Jaded – Kristy Feltenberger – Gillespi

Here is her review.

July, 2014

“Jaded,” a young adult novel, by Kristy Feltenberger takes place in a commune-like enclosure, Nirvana, in rural Virginia. The town is controlled by a group of elitists that have been in control since the late 1860s and although their technology is primitive and they are unscathed by the Outside, their lives are not the paradise that the name of the town implies. The people follow a strict socio-economic class system, not unlike Orwell’s   “1984”, but instead of using animals, people are classed by the color of their eyes.

“Jaded,” revolves around a young girl, Jade, quickly approaching her 17th birthday, at which point she will be forced to make her life choices She has to deal with the death of her beloved grandmother and the developing feelings for her “best friend”, Ty. They embark to find out the secrets they learn after the death of Jade’s grandmother, Rose and the relationship between Nirvana and the Outside. There are just too many secrets to be left buried and Jade and Ty set out to uncover them.

The author, Kristy Feltenberger, begins the book with a list of characters and an explanation of eye-color. At first, I was not sure of the necessity of this list, and then I started reading. Very clever. Ms. Feltenberger embraces her main character’s personality and the many changes and decisions that she has to make. Hard enough for an adult, let alone a teenager. This all speaks to the YA Market and the decisions that they must make as they embark on adulthood. She uses language and that flows well and definitely readable for the age group. The subject matter is enjoyable and appealing. All in all, a good read.

Jaded - Kristy Feltenberger - Gillespi

Jaded – Kristy Feltenberger – Gillespi

Here is Karen’s review.

My Opinion

The book introduces you to Jade, a 16-year-old girl living in Nirvana, Virginia. Her dying grandmother Ruby asks her to secretly get her diary, to read, and then destroy it. Life could not be more complicated as her 17th birthday is approaching, and some things are no longer as they seemed… It is a story of not losing oneself, finding out who to trust, and to survive. I will not tell you more about the story than shown in the Goodreads plot description. This would spoil the fun of reading this book yourself.

With Jaded, Kristy Feltenberger Gillespie has created a compelling story of enduring in a strictly ruled community, solving mysterious incidents, and young love. Jaded is an entertaining, gripping, and fast read, making you want to read more. I was drawn into the story right away. I felt close to Jade and everything that happened. All relevant characters became so real that I ‘related’ to them. Jaded is daunting as strictly ruled communities do exist, consider the Berlin Wall (dividing Berlin in two parts until 1989) or some sects who oppress their members and/or children even today. Jaded is the promising start of the Nirvana trilogy. [Hunted: Nirvana Series 2 and Blinded: Nirvana Series 3 are coming soon.]

This is a book to read again.

Here is Krystol’s review.

“Jaded” by Kristy Feltenberger – Gillespie is a story about a girl who lives in Nirvana. She must decide her life paths and has trouble doing so due to a member of her family passing away. Having some-one’s diary that could change not only thought processes but life’s path, Jade must decide where to go with it as she reaches a  fork  in the road.

I give this book 3.5 out of 5 stars. The author was able to write a unique story which is admirable. However, I had a hard time diving right into the book. It took a great deal before it started to pick up. I love the concept of the book, but I feel the characters and plot could have been developed a little more. This was a fair book to read. I do recommend it to teens because of the message it portrays.

Reflections on the April 2014 A-Z Tour

The 2014 April A to Z Challenge, had over 2000 bloggers taking part this year it was an awesome tour to get involved in. If you’ve not heard about it, nip over to the April AtoZ Challenge website after you’ve read this post.

Firstly I want to thank Arlee Bird for continuing to organise the annual tour. Secondly A REALLY BIG THANK-YOU to all the authors who let me use their books for my challenge, without you and all your support sharing the posts it just wouldn’t be the same.

So how has it all gone? For me it’s all about planning. I began my journey at the end of January, I knew it would takes weeks to gather all the authors and the information I would need for the tour. I contacted friends and fellow authors and I sent out Tweets about my tour offering FREE advertising of work for authors. I even ended up stalking authors and inviting them to take part.

So what did we all get from the tour? Well hopefully readers were introduced to new books and new authors, TBR piles are now groaning under the weight of all the books on readers bookshelves. I’m hoping that the authors got some new sales and I, made some new blogging friends and supporters. At the bottom of this post I’ve highlighted bloggers that I’ve been particularly impressed by with their own tour. If you’ve not visited their blogs yet do take a moment if you can. I’ve been all over the world visiting bloggers taking part in the challenge. Each day I made a point of promoting up to 5 bloggers from the sign up sheet, some days I found they were no longer able to do the challenge, but people seemed to have had great fun. There really are some amazing bloggers out there.

On April 16th, this day in the tour also coincided with the end of a year long challenge which began this time last year. During last years challenge I set about reading a book called “A Year of Doing Good” by Judith O’Reilly. This wonderful lady spent a whole year doing good deeds. I decided to try it for myself. An enormous challenge I began with tiny steps, if I could make it to the end of April, then I would carry on. My deeds may not have been as great as Judith’s but I have made it, I’ve collected my small change, donated money, given books and clothes to charity, I volunteer at a local school, I pick up litter, bake cakes, send gifts and thank-you notes and letters to friends plus I’ve done a whole host of other deeds. AND I’m going to do it all again! YES I’ve decided to carry on, you can follow my challenge on Sunday’s when I blog about my latest weeks.

My own April A-Z tour was set around the theme of books, here are a list of books and authors who featured on this tour.

Romancing September – Kristy Feltenberger Gillespie (Day 13)

Day 13 of Romancing September and today my guest is Kristy Feltenberger Gillespie, after this you can head over to Georgia in just a few hours to catch up with Kristy once more at Stephanie Hurt’s blog. Here Kristy will talk about writing romance in today’s society.

Kristy Feltenburger AuthorSo let’s get straight on and learn more about Kristy’s writing;

1) Where is your home town?
I was born in Johnstown, PA (known for several horrific floods) but I reside in Warrenton, VA now.
2) How long have you been writing romance?
I consider Jaded more a young adult thriller, but there’s definitely a love story there.
3) “Jaded” has been entered on the “Swoon Reads” web site, can you tell us what Swoon reads is all about? Who is behind it? Who can join? and How we can support your work there?
Swoon Reads is an imprint of Feiwel and Friends/Macmillan Publishers. Anyone can submit a young adult novel in the romance genre as well as read, rate, and comment on the ones listed. If you’re interested in reading Jaded, it would be awesome if you could give it a rating (5 stars is the best) mark whether the novel has heat, tears, thrills, laughs, and a quick comment. Follow the link folks and get voting to help Kristy get her book published by Swoon reads, Kristy didn’t tell you but the book with the most votes after a period gets the chance to be published.
4) Please can you remind us the age group your book is aimed at?
My novel is aimed at high school students as well as adults, however, I’m a middle school counsellor and it’s appropriate for mature middle school students as well. I’ve kept it PG.
5) You have chosen an interesting setting for your book, a commune. Have you ever lived in a commune?
No, I’ve never lived in a commune but I have lived in several small towns, which is how I got the idea.
6) There are all sorts of sub divisions in romance what made you choose thriller/ romance?
I had originally placed Jaded in the dystopian genre but was told by several agents to change it to thriller because “dystopian” is dead. I sure hope that isn’t the case because that’s my favorite genre to read.
7) The character Jade, sounds as if she has a lot of growing up to do fast to deal with what she soon discovers, what life lessons can come out of your book?
Jade learns that even the people that love you are capable of lying to you, that ignorance is not bliss, and nothing in her world is as it seems.
8) How does the daughter of the commune leader help Jade, does she cross rules of the commune and put her own relationship with her family at risk?
Peaches, the commune leader’s daughter, and Jade have a symbiotic relationship- they both rely on each other. Peaches does break the commune rules and puts her relationship with her family at risk but she’s done this before she even meets Jade. Peaches has been a rebel the entire time.
9) Are you planning a sequel, one reviewer wrote about several unanswered questions?
Yes, I’m working on a sequel which starts off where Jaded left off. I’m also working on a novella that tells the history of the commune, circa 1860.
10) Do you have a working title for the next book? Will you also be planning to submit it to Swoon reads?
For the title of the sequel, I’m leaning towards Hunted, after Ty’s uncle Hunter, who Jade becomes close to in the sequel. If I finish in time, I’ll definitely submit the next one to Swoon Reads- it’s a great opportunity for writers!
Jaded
Thank you Kristy you’ve opened my eyes to a new publishing opportunity for writers. Swoon Reads Good luck with the new book.
