The Misper is a young adult thriller set in the UK. It is the story of Anna, who is fourteen; she has just moved schools to make a fresh start.
A few months ago, the police were asking questions. They repeatedly asked her about the disappearance of a student. But Anna couldn’t tell them the whole story; she felt they were unlikely to believe her.
Anna’s story then turns back six months; another change of school. In need of a new ally, she befriends Zoe, a Goth girl whose energy deters the mean girls. However, Anna is naturally kind and one day when Zoe is absent, she offers friendship to loner Kerry. Thrilled by the attention, Kerry tries desperately to stay friends, but Zoe gets angry and finds it hard to tolerate Kerry’s interference. When Zoe becomes obsessed with the supernatural, Anna can’t shake off a sinister sensation, one which only gets worse as Zoe’s hatred of Kerry increases.
I thought the elements of witchcraft were written with just enough evil to make them creepy and nerve-racking, without crossing the line into horror. This is a story about growing up, relationships, abuse and fixation. Ideal for those looking for a darker story in the YA genre.

‘I knew this girl, you see. A sort of a friend. No one thought she really mattered much, but that turned out to be a mistake. Because she blew a hole through my life – and the lives of everyone I knew.’ Anna’s found the perfect friend in Zoe: she’s cool, she’s smart, she’s goth, she’s gorgeous, If only geeky Kerry would stop hanging around and cramping their style. They’d like to get rid of her. But they should be careful what they wish for…
