Set in the Regency period, The Work of Art is the first book I have read by Mimi Matthews, but it certainly won’t be the last! I love finding a new writer and knowing there are lots of books to catch up on. The Work of Art was such a delight to read. The main characters, Philly and Arthur, jump off the page fully formed; they are not the usual stereotypes, but slightly unconventional and therefore much more interesting to read about.

All alone since the death of her grandfather, Philly is in London to find a husband (or so she thinks). What she doesn’t know is that her Uncle has promised her to the Duke of Moreland, a despicable character, who only wants to add her to his collection of unique objects, due to the unusual colour of her eyes.

What starts out as a marriage of convenience, to save Philly from the clutches of the Duke of Moreland, works out so well because of the foundation of friendship, trust and mutual support between her and Arthur. Their romance blossoms but the author manages to avoid the kind of explicit descriptions that would have made Georgette Heyer blush!

In London, both Philly and Arthur are not in their natural environment – they are both much more at ease in the countryside, horse riding, walking the dogs, away from the superficial restrictions imposed by society.

The ending is a real surprise; I won’t say any more but I don’t think you’ll see it coming.  I am looking forward to reading many more books by Mimi Matthews.

Book description

An Uncommon Beauty…

Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it’s caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland–a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke’s clutches, she’s going to need a little help.

An Unlikely Hero…

Captain Arthur Heywood’s days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress? He has nothing left to offer except his good name.

Can a marriage of convenience save Philly from the vengeful duke? Or will life with Arthur put her–and her heart–in more danger than ever?

If all Regency Romances were written as well as The Work of Art, I would read them all.  Mimi Matthews takes the characters and historical settings and brings them to life in a way that captures the readers attention and sends their minds on a journey of vivid imagery.

Phyllida Satterthwait, Philly for short, finds herself the ward of her distant uncle after the death of her grandfather.  Brought to London to live with him and her two cousins Philly longs for her old life.  Being able to wear her own clothes and spend time outside with her beloved dogs.  Instead she is expected to wear fancy dresses that confine and learn to dance, all with one goal, to secure a husband.  What she doesn’t realize is that her uncle has already made a deal that will see her become the property of a Duke known as The Collector.  The Collector is obsessed withpossessing anything that is a rarity and Philly is indeed a rarity.  She is being called The Work of Art by London society because of her eyes, one is a deep blue and the other amber.  She is introduced to him during a ball and her uncle’s plan begins to unfold.  She learns that she was never intended to be courted by anyone other than the Duke and that she has no say in the offer of marriage.

Once she is made aware of her uncle’s plan and refuses the Duke, she flees London in a marriage of convenience with her new friend Captain Arthur Heywood a man broken by war and determined to not let The Collector have the woman he finds himself falling for.

Once at Arthurs estate they settle in and begin to build a life.  Philly takes charge of the household and servants while Arthur manages the estate.  They come to know each other and admit their love.  Too soon a threat surfaces that could at the very least undo the fabric of their relationship and at the very worst could cost one of them their life.  Will Arthur be able to figure out who wants revenge, will jealousy and scheming old loves find a way to come between them?  Surprising news and a big reveal will keep you guessing until the very end.

Matthews writing and historical descriptions are spot on.  Her scenes are detailed and easily pictured, and I could see this story play out in my mind as I read the words.  She has a true gift for storytelling.  I can’t wait to start reading another of her books.

Phyllida Satterthwaite is presented to us surrounded by a cacophony of misbehaving dogs, all of whom she owns and cares about. Insisting on bringing them to the London home of her uncle Edgar Townsend, she must soon find a husband to provide for her, now she is penniless.  It is apparent that she puts animals before people and she seems unaware of her beauty, only thinking herself odd because of her mismatched eye colours.  But for one person, the Duke of Moreland, she is a work of art, which he wishes to add to his collection.

It might have gone according to Townsend’s plan had it not been for the noble actions of Captain Arthur Heywood, but what use is he, so badly injured from the battle of Albuera that he can hardly walk. Yet Arthur and Philly are drawn together because they don’t fit into the artificial society of Regency London.  Arthur fears a terrible fate will befall Philly and he is prepared to use his wealth, and power to keep her safe.  But can there be a happy ending?  Arthur is damaged, physically and mentally, while Philly is an innocent, gentle girl who longs for independence and a safe place to look after her animals.

As with all Miss Matthews’ novels, it is the conversations between hero and heroine which catch the imagination. As love grows, problems increase. Philly is still in danger and Arthur is not fit enough to protect her.  There are credible misunderstandings and a complex plot but the intimacy of this delightful couple is such a pleasure to read.
