Day 21 April A to Z challenge my theme is characters from books I’ve read plus some audience participation.
Letter U for Uther Pendragon from The Arthurian saga by Mary Stewart.
I read this series when I was a teenager, and it has stayed with me today. One day I’ll go back and read them again. Here is the book description.
Who was Merlin? Was the famed magician of Camelot & King Arthur’s court really a sinister, all-powerful being from another world? Was he truly a Prince of Darkness? Or was he a man with the passions of other mortals? A man with unique intelligence & unusual gifts? Why was he so feared? How did he come by his occult powers? Why was the crystal cave so important to him?
5th century Britain is a country of chaos & division after the Roman withdrawal. Born the bastard son of a Welsh princess who will not reveal to her son his father’s true identity, Myridden Emrys–or as he would later be known, Merlin–leads a perilous childhood, haunted by portents & visions. But destiny has great plans for this no-man’s-son, taking him from prophesying before the High King Vortigern to the crowning of Uther Pendragon & the conception of Arthur–king for once & always.
Find a copy here from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com
For my audience participation I’m asking reader to create book titles using the letter U for the picture below.
A book title and cover picture can often make or break a book sale. Is a book cover eye-catching? Does the book title appeal to the reader?
Have fun creating book titles from my own pictures, you might even think about a genre they could fit.
Leave you answers in the comments below and I’ll choose my favourites.

Oh, nice one – I read The Mists of Avalon years ago, and loved that too! The whole King Arthur thing is endlessly compelling, is it not!
Title: The Ubiquitous Padlock ~ an incredibly boring study of padlocks through the pages. Sorry, I know it’s a bit weak!!!

Arthurian myths are completely fascinating to me. I read the Mists of Avalon (I think twice) some years back and I’m keen to investigate the Mary Stewart ones.

Unbroken Promises – the tale of a small village in the wind and rain swept North East that bids to compete with the Bridge of Locks in Paris where lovers come to add a lock so show their commitment to each other before throwing the key dramatically into the Seine – it doesn’t catch on as chucking the key onto a stony beach where the tide is out most of the time isn’t half as symbolic…
Love stories of Arthurian legend and didn’t know about these so shall have to check them out – thanks!

Thanks Georgia and a wonderful book bio, padlocks in public places seem all the rage this one was found in Iceland and I read about the Paris one on Barb Taub’s post only today.

I read this trilogy when I was a student – funny, I was just talking about it with someone the other day! Seems that fate is conspiring to bring it to my attention again so that I reread it. I loved it at the time, though I find that the passing of the years can sometimes alter my perception of a book (for good or bad).

I do agree re-visiting the past when your reading experiences have now been opened to a huge array of other works isn’t always a good thing. Even writing has changing “fashions” and authors will always be evolving. But then you may find something entirely new from the second reading experience.

My knowledge of Arthurian legend is pretty sketchy – Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin, Morgan le Fey, knights, round table etc. – The Crystal Cave sounds fascinating, beginning at the beginning.

I loved the Crystal Cave. I read it as a teenager, the Mists of Avalon, too. I was at Tintagel last week, taking pictures of Merlin’s Cave 🙂
I’m so uninspired when it comes to titles – Unable to Unlock

Noelle, you’ve chosen the title I was going to give, although my story was a light and frothy romance. I’ll have to think again… 🙂

Until The World Falls Down
The padlocks are a reference to an actual bike lock on a fence in Prague that will literally destroy the world if it is removed.
It’s a romantic thriller.
