Business As Usual - E.L. Lindley

Business As Usual – E.L. Lindley

As we meet former teacher, now a Los Angeles based documentary film maker, Georgie Connolly, she is about to start a stint of community service. Due to an embarrassing mix up she was convicted of driving under the influence. Her penance is to teach media studies to decidedly uncooperative students one day a week. Georgie is a volatile character, with an explosive temper, and sometimes (a lot of the time actually) acts before thinking things through properly, landing her, and sometimes the people around her, in precarious situations. But underlying her irritability and tendency to jump in with both feet, she has a good and caring heart and is quite sensitive.

James Finn, an ex Marine, is hired, albeit reluctantly on James’ part, by his friend, Eric, who is also Georgie’s boss and her best friend’s husband, to protect Georgie from a white supremacist, out for revenge and sending death threats. Georgie exposed the group in a previous documentary and as Georgie bounces from disaster to disaster James is in turn infuriated with her and trying to deny the spark of attraction growing between them.

When one of Georgie’s students goes missing, Georgie’s attention is drawn to Maxim Petrov, a questionable Russian and suspected abductor, with ties to ‘gentlemen’s clubs’ and the seedier side of life. Not one to let an opportunity pass her by, Georgie decides to investigate Petrov by making him her next documentary subject, not realising just how dangerous and corrupt he is until it’s too late.

I like the twist of Georgie making documentaries instead of being connected to law enforcement. The cast of characters surrounding Georgie are all interesting, real and easy to identify with. The relationship between Georgie and James had me wanting to knock some sense into them both at times though.

This is a fun and entertaining read, even though there are darker aspects and menacing connotations involving corruption, prostitution and trafficking, both in drugs and girls. This adds to the drama, and the action and suspense is kept on the boil throughout. The story flows, and is paced well. I look forward to following more of Georgie’s adventures.

Mystery Book Tour Day 4 #MysteryNovember The Ties That Bind by E.L. Lindley

November Mystery Tour

Welcome to Day 4 of the Mystery November book tour. Today our guest is E.L. Lindley with her book The Ties That Bind.

Where is your home town?

My home town is Sheffield which is in South Yorkshire. It’s a lovely area because it’s a vibrant city but we’re also surrounded by beautiful countryside.

When did you first write a mystery?

The first novel I wrote was Business As Usual which is the first story in the Georgie Connelly series. Since then, I’ve written three more in the series and I’m currently working on numberfive.

What is your favourite sub-genre of mystery?

As a reader, mysteries are my favourite genre so I suppose it’s only natural that I would head in that direction as a writer. I love reading all mysteries from the more gritty Jack Reacher series to the wacky Stephanie Plum novels. I think my favourites are probably somewhere inthe middle; a serious core but peppered with light-hearted humour and romance. In my own novels, I tend to tackle serious subjects by way of the crimes that are being committed but offset that with Georgie Connelly’s fun approach and the cast of characters who are her support system.

Tell us about the idea which sparked The Georgie Connelly series.

I think I just write the books I want to read. I wanted to create a female protagonist who is tough and tenacious but soften her with humour to make her more appealing. Georgie Connelly has lots of annoying characteristics – she’s bull-headed, arrogant and constantly puts her foot in it but she is loyal to a fault with a big heart.

What is Georgie’s job?

Georgie is a documentary filmmaker who has won awards for her hard-hitting exposes. She is a Brit but based in LA because of the film industry being concentrated there. As a result of her work as a filmmaker, she often becomes embroiled with people who are the victims, or indeed perpetrators, of wrongdoing and she is not the kind of person who can look the other way. Consequently she finds herself fighting crime on a regular basis.

What is the mystery element of this book?

In The Ties That Bind, Georgie is reunited with her mother, Marilyn. The two of them have been estranged for a number of years and find themselves thrown together in less than favourable circumstances when Marilyn is accused of murder. Marilyn is an exasperating character and great fun to write but, for all her faults, Georgie is convinced of her mother’s innocence and sets about trying to exonerate her.

Why is Georgie looking into Public Schools?

Georgie finds herself working undercover in a public school because her investigation leads her into the world of gangs. In order to gain some insight into what’s going on, she needs to have contact with some of the young people who part of gang culture. Georgie started her working life as a media teacher in an inner-city London comprehensive school so the idea isn’tas far-fetched as it may seem.

Who else helps Georgie solve the crimes in this book?

In the previous book, Business As Usual, Georgie met James Finn who, was assigned by her boss and friend Eric Delaney, to act as a sort of bodyguard as she has a tendency to ruffle a lot of feathers with her often controversial documentaries. The two have become firm friends and there’s definitely a spark of romance which The Ties That Bind builds upon. James has formed a private investigative partnership with his old friend Julie Sellars and the two of them help Georgie with her investigation. Eric is married to Georgie’s best friend Callie and they are a constant support to Georgie as is her friend Sean Collins, who is something of a maverick police detective. These characters are fixtures in all of the Georgie Connelly stories.

Tell us a little about the other books in the series.

Business As Usual introduces the character of Georgie Connelly and, in this debut novel, Georgie’s expose on gentlemen’s clubs brings her into contact with a dangerous Russian gangster who, it turns out, is involved in people trafficking and forcing young women into the sex industry. At the same time, Georgie finds herself being stalked by a white supremacist who was the subject of one of her previous documentaries.

The third in the series, after The Ties That Bind, is The Righteous Path which involves a religious cult and sees Georgie going undercover in order to try and locate missing girl who may have been recruited by the cult. The cult leader is a charismatic man called Jed Munro and it’s uncertain whether he genuinely believes his own ideology or is simply a ruthless manipulator.

The fourth book in the series is False Allegiance and in this one Georgie finds herself investigating a college sorority where some of the members may be responsible for the death of a young woman.

Although the books are sequential and we see the relationships between the characters developing throughout the series, they can also be read as standalone stories.

Business As Usual – E.L. Lindley

Let’s read her review.

Business As Usual by E.L. Lindley

Format: Kindle
Released: 9th Oct 2011
Genre: Crime/Thriller

Georgie Connelly is a documentary film maker who is ordered to do community service, after she is found guilty of driving under the influence (a silly misunderstanding). She thinks that things couldn’t possibly get any worse until she meets Josh and Terri, two students in her class where she is completing her community service as a media teacher.
Through Josh and Terri, Georgie is introduced to Maxim Petrov, a Russian gangster involved in drug trafficking and prostitution. She decides to make Maxim her next documentary project leading her into a world of corruption and danger. She wants to make Maxim pay for all the things he has done, but in doing so she puts not only herself at risk but also James Finn, Eric and Sean at risk.
Eric is not only Georgie’s boss but also one of her closest friends, especially since he is married to her best friend Callie. He hires James Finn to keep an eye on Georgie due to a vengeful white supremacist being on the loose, who is seeking revenge after Georgie exposed him and his family in a previous documentary.

Sean is the officer who Georgie helped to put Dwayne Carmichael (the white supremacist) away, and comes to the rescue with the aid of Julie Sellars, an FBI agent who has been working undercover to bring down Maxim Petrov.

This is the first in the Georgie Connelly series and I really liked it. From the moment I started it, I liked pretty much all the characters in it, I even felt for Maxim in some parts, especially when he talks about his relationship. Although, those feelings are short lived by the end of the book and I couldn’t wait to see if karma was going to get the better of him at the end.

My favourite characters has to be James and Melvyn, the cab driver who Georgie becomes fond of and builds a friendship with after she asks him to follow James to a restaurant one day, convincing Melvyn that James is her husband who she suspects is cheating on her.

James comes across as a closed book who is quite moody, but at the same time you can see that he is an honest, loyal ex-marine who wants to protect those closest to him. The relationship between Georgie and James is a love/hate relationship, but it’s clear to see that there are some feelings between them that need resolving.

I also loved how E.L. Lindley showed the characters from the strip clubs such as Steve and Melanie. I don’t know if the author intended it but I liked that their characters showed them as being human with sad stories to tell, and regardless of their professional world, they are just like the rest of us.

All in all, I definitely enjoyed this book and would give it 5/5 stars, due to the fact that the story kept me hooked with the twists and turns but I found it really easy going to get into.

I look forward to reading the next instalment of the Georgie Connelly series.

Book Review Challenge – Book Review by Susan Nicholls

Next we have a book review from Review Challenger Susan Nicholls.

Business As Usual - E.L. Lindley

Business As Usual – E.L. Lindley

Here is Susan’s Review.

Business As Usual by E.L. Lindley

Book Review for Rosie’s Challenge: S.K. Nicholls

This was a refreshingly clever change from typical police procedural, detective, private investigator type crime fiction. Georgie Connelly’s business is making documentary films with some seriously dangerous subjects. A British woman in Los Angeles, she is a bit of a loose cannon and tough as nails, but has a soft and vulnerable side wherein she displays her insecurities. Her heart is pure, even though she can come off as brassy, sarcastic and insensitive, she means well. The cast of characters that surrounds her is well rounded and interesting. James Finn, a former military man assigned to protect her, tries desperately to predict and understand her behaviors. Her friends are like family, loyal and supportive. The antagonists are ruthless and cruel, despicable.

I enjoyed this book immensely. It started off slow for a crime thriller and I thought it was going to be more of a cozy mystery, but around 10% the action kicked in and it DID NOT lull at all throughout the entire book. There is a camp that says all crime novels should start off immediately with a bang in the midst of an action scene. It is a tradeoff, really. The character development in this novel was superb. The plot is an intelligent weave of colorful threads with both knots and bows. There are a few typos and repetitive adjectives, but the story was very well written and well organized. I highly recommend if you are looking for a fast paced, interesting, and absorbing read.

Five out of Five Stars.

Business As Usual by E.L.Lindley

Business As UsualBusiness As Usual by E.L. Lindley

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Business As Usual is the first book in the Georgie Connelly crime series. Georgie is a documentary film maker, and we meet Georgie as she plans her next job to expose Gentleman’s Clubs.

Worried for her safety from a previous job, Georgie’s boss Eric, employs ex-marine James Finn to look after her, but trouble finds Georgie in several ways. Firstly she’s been found drunk and disorderly and forced to do several hours of community service at a local school. When one of her students, 16 year old Terri, goes missing, fingers point to En Vogue a high end of the market club run by Russian businessman Maxim Petrov.

Never one to listen to advice Georgie storms right in to Petrov’s world in an attempt to find Terri. Petrov definitely needs exposing but he is a dangerous man with plenty of influence in high places. Georgie’s documentary research leads her in to serious danger when her Maverick spirit takes her one step too far.

This was a great read with a storyline which kept me enthralled and wanting to know what trouble Georgie will get herself into in the next book.

Year 2, Good Deeds, Week 2

Welcome to my second Year of Good Deeds, a challenge I set myself during April 2013. I decided to do at least one Good Deed a day for a whole year.

New Good DeedsThis week I’ve been doing the following;

April 27th – I’m reading Business as Usual by E.L.Lindley, the first book in the Georgie Connelly series. Fellow blogger John Howell, suggested I call my April A-Z tour, my 26 Good Deeds, not a bad idea! I must tell you about our bird box, we installed a camera recently and we have a Blue-tit sitting on 6 or 7 eggs, it’s like a new TV channel. Nothing to do with Good Deeds, but I thought it might make a few of you smile. E-mailed a friend whose daughter should be quite excited and want to come and have a watch.

April 28th – My morning volunteering at school.

Always on a mission to help others, I’ve set up a page on the top of the blog giving details of fellow bloggers who provide editing, publishing and marketing services for authors and writers. There’s just 3 names at the moment but I’m sure it will grow.

April 29th – We are having a lot of heavy rain showers, but I needed fresh air and exercise after I came home from work, so I set out on a walk to re-energise myself. Picked up loads of wet soggy litter for my days Good Deed.

April 30th – A busy day in social media land. I’ve completed the April A-Z tour and shall be sad to see it go for another year. May editions of the 2 magazines I write book reviews for are both out online today so I’ve been writing a post and letting authors know that their books are being showcased. Here is a link to the post. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-59A Have also been over to help my Mum out with her latest computer niggles.

And of course I’ve been watching our own Springwatch channel and keeping an eye on Mummy Blue-tit (Daddy might be helping too, but the picture is a grainy black and white so we can’t tell) and her eggs. We have considered naming the identical  eggs just for the sake of it and have come up with Shell-y, Shell-by, Shell-don, Shell-enka, Shell-et. Shell-wah and Shell-om, not that we can tell them apart! The eggs are also moved and turned several times a day as part of their incubation, so it’s all good fun watching. Can’t wait for them to hatch I’m sure there will be some right little characters. Have friends coming over on Friday to sit and watch out new TV channel too. It’s lovely to see teenagers mad keen on nature.

May 1st – Happy May Day! So what’s it doing? Raining! Another cricket match has been cancelled, we’re not having a lot of luck. I’m reading the new Terry Tyler book Kings and Queens, a modern day interpretation of the life of Henry VIII. I love all the names she drops in such as Harry Lanchester (our main man), Cathy Ferdinand (first wife), Tom Morely (advisor), Wolsey has just turned up and I’m on to the lady whose role echoes Anne Boleyn, absolutely brilliant so far. If you know anything about Henry VIII, but you love contemporary fiction it’s well worth a read.

I feel the need…..to go out for a lunchtime walk and pick up some more litter, after I’ve checked the Blue-tits….

I’m back and I’m wet, but I filled a bag with litter, I’ve recycled the drinks cans and the glass bottle and thrown the rest in the bin I have a request to all my readers; Every-time you go out please pick up 1 piece of litter. Thanks.

Good Deeds received; Thank you to the lovely Lizzie Lamb who got my blog a mention on Thursday on Look 4 Books , The UK’s Premier Independent Book Site, run by Gary Walker, it’s a FREE promotional book site for Indie authors http://www.look4books.co.uk/

May 2nd – Have baked a Tea bread and some fairy cakes as we have friends coming over this afternoon to watch the new Bird Channel on TV, no sign of the eggs hatching yet! Good Deeds received, our friends brought around cakes for us and some information about University for my daughter.

May 3rd – Fascinating! We spent an hour and a half just watching the bird channel last night, the Mummy bird is hardly ever still. We saw the Dad come in a feed the mother for the first time. Today my Mum came over to view the new channel, we’ll have to start selling tickets soon!

I have changed my book gallery on the side of the blog to advertise new books for authors, there are just so many new books I want to tell people about.

That wraps it up for this week.

Reflections on the April 2014 A-Z Tour

The 2014 April A to Z Challenge, had over 2000 bloggers taking part this year it was an awesome tour to get involved in. If you’ve not heard about it, nip over to the April AtoZ Challenge website after you’ve read this post.

Firstly I want to thank Arlee Bird for continuing to organise the annual tour. Secondly A REALLY BIG THANK-YOU to all the authors who let me use their books for my challenge, without you and all your support sharing the posts it just wouldn’t be the same.

So how has it all gone? For me it’s all about planning. I began my journey at the end of January, I knew it would takes weeks to gather all the authors and the information I would need for the tour. I contacted friends and fellow authors and I sent out Tweets about my tour offering FREE advertising of work for authors. I even ended up stalking authors and inviting them to take part.

So what did we all get from the tour? Well hopefully readers were introduced to new books and new authors, TBR piles are now groaning under the weight of all the books on readers bookshelves. I’m hoping that the authors got some new sales and I, made some new blogging friends and supporters. At the bottom of this post I’ve highlighted bloggers that I’ve been particularly impressed by with their own tour. If you’ve not visited their blogs yet do take a moment if you can. I’ve been all over the world visiting bloggers taking part in the challenge. Each day I made a point of promoting up to 5 bloggers from the sign up sheet, some days I found they were no longer able to do the challenge, but people seemed to have had great fun. There really are some amazing bloggers out there.

On April 16th, this day in the tour also coincided with the end of a year long challenge which began this time last year. During last years challenge I set about reading a book called “A Year of Doing Good” by Judith O’Reilly. This wonderful lady spent a whole year doing good deeds. I decided to try it for myself. An enormous challenge I began with tiny steps, if I could make it to the end of April, then I would carry on. My deeds may not have been as great as Judith’s but I have made it, I’ve collected my small change, donated money, given books and clothes to charity, I volunteer at a local school, I pick up litter, bake cakes, send gifts and thank-you notes and letters to friends plus I’ve done a whole host of other deeds. AND I’m going to do it all again! YES I’ve decided to carry on, you can follow my challenge on Sunday’s when I blog about my latest weeks.

My own April A-Z tour was set around the theme of books, here are a list of books and authors who featured on this tour.
