Black Waters (Tainted Water, #2)Black Waters by India R. Adams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Blackwater is book #2 in the Tainted Water New Adult romantic novella series. This is Reether Jones’ story of events which we read about in book #1 Blue water. As well as being from Reether’s POV (or Link as he’s also called) I felt it answered some of the questions and gaps which readers may have had whilst reading the first book.

Reether prefers the peace and quiet of underwater swimming; he’s lucky to live with a lake in his backyard. For years he’s swum in the lake with best friend Whit, but the book opens with him horrified as she begins to drown whilst trying to save another.

With adolescence, Link and Whit have moved from best friends to falling in love with each other; however, everyone sees this, but them. Connie is currently Link’s girlfriend, but when Whit and Crash get together, Link is consumed with jealousy.

Crash, aka Harold Thompson, is the son of a drug baron. When Link finds out, he tries to keep Crash away from Whit, especially as Crash’s dad was behind the drugs which killed Whit’s brother. Link vows to keep Whit safe as she sleeps alone in her home; he camps outside her house each night, but he’s not the only one on night patrol. Crash, too, is keen to protect Whit. Their sole purpose turns them from enemies to friends; Link learns more about Crash, his tortured life and the real danger that Whit is in.

Shocked to learn that Crash, Link and Whit’s parents were once all friends, Link reels from new information about his own parentage. As the net around Whit closes in both Link and Crash vow to put their lives first before that of the girl they love.

Heart-warming heightened passion from two young men as they sit on the cusp of a dangerous adult world. I enjoyed book #1 and it was good to see the story from Link’s eyes. I will warn you that this book deals with the horrors of human trafficking; however, it shows them in a suitable way for the new adult readership.

STEAL ME by @TheIndiaRAdams #NA #Romance Book #1 Haunted Roads Series #TuesdayBookBlog

Steal Me (Haunted Roads #1)Steal Me by India R. Adams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Four Point Five Stars.

Steal Me is book #1 of The Haunted Roads series, in the new adult genre, and a deeply emotional story of teenage friendship and resilience. There are subtle messages of respect, loyalty and safety, important themes for teenagers to read about, and this book was a joy to read.

So what is this story about? It’s split in half; firstly Maverick, then Tucker’s tale, the book is mainly set in a small town in Georgia. Maverick is sixteen and has it all: he’s a keen sportsman who has a college scholarship, a hot girlfriend and a great family. All this ends on the night his father is killed in a road accident. When his mother breaks down with grief, Maverick is forced to step into the parental role for his five year old sister, Bailey. He shuts down his own feelings and bravely takes over leadership of his family.

At school, Maverick’s friends don’t know how to support or talk to him, and he becomes an outcast as he focuses on making Bailey’s life normal. Then a decision to move away from the old memories offers hope, and Maverick steps up once again as he finds the family a new home and sets up monetary funds for the future.

It’s here, whilst putting Bailey’s needs first, that Maverick meets Hu and Cole. Instead of being in their own teenage bubble, they reach out to Maverick and invite him to meet their friends. This includes Bailey, and the pair are welcomed by a compelling, diverse crowd. Tucker is like Maverick, fiercely protective of his sister and determined to do the right thing for others too. Viola throws out sharp retorts but there’s also a soft side; she is wise beyond her years and was one of my favourite characters.

There’s much for Maverick to learn about his new friends, but they offer him support and the chance to just be a teenager. There’s pain too; Delilah is reeling from the death of her boyfriend, Viola’s had her own family losses and Tucker vowed to protect those he could. Maverick is drawn to Delilah and is determined to peel away her layers of hurt. He becomes the key to her recovery and the group of friends do all they can to bring the couple together. Their story takes them through the end of high-school, college and to their early twenties.

Part two is Tucker’s story: the loss of his own mother, the role he took in standing up for Delilah and Viola, his best friend Kenny’s tale and Tucker’s own sense of failure when he ran away from his perceived responsibilities. It’s about how events shaped, moulded and taught a hot-headed boy about life. Beginning when he was still a child, it takes us through to his life after college. I easily felt empathy for Tucker as I did for Maverick as each story unfolded; however, soon after Tucker began talking I lost Maverick from my head. I put this down to both of their dialogue styles being similar. They are both great characters, but I would have enjoyed a sharper distinction between the two.

Warning! There is a cliff-hanger ending, but I didn’t mind. Yes, I was itching to find out what happened next, but I can see that it was a good time to break from the intense story, allowing the reader to breathe and mull over all they have read. The characters and this story are here with me in my head as I write this. I was very taken with the themes of abuse, loss and suffering which these teenagers turned into strength, resilience and support. But don’t roll your eyes, thinking that the next book will give a happy ever after ending; these people feel too real for the standard, neat HEA. Instead, I think they’ll stay with you and haunt you for a little while.

Book Description

“Some relationships have hidden truths that few can survive. Only us strong ones can dare listen to, and have the balls to stay and bear witness to, the result of irrevocable damages. So tell me, Maverick, are you one of the strong?”

Maverick, unfortunately, is well aware of Tucker’s meaning. Mav has recently lost his father, his mother is slipping into a depression, and his little sister is in desperate need of a parental figure. But now he’s losing his heart to Tucker’s mysterious sister, Delilah. As Maverick squints into the sun, looking at the beauty standing in front of the lake, he wonders if his heart is crazy for begging him to take on yet another tragedy.

BLUE WATERS by @TheIndiaRAdams @UFBooks #NA #Romance #TuesdayBookBlog #Valentine read

Blue Waters (Tainted Water #1)Blue Waters by India R. Adams
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Blue Waters is a novella, book #1 in a NA romance series called Tainted Water. The book is set in Connecticut.

It opens with an intriguing underwater scene which gives the impression that someone is about to drown. It posed so many questions it had me hooked as a reader.

Chapter one introduces us to Link and Whit two baddass teenagers from privileged elite families. Rebel kids on paths of destruction just to push the boundaries their families have set up for them. Link is being groomed for Yale and law, Whit for Harvard and medicine.

Yet here they are goofing around, acting bad. All link wants, apparently, is to be a footballer and Whit wants to dance. Best friends, best buddies, they’d do anything for each other. Their relationship is so close they could well be lovers or if not, certainly on the brink of changing their situation. Yet Link has a serious girlfriend and Whit just doesn’t think of Link that way.

Whit is sassy, fun and hugely entertaining, her conversation running on the fly is terrific and her friends all know her so well that they fall in line wherever her train of mad thoughts go. At the movie theatre Whit meets Mr Lickable, a guy she finds instantly attractive, yet in fun Whit style their conversation is sassy and warped with her allowing him to call her Frankie and she implying she has children of her own. Amused by this hot running mouth he catches up with her after the movie, but rather than being caught out, Whit does what Whit does best and runs her entertainment at full volume.

Crash, as Mr Lickable has been nicknamed, pursues Whit, but they are both hiding from families and the past. They paint a facade for the world, but their secrets worm their way to form a bond. Through all this, Link is there to protect Whit, always, and when he finds out more about Crash and how he is connected to Whit’s past, the friendship road crashes in style, but their feelings for each other live on.

The intensity of the break-up was immense with emotions deeply felt, I was reminded of the despair felt by Bella in Twilight’s New Moon. The break-up of Crash and Whit pushed the pair to extremes in their daily lives. The story built to an ending which suited the book, it was raw and painful.

I liked this book, the novella length fitted the insta-love, no time to spend on slow burning build-ups, the language was emotional and I was easily there, deep in the book with the characters. Whit’s sassy dialogue and thoughts were a pleasure to read. The dance storyline was weakest for me, feeling a little cliched and a few typos still need attention if you want to be picky, but a very enjoyable quick read. Book #2 I believe, is Link’s tale of the events but told from a very different angle.

“The blue water I sank through was angelic, quiet, peaceful…”

Whitney is a vivacious, highly spirited 17-year-old girl. Her motto, “Live life to the fullest” is derailed when the young man, who’s captured her attention, turns out to be the son of a drug tycoon- the same that provided the drugs that killed her brother. Whitney believes she simply needs to heal from her first heartache, not knowing she is a part of a devious trade, one against human rights, and she has been… since the day age was born.

Blue Waters is the first Novella in a Tainted Waters, and begins a story of deception, corruption, self-discovery, and love with all that it demands you sacrifice…

“There was a beauty in dying that day…”

AN ARRANGEMENT by Lindsay Marie Miller #NA #Romance @Lindsay_MMiller #BookReview

An ArrangementAn Arrangement by Lindsay Marie Miller
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

An Arrangement is a NA romance set in New York. Claire Andrews’ younger sister Amy has a rare heart defect. Dr Abrams wants to try some expensive experimental treatments which won’t be covered by insurance, so the family must foot the bill.

Since her Dad’s death, twenty year old Claire has been holding the family together. She is shocked to find that the family wealth has either been used up by her mother or is locked in trust funds for Claire and her sister. Claire can access her money in a week’s time when she turns twenty-one, but their is a will stipulation that she must be married to someone of equal or more financial standing.

She turns to childhood family friend Benjamin Lewis and basically asks him to marry her for the sake of Amy. He surprisingly agrees straight away, but his consent starts off a roller coaster ride of will they? Won’t they, as Claire bounces from uncertainty about the wedding sham to loyalty to her sister.

Claire’s character actions have been written in such a way that they drive many readers to frustration, her almost childlike petulance and stubborn anger create constant rebounding moments. Yet through it all Ben perseveres with his insistence that he wants to marry Claire and do the right thing. A different man may well have thrown the towel in and walked away with the treatment he received.

Claire’s mother is an enigma, one moment a crushed mess unable to cope with her daughter’s illness and the loss of her husband, the next a cold a callous matron following the money trail.

There’s a lot of emotional anger in the book from many sides. Did it work for me? I don’t know. I did want to see more depth and maturity to Claire. I also felt there was room to tighten the writing in places where small scenes and actions were over written with tendencies towards tautology.

Who might enjoy this book? I think it might appeal to readers new to the NA romantic genre.

EAGLE RIVER by Isabelle Kane #NA sports themed #Romance @KaneIsabelle #weekendblogshare

Eagle RiverEagle River by Isabelle Kane
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Eagle River is a New Adult sports themed romance set in and around Wisconsin and revolves around the sport of American football.

Kjersten and Galen were school sweethearts but broke up when Galen’s mother died. Unable to deal with the loss Galen cut Kjersten off, but never forgot her. When he sees her with a rival football star at a local fair, Galen’s jealousy rockets. He vows to apply to a college away from Kjersten.

Galen’s father is a disabled drunk, but Galen’s always had lots of support from his football coach, a man troubled by a secret he holds. At coach’s wedding, Galen and Kjersten are brought together once more, but their relationship path is still a rocky one, just how many times can a girl be left dangling before she walks away?

This storyline theme is a popular one, with high spirited players and a love triangle. I would like to see it have another run through editing to iron out areas with clunky dialogue, typos and areas where it needs it a bit of a polish to make it more of an enjoyable read.
