Dead HopeDead Hope by Nicky Wells
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Dead Hope is a romantic suspense/ thriller. Thirty one year old Cat Hope, spoilt socialite daughter of rock star legends, finds herself in front of a judge when caught in possession of class A drugs. She’s been in and out of rehab for years, so when the judge enforces a sentence which entails her getting a proper job, supporting herself and doing five hundred hours of community service rather than the expected prison sentence, Cat is rather shocked.

Sent immediately from the hearing to a small northern town with a new identity, Cat finds herself living her life as Annabelle Smith. With no educational qualifications the only job she can find is a lowly job in a digitisation company. Fellow worker Kay takes pity on her and helps her get settled, she intrigues him, it is obvious to him that she’s running away from something. Not that he can judge, his own background isn’t very rosy.

Kay helps Annabelle after a heroic day at the office and a stiff drink for the shock turns into a deeper conversation about the past. Annabelle tells Kay about her parents and together they decide to find out more about an event which happened more than twenty years ago and which has been haunting lives ever since. However soon their search triggers red flags amongst others who have been keeping secrets and as events unfold, Cat is exposed to danger and Kay will do anything to rescue her.

An easy read, slight twist on a rags to riches storyline. A well paced suspense probably more for romance readers looking to spread their reading wings a little wider than those into deep dark thrillers. The rock theme which this author is known for is thread throughout the storyline. Enjoyable read.

About Nicky Wells: Love & Thrills

Nicky Wells writes captivating romance and breathtaking thrillers featuring famous (or infamous!) feisty heroes and extraordinary villains. DEAD HOPE is her eighth book and the first published novel in her “Wake Up Dead” themed thriller series, with the next two books scheduled for release through the course of 2017 and 2018. Nicky has previously published seven works of romantic fiction both with US publishing house, Sapphire Star Publishing, and independently.

Born in Germany, Nicky moved to the United Kingdom in 1993 and currently lives in Lincoln with her husband and their two boys. She loves listening to rock music, dancing, and eating lobsters. When she’s not writing, she’s hopelessly addicted to reading crime novels by the truck load.

Question: You’ve been a bit quiet this past year or so. What’s been happening? Where have you been?

Nicky: After the release of my last novel, the romantic comedy “Seven Years Bad Sex,” I decided to take a little breather and to allow myself some time to think about where I was going to go next, writing-wise. I took a whole six months off, and I spent that time with family and decorating a part of our house. Wouldn’t you know it, six months flew by, and I found myself brimming with ideas for not one but several books, and I got busy writing and planning and writing again.

Question: Tell us about DEAD HOPE. How did you come up with the idea?

Nicky: DEAD HOPE was born with the working title of “Deep Cover”. When the idea came to me, I was still planning to write a romance featuring rock stars, and the key nugget is: what would happen if you transplanted a world-famous rock star into an office job like you and me might hold down? Moreover, what would happen if you removed that rock star from their natural habitat, the glittering metropolis, and placed them into a sleepy rural town? Romantic and comedy ideas flowed galore.

Question: So, DEAD HOPE was going to be a romantic comedy?

Nicky: A romantic comedy-slash-suspense, yes. That was the plan.

Question: How did you get from romantic comedy-slash-suspense to thriller? That’s quite a leap.

Nicky: It might look that way, but it was actually a gradual progression. I’m an OCD planner. I can’t write if I haven’t got the book planned out in minute detail, so I sat down and started weaving all my wonderful ideas together. But there was one central question I couldn’t answer: Why. Why would this whole thing happen? What would bring the rock star to the office job in the middle of nowhere?

Question: And?

Nicky: I did a spider map of all the possible scenarios that could have got the rock star into his unusual circumstances, and I got a bit carried away. I allowed myself to really think out of the box, and suddenly one scenario jumped out at me that turned the plot entirely on its head. Funny how a small idea can prompt a cataclysmic change! My hero turned into a heroine, and while she’s the daughter of a famous rock star couple, she isn’t a celebrity in her own right. But at that point, the romance theme was still dominant.

Question: What happened next?

Nicky: I finished planning and started writing. And as soon as I started writing, the thriller and crime ideas just took off. This baby wanted to be something completely different from what I had envisaged, so I had to abandon writing and re-plan. I went deep on the logistics of my core crime, my mystery, and I learned quite a bit about court and police procedures and forensics, more so than is evident in the story but lots of stuff that’ll come in handy in my next stories. In this way, DEAD HOPE turned from a romantic suspense into a crime thriller with a strong romance subplot.

Question: But there is still some romance?

Nicky: There is still some romance. J

Question: What about blood and gore?

Nicky: That, not so much. I don’t like blood and gore and while there is some—it is a crime story, after all—the novel is all about solving the mystery. I guess I’m trying to follow in the tradition of Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton, not that I could ever hope to aspire to match their genius.

Question: Go on then, sell it to me. What’s DEAD HOPE all about?

Nicky: All right… here goes the elevator pitch!

A unique and delicious cocktail of crime, suspense and romance, “DEAD HOPE” is a compulsive page turner.

Cat Hope doesn’t want to go to prison. Kay Mahon is on the run from a past life that he’d rather not remember. When their paths cross, they begin to investigate the truth behind the deaths of Cat’s parents, the successful rock star couple Jackie and Adam Hope. Little do they know that their quest is putting Cat in grave danger…

#RomancingSeptember Day 14 7 Years Bad Sex by @WellsNicky #Romance #books

Welcome to Day 14 of #RomancingSeptember

2015 cover

Our guest today is Nicky Wells with her book 7 Years Bad Sex

Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells

Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells

Where is your home town?

I currently live in Lincoln in the UK. Technically, my home town is Essen in Germany.

How long have you been writing romance?

I started writing ‘in earnest’ in 2004, while I was pregnant with my first child.

What is your favourite sub-genre of romance?

Don’t have one—I’m a complete sucker for romance and will read everything, from chick lit to historical to paranormal. Although I do love my rock star heroes…. *winks*

Where is your book set?

Like most of my books, 7 Years Bad Sex sees my characters travel a fair bit. They start out in St Tropez in France before returning to their main base in London. They also go to Brighton and Cornwall, and eventually conclude their story in Paris…

What gave you the idea for this book?

A dinner party, of all things! I was at an awards dinner for romance authors, and I found myself at a very merry table indeed. Evidently we toasted all the nominees and winners, and somewhere along the line, my seating partner to the left informed me that I was bound to suffer seven years bad sex on account of not having looked him in the eye while toasting. Obviously I laughed: I’m not superstitious! Plus I’d never heard of this particular superstition, but I was intrigued. And while he was telling me more about it, the story popped in my head. What if… you took a couple on their honeymoon and have them commit this toasting mishap? How would they cope? What would they do? The opportunity for endless mishaps and comedy moments seemed endless, but also included some deeper reflections. Just how important is the physical side of a relationship?

And thus 7 Years Bad Sex was conceived.

Introduce us to the characters.

Meet Alex and Casey, first of all—the two characters who tell the story. In her mid-twenties, Casey has long luscious coppery hair and emerald green eyes that hold a never-ending fascination for Alex. She is the main vocalist for rock band Blue Heart, and she wrestled her way into the band (and Alex’s heart) one night when she climbed on stage and booted the hapless previous vocalist off stage. She loves pizza and anything cooked in garlic and chilli. Oh, and she’s very partial indeed to a bottle of Pinot Grigio.

Alex is a little older than Casey. He is the main brain behind Blue Heart, and he’s also their drummer. He is tall, stocky, good looking in a broody kind of way with blue eyes and long, dark, curly hair. He is happy to play the part of the tough rocker, but actually he’s a real softie. He oozes confidence, but this predicament that has befallen Casey and him is eating away at his substance. How is it possible that a man in his prime cannot finish the job?

Is there an event or incident which begins the run of bad luck?

There certainly is. Read it right here:

“Casey didn’t reply. She was too busy making sense of the surprise in the sky.

Congratulations Casey and Alex, the plane’s banner proclaimed with bold red lettering on a white background. Casey’s heart thumped with excitement as the pilot launched into a loop-the-loop, then turned on his smoke trail and created a perfect love heart against the bright blue canvas of the cloudless sky.

Casey took another sip of her champagne. ‘Oh wow,’ she whispered. ‘This is so beautiful.’

‘Isn’t it just?’ Alex concurred. ‘I’ve never seen anything like it.’

‘Me neither. Sasha must have organised it. We must thank her properly later.’

Casey snuggled into her husband’s embrace as deeply as was possible whilst they were both sitting on separate chairs, and her eyes remained trained on the sky. She sensed more than she saw that Alex was taking a drink from his glass, and she leaned her head against his shoulder.

‘To us,’ she whispered.

‘To us,’ he replied.

For the briefest moment, the earth seemed to shake, and there was a deep, growling sound like thunder from within the sea. Casey grabbed on tight to Alex. She shook her head as if to clear a sudden fog.”

Tell us some of the ways the couple try to deal with it.

Where to start? First up, they go into denial and pretend that they don’t have a problem at all. That strategy fails spectacularly. So after that, they try just about everything: food with aphrodisiac properties that has devastating effects on Alex’s digestive system; kinky clothes that bring out Casey in a totally unsexy all-over body rash; sex toys that have them laughing so hard, they end up playing bowling with them; and eventually, sex therapy. Hold on! Don’t run away! That’s not what it sounds! Trust me… and read the book to find out what sex therapy is truly all about. *Nicky winks*

Tell us what you are working on at the moment.

Painting my house! LOL, not my house, exactly, but most of the rooms in it. After four years and seven novels, I am taking a small breather. I have three books vying for attention in my head—all romance, some involving rock stars, others more on the paranormal side of the spectrum—and I need a moment to figure out where I’m going to go next. I have a feeling I’m going to end up writing all three of them before I can make a decision about where I’m going to head next…

Where can readers find out more about you?

7 Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells @WellsNicky #Chicklit

7 Years Bad Sex7 Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

7 Years Bad Sex is a light chick lit read best suited for the younger market of reader in their 20’s and 30’s. It’s a fun read surrounding the wedding and subsequent months of honeymoon era surrounding newly weds.

Casey and Alex are members of Rock group Blue Heart and we meet them on a Yacht in the Mediterranean toasting their marriage day, when they feel the earth literally moving, believing it’s just them who felt it they look forward to their wedding night only to be extremely turned-off by each other and unable to cement their wedding vows.

They have a 3 week honeymoon cruise around the Med booked but it becomes more apparent that it wasn’t just wedding night nerves when Alex can’t perform his bedroom duties and Casey is left feeling frustrated. It’s not just Alex, bad luck seems to be following them ever time they dry to make love. Back home in familiar surroundings they think everything will sort itself out but that’s not the case.

They end up trying everything from lotions, potions, sex toys, counselling and even a sex therapist but it looks like they are under a curse. Even Psychic Sam can’t help them. Can they really face 7 years without sex? or should they make drastic decisions?

This is a brave subject to make the central theme to your book and I enjoyed it more when the storyline moved to Brighton and Cornwall giving the reader a little extra to the story other than Casey and Alex’s obsession with sex.

Years Bad Sex by Nicky Wells

7 Years Bad Sex

One wedding. One curse? Disaster ever after…

A seven-years-bad-sex curse? Surely not! Yet something went wrong when rock singer Casey and drummer Alex got married on that beautiful yacht anchored off St Tropez in the south of France. Something went badly wrong. For even on their wedding night, the young couple discovers a complete and somewhat surprising inability to make love. Muddling through their honeymoon with a string of thin excuses for their predicament, the lovers defer finding a solution (and panicking) until the return to their home in London. After all, they married for life and to make rock music, not for the love of sex. Right?

But when they resume life as normal in London, all hell breaks loose. Increasingly frantic in their quest for release, the unhappy newlyweds embark on a string of hilarious and occasionally harmful antics that drives them, their band, and an assortment of random strangers to the brink of despair. But it ain’t over ‘til it’s over or, in this case… it ain’t over ‘til the newlyweds sing.

Spirits of Christmas
A perfect seasonal read – a novella with a modern twist on an old classic, with the traditional theme of reformation and possible outcomes.

Jude Shaw is the lead singer of the rock band The Blood Roses. They had it made with a platinum album, but have lost their way due in no small part to Jude’s overbearing and selfish attitude. Their downward slide in popularity has been slow but steady and when eventually they are booed off stage Jude predictably blames his band mates, Darren, Tom and Rob.  And to cap it all his girlfriend, Carrie, has left him. Jude can only see misery and loneliness in his future.

That night Jude is visited by the Ghost of Forewarning, who has a very crucial message. He is followed by three more apparitions, all rock legends, who take Jude on incredible journeys to revisit his past, present and his possible future. Jude couldn’t see how antagonistic and indifferent he had become to those closest to him. This was a wake up call like no other. Jude determines to change his ways and devises a plan which he hopes will bring everyone back together.

I loved this very creative, evocative story with the paranormal aspect, which was written extremely well.  The rock ghost references are inventive and fun. Very enjoyable, believable and well defined characters.

Fairy Tale In New York

Fairy Tale In New York by Nicky Wells

Fairy Tale In New York by Nicky Wells

Twelve months on from Jude’s transformational Christmas he and the band, along with Carrie and baby Maya, have just finished a successful US tour. Jude and his family are scheduled to fly home from New York. While waiting in line at the airport check in they swap flights with a man needing desperately to get to London. What’s another day? Unless, of course, one day turns into more. As a white out hits the city and all planes are grounded Jude, Carrie and Maya are stranded.

The hotel they’ve just left is full and no rooms are available anywhere. Jude, Carrie and Maya are facing a dismal and lonely Christmas. Or are they? A chance meeting changes everything. Little did either Jude or Carrie realise their good deed would result in an enchanting Christmas and totally unforeseen long-term benefits for them all.

A story full of Christmas spirit and joy of the season. A magical city covered in snow, making special friends, giving sick children in hospital a very special Christmas and an impromptu wedding. I love the perception that Christmas isn’t about how much you have and the commercialism but more to do with love, kindness and the benefits from helping other people.

“How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food and no presents?”

We meet Carrie Collins and Jude Shaw who first appeared in last year’s Christmas book “Spirits of Christmas” this book continues with their story but is just as good as a stand a lone read. It’s just before Christmas and Jude and Carrie are at JFK airport checking in for a flight home after the band Jude plays in has just been on tour. 17 gigs in 21 days. My Whyte is at the front of the queue a desperate man, his wife has gone into early labour and he is desperate to get on a flight to London to be with her, but all flights are full in the holiday rush.

Jude looks down at his own baby daughter Maya and remembers how if felt to be rushing to the hospital to be there for the birth and he offers to give up his seat on the plane. The airline arrange for Jude and his family to fly home the next day and Mr Whyte offers them his hotel suite for the night in exchange. This looks like the easiest option until a snowstorm comes and New York is shut down leaving Jude and his family stranded with no where to go on Christmas eve.

Read the tale of kindness and Christmas cheer which will leave you all warm and fuzzy.

Fairy Tale in New York

New York. A restaurant near Park Avenue. It’s early evening, and dusk is falling. So is the snow. Jude and Carrie are only killing time while they wait for their flight to London. They don’t know yet that their life will never be the same.

When rock star Jude gets stranded in New York with his family on Christmas Eve, he has no idea that he is setting in motion a chain of events that will turn their Christmas into the most magical one yet…

No good deed goes unpunished, or so it seems to Jude and Carrie on the morning of the twenty-fourth of December. The previous day, they gave up their London-bound flights to someone in crisis. And now, a spectacular whiteout is grounding all planes, and Jude, Carrie, and baby Maya are stuck far from home.

Tired, hungry, and just a little panicked, Jude loads his family into a cab and returns to their hotel. But there’s no room at the inn, and not even a platinum credit card will make a difference. Snow is falling heavily, and the family is facing a very bleak night indeed.

How do you celebrate Christmas with no place to stay, no food, and no presents? Join Jude, Carrie, Maya and a cast of colourful characters in this fairy tale story of Yuletide in New York.

Good Deeds Challenge, Year 2, Week 26

Welcome to my second Year of Good Deeds, a challenge I set myself during April 2013. I decided to do at least one Good Deed a day for a whole year, now I an into my second year.

New Good DeedsThis week I’ve been doing the following;

October 12th – This morning I had an extremely hard decision to make about a book, I was asked to read and review Obstacles by Chris Reardon after 14% I could read no further, for me the book needed to be seriously looked at by an editor, so I stopped reading and decided to write an appraisal of what I had written. I think this is only the second book I have been unable to write a review for. Looking on Amazon the book has a varied selection of reviews, several people gave similar thoughts to me, whilst others raved about the book. I do hope the author is open enough to consider the points I made.

Have taken on 3 more books to review today in my ever growing pile. Posted my review of Shared Skies by Josephine O’Brien, a YA fantasy set in the UK which I really enjoyed. Next up A Fairy Tale In New York for Nicky Wells who will be launching her book in December ready for Christmas.

October 13th – My morning helping at school, then a friend had some books she had finished reading and offered them to me, I took some for me and others to give away. Picked up litter on my way home.

October 14th – Launched my new feature Rosie’s Avid readers today. Reviews from real people who might say “I’ve just read this really good book…”.  Dropped some money into a Macmillan cancer collection box.

October 15th – Cleaned my house from top to bottom and threw out some old clothes. Am reading Midnight Sky by Jan Ruth and really enjoying it.

October 16th – Walked into town this afternoon, to borrow some books from the library and picked up litter.

October 17th – An overdue haircut this morning, left a tip. Launched The Friday Challenge with Shelley Wilson, inspiring people to try new things and change themselves for the better. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5MH

October 20th – Today I’m reading Craving by Sofia Grey A biker psychic and a girl who just might be his salvation. Now I do enjoy a psychic read so I have been snuggled on the sofa for most of the afternoon. Posted my review of Midnight Sky for Jan Ruth.

Good Deeds Challenge Year 2 Week 22

Welcome to my second Year of Good Deeds, a challenge I set myself during April 2013. I decided to do at least one Good Deed a day for a whole year, now I an into my second year.

New Good DeedsDuring my week I’ll also being updating you on My Kindness Challenge which I’m also doing. I read about a new challenge to make the world a better place to live in. “Speak Kind Words, Receive Kind Echoes” see the inspiration on  The Kindness blog . During my learning process I’m donating money to charity for my slip-ups to make me work harder to achieve results. I earn no money from any of my book reviews, so having little to spare should focus my mind.

September 14th – Dark Gothic romance is Jane Godman’s book Echoes in the Darkness, Day 14 of Romancing September. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5Hk

Am putting together plans for my next tour, this one will feature mystery books and their authors and will take place in November.

September 15th – Laura E James featured in Romancing September today with her book Follow Me , Follow You. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5xp

A school morning and I’m getting to know my new set of children that I listen to as they practise their reading. This year I have twins amongst my group, luckily they are not identical.  Donated a series of books to the school for their library that I had finished reading. Have been and bought a load more books again today, taking full advantage of the sales going on.

September 16th – Mary Forbes joins us on the Romance tour today with her book One Dance With A Stranger, Mary hails from Canada, it’s so great meeting all these people from across the world and bringing them together. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5yC

Getting lots of interest for the November Mystery book tour, busy sending out Q&A sheets and creating pictures to use on Twitter. I enjoy the challenge and the skills that I am learning from this task.

September 17th – Monica La Porta is the featured author on Romancing September today with her book The Lost Centurion, set in a stunning Italian landscape it mixes paranormal with hot romance. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5Er

Am off out to dinner this evening with friends, a rare treat, and it’s another good deed opportunity as it’s my turn to drive.

September 18th – E.L. Lindley is chatting about her book Dare To Lose today on Romancing September. http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-5DE

What a 24 hours! The blog is SO busy at the moment it’s truly wonderful, thank you to everyone who reads and reviews book, signs up for tours, comments and shares posts and tweets and everything else you do for me.  So here is a little something back for anyone going through an anxious and stressful time at the moment and with children in the Uk off the University this month, I know there will be a few Mums out there in need of a little TLC, firstly why not circle the date of your birthday on every month of the calendar and give yourself a little treat once a month for a whole year. Plan out what you could do, it could be time out for yourself, meeting with a friend, 15 minutes meditation, buying a new book randomly in a genre you don’t normally read, anything, but give yourself a well deserved treat.

Have been helping out my dearest friends with some support at their own emotional times. Plus recommending books for them to read. If you want to read them too, try these, get them in paperback, you’ll want to flip back through them too often to read on Kindle.
