Mystery Book Tour Day 25 #MysteryNovember No Strings Attached by Lily Bishop

November Mystery Tour

Welcome to Day 25 of the November Mystery Book Tour, today our guest is Lily Bishop with her romantic mystery No Strings Attached.

18304081

Where is your home town?

I grew up in Maysville, Georgia, a small town of about a thousand people. Maysville is located an hour Northeast of Atlanta, Georgia.

How long have you been writing?

I have been writing since I can remember stringing sentences together. I received my first typewriter in middle school and my first word processor in my sophomore year of college, way back in 1987. I haven’t looked back. I published No Strings Attached in 2013, and I think I started that one in 2009.

What is your favourite sub-genre of mystery?

I love romantic suspense.

Where is No Strings Attached set?

No Strings begins in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the characters spend time in Miami, Atlanta, and a private island in the Bahamas.

Tell us about Laura.

Laura Todd is an administrative assistant who has been going to night school to obtain a graduate degree in marketing. Unfortunately, marketing jobs are hard to come by, and she hasn’t been able to find a job in her field. Her boss has promised to promote her to a consulting position, but he dangles it just out of reach.

How does she meet Fox?

She gets the opportunity to travel to Las Vegas to a conference and she meets him in the casino.

Tell us about Laura’s sister’s talent and where it leads.

Laura’s sister Lindsey is a mathematical genius and she has certain methods that she uses to win at blackjack. Laura is trying out Lindsey’s techniques when she meets Fox at the blackjack table.

Which tropical location does the mystery take them all to?

They all travel to Calliope, a private island in the Bahamas. I created the island as a ritzy resort fashioned after a castle. Think Atlantis, but more remote and elite.

Tell us about the second book in the series.

The second book is titled Under His Protection and it focuses on Fox’s brother Lee, who we meet in the first book. Lee has been out of the Marines for a few years, and he wants to start his own security company. In the second book, he has started a company called Security Solutions, and he receives a contract to protect the daughter of a state senator. Elizabeth Crowne has received multiple death threats, as she is preparing to declare her candidacy for attorney general for the state of Georgia.

Under His Protection by Lily Bishop

Under His ProtectionUnder His Protection by Lily Bishop

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book picks up a character from Lily’s first book in the series “No Strings Attached” and this is Lee’s story. Lee Thornton aged 33, is an ex-marine who has set up his own security firm. He lands a job for Senator Martin Crowne, who wants security for his daughter.

Elizabeth Crowne is an attorney who wants to run for State Attorney General, the top legal office in the state where she can help fight cases especially those of abused women. But someone has been sending her threatening anonymous letters. She tries hard to resist the need for 24 hour security protection, but after a house break-in, the danger is closing in.

There are several people who could be the ones threatening Elizabeth, top of her list is ex-fiancé James Simpson, plus it could always be linked to the case she is working on. Lloyd Baker is currently in prison for money-laundering, but he’s willing to do a deal with the FBI for a bigger fish.

The danger levels ramp up and Lee persuades Elizabeth to come to the Bahamas with him for his brother’s wedding, away from the media and where he can protect her. But they still can’t find out who wants Elizabeth out of the way, until it’s nearly too late.

This is a romantic mystery, it was good to catch up with the characters from the first book. It was a while a go that I read about them and I did need reminding who they were. The next book promises the development of another character for whom there will also be a mystery to solve.

Find your own copy here from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com

Whoop, Whoop! This week we step across to 2014, what a wonderful year this is going to be. My year long challenge doesn’t stop here because I began on 16th April, the day I began reading Judith’s book. Judith will be our guest today  (Sunday 5th January) in a second post, I’m so excited that she agreed to give up a piece of her valuable time to talk to us on the blog.

So what have I been up to this week?

December 29th – Cooked a lovely roast dinner for my parents as we didn’t see them on Christmas Day. The January issue of Fleet Life was delivered this morning, so I was able to write a second post today and let authors know about their books. This months books were “No Strings Attached” by Lily Bishop, “The Initiate” by Sue Vincent and Stuart France, “Ghost in the Machine” by Ed James, “Passion United” by Phillip Miles and “Summer’s Passing” by Randy Mixter. You can check out my post here http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-4mz or go to the online version at www.fleetlife.org.uk, click on the online directory and find Rosie’s Good Reads on page 48.

Good Deeds received; Mum really appreciated not cooking or doing the washing up and it was lovely to spend some relaxing time with them.

December 30th – We have a friend of my son over today, the boys have some school work to complete together and I’m providing lunch. Launched my Rosie’s Good Read Collections – Historical books today. Good Deeds received; Had some lovely comments and support for my post today, thanks folks it makes it all worthwhile. Here is a link to the post http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-39v

December 31st – At work today I spent extra time doing a job today which makes out lives easier and one that I could have left, but didn’t. Came home and visited lots of my wonderful friends on WordPress. It’s so busy that my like buttons haven’t been loading on people’s sites, so I shall endeavour to go back later to support you all. My yearly WordPress stats were a delight to read and I’ve sent off some personal thanks to followers and contributors to my site who have helped make my year such a success. Special mention to Stephanie Hurt , Harula at Words That Serve and Marin Thomas plus all my guest and fellow authors and writers who have given their precious time and words to my blog.

Good deeds received; The postman delivered a copy of “Please Call Me Derek” by Mac Black which I can’t wait to start reading, and author Julia Hughes offered me a copy of her recently published book “The Griffin’s Boy.” These should start my next year of reading off to a flying start. In 2013 I read 154 books in my Goodreads challenge.

January 1st – HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all, and it’s off to a flying start. 3 people contacted me today asking for book reviews. I have finished reading my first book of 2014 and have just sent the review off to the author before I post on Goodreads and Amazon. I have set my Goodreads book challenge at 120 books at the moment, if I’m near to smashing it before the end of the year then I’ll increase the target. Good Deeds received: Have had lots of lovely comments and support from fellow bloggers and readers of my New Year post. If you missed it here is the link. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-4mZ

January 2nd – Started off with a Good Deed Received; Author Julia Hughes who recently sent me her latest book to read, this morning sent me another book on behalf of  Sean and Daniel Campbell. The best bit was that she reminded me about a great website for authors and writers called Words Unlimited where they have book promotions and author posts, they get about 600 views per day so why not check them out, please mention my name if you do decide to make contact with them, thanks.

Good Deeds; Have finished my second book already this year and posted my review on Goodreads and Amazon. A Haunting tale from Randy Mixter called “A Girl of the Paper Sky

January 3rd – Strong winds and driving rain have been bending our neighbour’s tree over the fence until it hits our roof, so today we helped out our neighbour who has been too ill to tackle the tree. With her permission we cut back the tree finding a split in its lower trunk which could have meant it toppled over in the next windy storm. It was sad to cut the tree, but it was becoming too big for it’s small patch and a danger to our house. Good Deeds received;  My brother-in-law took the tree away at no cost to anyone.

January 4th – I have finished my third book of the year and written a review for author Mac Black of his book “Please Call me Derek”. This will appear on the blog later in January and Mac has agreed to be a guest author as well. We’re working on the interview at the moment. That’s all for this week, don’t forget to check out Judith’s guest post.

She definitely thinks Casey Carter is sexy, but not handling her own age well, Alexa just can’t get passed their twelve year age difference to even consider a fling. 18304081Was it his gaze from across the blackjack table? The little nick on his chin that she wanted to kiss and make better? The way his bright blue eyes seemed to see to the heart of her? Whatever it was, Laura Todd was pulled in by Fox Thornton. A whirlwind Las Vegas romance followed, but things heat up again in Miami, in all the wrong ways. Embezzlement, ambition, and erotic romance aren’t the perfect match, but that’s all they have. Will it be enough? Goodreads, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.com, My review: http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-3j0

Guest Author Lily Bishop

Today our guest is Lily Bishop author of yesterday’s book review “No Strings Attached” check out the review here; http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-3j0

LilyBishop

Let’s find out more about Lily and her writing;

1) Where is your home town?

I grew up in Northeast Georgia (USA) in a small town with a population of around 600 at the time I lived there. Since then, I think it’s ballooned to 900. The town is near Athens, which is a college town, and about an hour northeast of Atlanta.

2) How long have you been writing?

I wrote soap opera vignettes for my classmates as early as elementary school, and remember telling everyone when I was in seventh grade that I would grow up to be an author. I wrote my first novel in high school, my second in college, and my third after I got married, before the kids came along. No Strings Attached is the first that I have chosen to publish.

3) Have you always written romance?

I cut my teeth on Harlequin and Silhouette back in the 80’s, when alpha males were truly alpha males. I re-read some of those now, and my first thought is what a jerk!!  Of the books I mentioned above, the third was women’s fiction. Mostly I stick with romance, but I toy with the idea of a straight mystery or suspense, without any bedroom scenes.

4) In “No Strings Attached” Laura and Fox meet at a conference in Las  Vegas, can you briefly tell the readers why they are both there?

Fox and Laura are both attending a conference for a hotel association. Fox is a long-time member as a consultant, and Laura also works for a hotel consulting company. She has been promised a promotion from administrative assistant job to a consultant position, and she is doing a presentation at the conference. However, early we learn that her promotion has been delayed, and may not happen at all.

5) When Fox first meets Laura it is at the Black Jack gambling tables.  What is the system that Laura is using to win money? It sounds tempting, would it really work?
Laura is using a modified card counting strategy that I purposefully kept vague. Her sister is a math wiz who developed the strategy, but Laura keeps screwing it up because she is so distracted by the hunky guy at her table. Her sister wins more than Laura does with the strategy.
6) Your book includes private jets, a yacht and luxury living, do you think it’s a winning formula for the romance genre?

I have mixed emotions about the whole “billionaire” trend in romances. Originally I was targeting this book for a “millionaire” line for a publisher, but that didn’t work out. It was fun researching some of the high-roller suites in Las Vegas for people who stay in suites larger than my house. We’ll learn later in the series that the money isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but for now, it is what it is. I think the whole trend towards wealthy main characters plays into the fantasy-aspect of romance.

7) I loved Fox’s Mum Bonnie, will we be seeing more of her in the next book?

Yes, Bonnie will be making an appearance. Most of the main characters will be back, and we will see Fox and Laura’s wedding. We’ll spend time in Atlanta and return to the Bahamas, which figures prominently in the first book. Bonnie loves Laura, but she may not be as supportive of Lee’s budding romance. We’ll have to see.

8) What made you decide to self publish?

I developed this book originally for an e-book publisher, but they requested a revision. In my opinion, their revision request was vague, and I wasn’t sure what to do at that point. It took me a year to re-write it, but at that point I had decided I was re-writing it for me. The terms of their contract included no advance and a very small royalty percentage, and I decided I could do better on my own. I also knew that if they requested another revision I couldn’t go through with it. So I hired a free-lance editor and cover designer and away I went. Writing was my dream, and when I turned 44, I decided I would be published before I turned 45, one way or another. I released this book three months before I turned 45 and I haven’t looked back.

9) I for one can’t wait to read the next books in the series, do you have titles for them yet?

I struggle with titles. My second book is Lee’s story, and we learn more about Lee’s desire to start his own security company. He becomes a bodyguard for a politician, and it’s called Under His Protection – Book 2 in the City Lights Series. Book 3 right now is about Lindsey, and I’m not sure of the title yet. Lindsey is young and finishing her Master’s in the second book, and she doesn’t always do exactly what her sister wants. The third book may be No Stone Unturned, although I’m not committed to that yet. Sometimes the title comes when I get the cover in place. Originally I wanted all the books to start with “No”, but that didn’t work. I decided to tie the series together using the lights that are in the background of the first cover, and naming the series “City Lights”. I’ll use that same background for all three covers.

10)  Which one will you release first? Do you have an expected publication date for the clamouring fans?

I talked to my editor and plan to start sending her chapters of Under His Protection next week, so I am hoping for an early January release. Fingers crossed!! Revising and editing always takes longer than it should. I have a draft cover already, and it’s very exciting! Under His Protection is a bit more suspenseful/darker than the first, and the third may be even darker yet. My biggest concerns is that people will read them out of order. Although the stories stand alone, if you read the second you will know who the bad guy was in the first, and if the third comes together like I believe it will, there will be even more reveals that may spoil elements of the first two.

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book is a great romance that ticks all the boxes for me. There is a hunky hero (Fox) and the sizzle of sexual tension begins straight away. Laura is intelligent and a good character struggling to keep down a job to pay the bills and send her sister to college. Laura wants a bit of fun and feels she deserves the attentions of an attractive man for a while. However work soon gets in the way for both of them and Fox must investigate the company that Laura works for. Sent to find the reason why the company is losing money the finger points to Laura when lies are easier than the truth. This is a well written book, I could easily picture the luxurious settings and the pace of the writing fits the storyline. The author promises to tell us more about Fox’s brother Lee and Laura’s sister in second and third books, which will hopefully be available soon, I shall look forward to them. This review is based upon a free copy of the book given to me by the author.
