we’re starting a series on writing book reviews and their importance to authors, then we’ll be e-mailing e-copies of books to everyone who has signed up to read and review a book.

2012_0622 rose for rosie wordpressBook Review Challenge

Good Morning, Good Morning, come and pull up a seat once again. So how are you feeling? Glad it’s Friday? Come and take the weight off your poor weary limbs and take a relaxing deep breath. In and out, that’s it release the stress. Pull up a pew or find a comfy seat, kick off your shoes, nobody minds here, we’re all friends.

So what have you missed since you last dropped by? We’ve got some more delicious books for you, just whispering to be read…

If this is your first visit or you’ve been too busy to call we have a little book review challenge planned. It’s SO easy to play just a tiny part. You wouldn’t be here if you didn’t like books, who doesn’t like a story? We’ve so many to tempt you.

What’s that I hear? It’s too much effort? Not at all. You haven’t got time? What a terrible shame. A whole month to read a book? Could you possible try? Just for me? Please? Pretty please?

I hear you sigh, what to you have to do? It’s JUST SO EASY. Skip on down the page and find a book to tickle your fancy, tweak your eyebrow, or nudge your curiosity.

LIFT your weary limbs and type a few words in the sign up form at the bottom of the page. Now relax and have a cup of tea.

Is that it, you ask? Is that all? W-e-l-l just one more tiny teeny weeny thing….when we send you the book, the one you’ll enjoy, you’ll fly through it in the month of July, I know you will, just one more teeny weeny ever so small….WRITE A REVIEW? WHAT?! I hear you gasp, not a REVIEW surely not? I can’t do that, I don’t know how, they take too long, what if I don’t like the book? Please not a review.

BUT, and my BUT is REALLY important please listen, how’s the tea? BUT when you read a book do you ever talk about it? Do you ever tell others about a good book you’ve read? I see you nod and purse you lips, is that a YES? So couldn’t you possibly, just for me, write down your thoughts on this lovely book, not much, I don’t need an essay, just a few lines. I pause, I see the cracks in your armour you’re beginning to agree, is that a smile and a twinkle in your eye? YIPPEE! I’d grab your hands and we’d dance a little jig but I don’t want you to think I’m more crazy than I am, QUICK, QUICK, QUICK pick a book now. And don’t worry next week we’re doing all sorts of posts about writing that teeny weeny book review that will mean SO MUCH to the authors and me. THANK YOU. Now GO, GO, GO CHOOSE A BOOK.

From July 1st 3 e-copies of the following books will be available FREE for you to choose to read. All we ask is for you to read just 1 and write a review which will then be posted here and other sites where possible. Starting next week on Wednesday 25th June we’ll be posting a series on book reviews to help and advise you.

We’re beginning the book review challenge on Wednesday 25th June with posts from guest book reviewers and authors. There will be book reviewing tips and advice each day in the build up to reading and writing a review.

When books are requested I will confirm by e-mail. Please check your SPAM folder if you think you haven’t heard from me. Similarly when books get sent out by authors they may go into SPAM please do check. I always try to reply within a reasonable time but super efficient spam folders do foil me sometimes.
