Jenni has been reading Art Of The Chase by Jennifer Giacalone.

Jennifer Giacaloneā€™s Art of the Chase starts in the middle. In a lot of middles. The middle of a scene, the middle of two lives, the middle of a longstanding rivalry between a pair of investigators and the thief who got away, in the middle of a gambling addictā€™s recovery, the middle of a life being rebuilt after a failed marriageā€¦ thereā€™s so much happening. Some would argue too much, and in the hands of many writers it would be, but Giacalone has a deft touch when it comes to feeding her readers information, and keeping her story propulsive without overwhelming the senses.

Fleur and Renata used to be married, now theyā€™re not. Renata used to not want kids, now she has a teenager calling her ā€œMaā€. Fleur used to hide a gambling addiction, now sheā€™s in recovery and trying so hard. They used to chase art thieves together for Europol, now Renata isnā€™t with the agency, and Fleur is chained to a desk. They almost caught the greatest art thief of the 21st century togetherā€¦ but they didnā€™t, and now heā€™s back and taunting them both, and the entire fine art community. Masterpieces have been stolen, others been forged, and only our two girls can figure out who exactly their thief who got away is.

Fast, flirty, deliciously European (itā€™s not a true crime caper without a trip to Monaco, is it?), Giacalone has taken many of the classic detective story tropes and given them her own spin. After a long run of reading very masculine books, Renata and Fleur were exactly the antidote I needed. Theyā€™re dynamic, sexy, absolutely capable and confident in their abilities, even as they struggle with the foibles that make them human. In a word, theyā€™re real people, and thatā€™s what makes watching them struggle, and ultimately succeed, so, so satisfying.

Book Description:

When a notorious art thief surfaces, warring detective exes reunite for the hunt. A second-chance lesbian romantic suspense that fuses the fine line between love and hate.

Six years ago, the ā€œFabulous Gustaveā€ slipped the grasp of Agent Fleur van Beekhof, making off with a priceless artworkā€¦and Fleurā€™s beautifully ordered life. Suddenly the cool, pragmatic Europol detective lost her detective partner and wife, her rising career, and her control, thanks to the addictive lure of cards.

When a new Italian art theft bears all the markings of Gustaveā€™s taunting style, Fleur is put back in the field, because no one knows him better. She jumps at the chance to correct the mistake that ruined her life. The hitch? She has to work with her fiery ex-wife.

Where Fleur is by the book, Renata skirts the rules, leaps into danger, and looks frustratingly hot while doing it.

As Fleur and Renata chase flamboyant Gustave around Europe, will their case push them back into each otherā€™s arms, or shatter whatā€™s left of Fleurā€™s heart?
