Rain (A Stranger in the Woods, #1)Rain by India R. Adams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Rain is a paranormal fantasy, and book #1 of The Stranger In The Woods series. It is set near the town of Brasswood, North Carolina and its surrounding forests.

Rose is nineteen; she’s currently caring for her sick mother and her two younger siblings. A mysterious plague has been sweeping the area. Rose’s father has already died and her mother looks set to follow. All the responsibility is pressing on Rose’s young shoulders, and without the support of best-friend Gunner, Rose doesn’t know how she would survive.

Gunner has always been there for Rose; a gifted woodsmith and crafter, he cares deeply for Rose. He’s prepared to wait forever until Rose sees him as more than just a friend.

Out in the woods males gather: guardians. Ryder is a warrior and protector. Unbeknownst to the humans, his clan have been fighting the sickness in the town, keeping it from spreading further, especially protecting young when they turn twenty years of age. Rose will soon have her birthday and Ryder has been given the duty of protecting her from the Blood Clones.

The danger time is at night when the demon clones hunt. Whilst preparing to guard Rose, Ryder feels peaceful, a sensation he’s not used to. Whilst she sleeps he enters the house, familiarising himself with the layout, the inhabitants and with Rose. Ryder has been trained in stealth; humans don’t know the work his people do while they sleep. But Rose talks to Ryder in her sleep, acknowledging his presence. He is intrigued.

When Rose has her birthday, the clones come in droves, Ryder must fight for her life with his own. The number of clones is unusually high until Ryder and his team are informed that Rose is special, she is linked to a prophecy, of which Ryder is a part.

In the human world, Gunner and Rose take their relationship to a new level, one which tests their friendship with the new feelings it creates. In the woods Ryder’s heart begins to break. Gunner organises a surprise party for Rose, but the clones come and Ryder’s brother guardians are elsewhere, he must do everything to protect Rose, including giving her his venom.

This is a tale for romantic fantasy lovers, it follows popular themes: vulnerable, isolated girl, deep, desperate, passionate love. A prophecy. A love triangle and a whole range of trouble in a fantasy world which lives under the noses of humans in the twilight and beyond. Did it make me think about another popular series with similar haunting themes? Yes. Was it strong enough in differences to stand up for itself? Mostly.

If you are a fan of this style it should be an enjoyable read. If you’re a diehard team Edward or team Jacob fan you’ve got a whole new team of possibilities to choose from here.

Book Description

What if you knew you had just met the other part of your soul—the one who could take away all the pain and loneliness—but no one believes you because the rugged stranger from the woods is nowhere to be found? Would you search for him? Would you be strong enough to believe he exist somewhere out in the darkness where he found you? And if you were to finally find the stranger from the woods and learn he is like no other tale that has ever been told… would you still have the courage to love him?

Rose has no time for romance because her father has passed away from an illness plaguing her small town, and now her mother has also contracted the illness, leaving Rose’s two younger siblings to be her responsibility. But when her best friend forces her to be young for a night and celebrate her twentieth birthday with a bonfire and friends, Rose meets a stranger from the woods, and Rose soon learns he is no stranger at all. In fact, this magical being is trying to keep her… alive.

Two bloods of one will bring down the shadows, to cast, no more…

About the author

India R. Adams

India R. Adams is an author/singer/songwriter who has written YA and NA novels, and the music for the Forever series.

Being a survivor of abuse, has inspired India to let others know they have nothing to be ashamed of. She put her many years of professional theater background to the test and has written fictional stories with a shadow of her personal experiences. She says, “I’m simply finding ways to empower perfect imperfections.”

Another cause India feels needs change, is Sexual Slavery. She has joined forces with jewelers to design beautiful ways to raise money for non-profit organizations.

Even though India writes about serious subjects such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, and Human Trafficking, she has a magnificent sense of humor, as do the characters she creates. Perfectly balanced between laughter and tears, her readers see how to empower their own perfect imperfections.
