“Never leave a devil without puttin’ it in the dirt.”
~ First Law of the Godpistols.

Gunning down the heathen monsters of the untamed West is the calling of the Godpistols, and may be Linthicum Odell’s only path to redemption. A Union Army deserter, Odell figures he has plenty of sin to atone for. As he has yet to earn the Godpistols’ trust, they send Odell on a thankless errand to Gold Vein, a mining town with two afflictions: a corrupt local justice named Lars Richterman, and a horde of cannibal wendigo in the surrounding hills.

Half-dead from a wendigo attack, Odell is nursed back to life by Denton Folger, a righteous press man from the East Coast. Intent on settling debts, Odell takes up Folger’s cause against Richterman and his schemes on the land surrounding Gold Vein. Odell soon realizes that Richterman and the wendigo in the hills are not the only monsters threatening the town. His greatest ally comes in the form of Folger’s ferociously capable wife, Katherina, who holds the secrets to the intrigues of this valley. To save Gold Vein, Odell must pry loose these secrets, though her dark allure may prove too much for Odell’s loyalties… both to his Godpistol dogma and to Folger.

When Odell discovers the truth of what brought him to this valley, and why Katherina keeps this truth buried, will his virtue fail? Or will a bag of silver bullets be enough to survive this war between devils, virtue be damned?

Introduce the main character using only three words. Linthicum Odell; Caring, protective, evolving

Delightful design.

Audience appeal (who would enjoy reading this book?) Readers who like paranormal mysteries, maybe even Western readers.

THE VAMPIRES NEXT DOOR by @ElleKlass #YA #Paranormal #Bookreview

The Vampires Next DoorThe Vampires Next Door by Elle Klass
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

The Vampires Next Door is book #1 in The Bloodseeker Series of YA Paranormal books. It opens with a prologue set in St Augustine, Florida 1823. A young girl is rescued by ghostly apparitions, given a protective amulet and informed she is a Slayer.

Present day, sixteen year old Alison is home alone in her apartment she shares with her Mom. Neighbours are having a loud party and she reports their unsocial behaviour. Nearby, Rodham has disturbing visions of Vampires and can zone in his telepathic abilities to communicate with Alison.

A quick friendship forms between Rodham and Alison and they agree the neighbours show all the signs of being Vampires, Alison, an avid bookworm knows all about such creatures from her vast reading experience. Concerned about missing policemen, they sneak into the neighbour’s flat looking for bodies, but discover a strange glowing amulet which speaks to Rodham.

An old book which came with the amulet informs them about Slayers and Bloodseekers and they find themselves in a real life paranormal world. Alison’s Gran arrives for a visit, but soon reveals she too is a Slayer. Bloodseekers, once crushed are again becoming strong and seven magical Slayers must join to defeat them once more.

A quick, light, easy read, I felt this book was let down by poor editing, including using dialogue for info dumping, over use of adjectives and places where I felt the plot jumped and I was left flailing trying to work out where people or events had come from.

BARKING MADNESS by Ryan Hill #YA #Paranormal #Thriller #Bookreview

Barking MadnessBarking Madness by Ryan Hill
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Barking Madness is a YA Paranormal Thriller and is the debut novel written when the author himself was in high-school. It opens with a dream scene and a dark woodland chase. We then meet the lead female character Rosetta Harper, a seventeen year old teenager full of attitude and selfishness as she embarks on life in a new school.

The setting is a small town of Ashwood, home to Michael and his high-school friends. Michael’s been working all summer and struggles under the constant criticism from his father. Not part of the “In-Crowd” they still joke around, party and talk about girls, but they don’t get invited to THE monthly parties held by Brad. Brad’s parties are renown for drink, drugs, sex and out of control behaviour and it is at her first Brad party that Rose, as she prefers to be called, witnesses a violent death, herself attacked and saved in the woods by Michael.

Rumours of a madman or a Wolf abound, but nothing stops Brad from holding a second party a month later. Rose mixes her drink and drugs and goes willingly to a bedroom with Zach, but something happens and when she awakes in the morning, naked and covered in blood, she’s shocked to hear of a second death.

Plunged into a nightmare of paranormal beings, horrific dreams and a curse Rose struggles to cope. Will she allow Michael to become her friend and help her or does she fear letting anyone else get close?

This is a dialogue led book which has chapters of alternate point of view from Rose and Michael. At times the large chunks of dialogue slow the pace of the book and overshadow the thriller theme of the storyline. The author intended the teenage characters to be a realistic reflection of his peers and he has deliberately made many of them unlikeable which is a risky move as their is little empathy to be had between reader and characters. There are some good ideas and pieces of writing within the text but they are lost under a blanket of cloggy dialogue. Although labelled as YA, this book is less suitable for youngers readers in this age bracket due to its content.

DEADBEAT DAD by @jr_rain & Rod Kierkegaard #Paranormal #Bookreview

Deadbeat DadDeadbeat Dad by J.R. Rain
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Deadbeat Dad is the second book in this paranormal series and I recommend reading the first book before you start this to really appreciate the storyline. Detective Sergeant Richelle Dadd is undead, stuck between the realms of the living and the dead. Deliberately created this way by an ex-boyfriend Val Tabori, who brought her back from the dead to father a Moroi child, a half human, half zombie boy.

However Richelle recently gave birth to a girl which she named Tamara. In this book, Richelle is given a dead end job in filing, researching cold cases. Here she is approached by a ghost, Sophie Grey, who was murdered on Cemetery Hill in 1931. Research shows that Sophie was one of the triple Black Rose murder case.

At home Richelle’s life is complex, she has Dicky Dadd her gypsy father staying with her, her ex-police partner Mal moves in and she has a house full of visiting ghosts from Shadytown. Plus her mother tries to link Richelle up with a long lost Russian cousin.

This is a fast paced book with several minor storylines all adding to the tensions, which come to a head when more than one person wants baby Tamara. The ending has the potential to lead to more books in this series.

SOULLESS by @sarahjpepper #Paranormal #Romance #BookReview #TuesdayBookBlog

Soulless (Once Wicked, #1)Soulless by Sarah J. Pepper
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Soulless is book #1 in the Once Wicked series of paranormal romances. This book is set in Las Vegas.

Declan Stilts is a 348 Year old Demon, among the human he is a millionaire playboy with anger issues. Amongst the paranormal world he is a psychopath with life threatening rages and an ability to such the essence out of his victims.

The book opens with a ghastly scene in a suite at the Bellagio hotel. Two dead and a third dying, Declan holds the women he loves in his arms, watching her die, her last whispered words see him stabbing her in the heart with an ancient knife. Laced with the Incubus Curse Declan rescues Piper from one dreadful life and plunges her into another.

Now an Immortal demon, Piper hungers for the essence created by envy from humans, she can literally suck the life from a victim, aging them beyond their years, if not killing them. She struggles between her delight at the chance to spend all eternity with Declan and her horror and guilt about what she can inflict on humans.

An old adversary of Declan’s returns, a witch called Gepetta. Declan hides Piper amongst the lower Saxony coven of witches while he tries to cover-up recent events, but danger is close and he hasn’t considered Piper’s human feelings might hamper their future together.

Sarah Pepper writes dark, twisted paranormal romance with fairy tale elements meant to chill. This is a good start to a new series, and I expect several of the minor storylines will play out in the next books.

GIFTS OF THE BLOOD by @vickikeire #YA #Paranormal Angel’s Edge Series #Bookreview @CuriosityQuills

Gifts of the Blood (Angel's Edge, #1)Gifts of the Blood by Vicki Keire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gifts of the Blood is book #1 of the Angel’s Edge series. It is a #YA paranormal fantasy. Caspia is 18, a freshman at Andreas Academy of Fine Arts, she works in a local coffee shop and she cares for her brother who has terminal cancer. Caspia is also gifted with the ability to draw the future into her art, this rare gift is part of her family bloodline and one which is drawing unwanted attention.

When she meets a dark mystery man, one she has just drawn into a picture with shades of light and dark, bloody fingers and one rolling with anger, she fears for her life, but Ethan is there to protect and soon it becomes apparent that most of the good folks of Whitfield are not as she had first thought. From Mr Markov her blind employer to Mrs Alice the craft shop owner, there is more than first meets the eye.

As the story unfolds we find out more about Ethan and his fellow fallen Angels and just how far they will go to protect the ones they love. This is a safe and popular storyline for this genre. For me I felt that Ethan made life changing decisions a little too easily and another character Asheroth switched from bad guy to good guy with no real explanation. I would have liked more of the twins from the coffee shop and what happened to the threatening college art lecturer? If these characters are to reveal more in the next book in the series I wanted more hooks to keep me interested about their future.

Please Release Me by @RhodaBaxter @ChocLituk #Bookreview #wwwblogs

Please Release Me (Choc Lit)Please Release Me by Rhoda Baxter
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Please Release Me is a contemporary romance with a paranormal element from ChocLit author Rhoda Baxter. The book opens at the wedding scene of Peter and Sally which turns to a tragedy in the blink of an eye.

Ten months later and Peter visits Sally everyday, she’s in a coma. Another daily visitor to the hospice is Grace. She’s lost both her parents and now visits a close friend of her mother. Grace is lonely and alone and fears making a new start.

Peter is consumed with guilt, existing day to day, fearing a life without Sally and fearing a life with Sally should she recover. Peter and Grace find comfort in each other.

In her hospital bed, Sally can hear the voices, but she can’t communicate until one stormy night an electrical fault grants her wish. She latches onto Grace, who seems to be the only one who can help her. They form a friendship which has highs and lows and go on a journey of discovery for more than one person.

This book has a slow start and I didn’t connect to the characters until the night of the storm, when for me the book took off in an entertaining angle. The relationship between Grace and Sally worked well and was a delight to read.

Threads Of Yesterday by Sam Cheever @samcheever #Paranormal #Mystery

Threads of YesterdayThreads of Yesterday by Sam Cheever
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Threads of Yesterday is book two in the Yesterday’s Paranormal series. Yesterday’s is an antique shop in Crocker, Indiana and is owned by Anna. This is such a fun series, each book has a glossary at the beginning full of words from yester-year which are spoken by the two resident ghosts of Anna’s business. Joss and Bess are linked to the shop from America’s past and help solve local mysteries.

In 1859 Lissie Nelson travelled to Crocker to be with her new husband, but Lissie disappeared once the stagecoach reached the town along with her family jewels. When Ellie Nelson visits Anna’s shop she warns Anna that she is in danger.

In Crocker everyone is preparing for the Apple Blossom Festival, the local museum is donating a painting and has also sold some vintage dresses to Anna. But suddenly everyone has an interest in the dresses, but when the museum curator is attacked things become very series.

I loved the ghostly characters and the descriptions of different types of ghosts, looking forward to the next book in the series.

Seeress – Runes series book #4 by @ednahwalters #YA #Bookreview

Seeress (Runes, #3)Seeress by Ednah Walters
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Seeress is Book#4 of the Runes series of this #YA paranormal set of books which feature Norse Mythology.

Raine Cooper has been given Immortal Runes and on top of this it has been discovered that she is a rare Völur or Seeress. But others want a part of Raine. The Norns want her on their side in the final great Norse battle of Ragnarök, but they keep trying to interfere with Raine’s fate and they are untrustworthy.

News of Raine’s ability has spread and witches are flooding to the town where Raine lives. Her visions show of an evil one who is after Raine and the Valkyrie increase Raine’s protection and her lessons in self protection.

Raine’s Valkyrie boyfriend Torin will stop at nothing to find the evil that chases her, but it’s Raine who finally reveals truths about his past which have haunted him for Centuries and which now need laying to rest.

An enjoyable new lead in this series, the e-book I purchased had quite a few typos which really needed to be ironed out before publication. One error even had a character named completely wrong.

Runes by @ednahwalters #YA #Paranormal #Bookreview

Runes (Runes, #1)Runes by Ednah Walters
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Runes is book 1 in a YA paranormal series which revolves around Norse Mythology. I chose to read this book from the #FridayFiveChallenge and have really enjoyed the mythology storyline.

Lorraine Cooper, or Raine to her friends is sweet sixteen and never been kissed. Eirik Seville has been her unofficial boyfriend forever, but they’ve never taken the next step. All this changes when Raine turns seventeen. Drop-dead gorgeous Torin St James is Raine’s new neighbour who knows far too much about Raine and seems to have magical powers of speed and healing.

At school three new exchange students from Norway arrive, they have strange tattoos and Raine is targeted by them. Soon Raine is seeing runes around her, on her car, at school and they glow on Torin when his emotions are raised.

Torin’s presence pushes Eirik’s feelings for Raine into the open and they share their first kiss, but it’s not Eirik whom Raine thinks about first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Intrigued by Torin, Raine seeks answers, but he is bound by a higher authority and cannot reveal the truth.

This was a great way to introduce readers to a new series, with new twists on a popular theme in this genre. I look forward to reading book 2.
