Our guest today is Evelyn Cullet and her book Masterpiece of Murder.
Masterpiece of Murder
Heartbroken American art student, Charlotte Ross, is so intent on locating her errant fiancé that she submits someone else’s painting as her own in order to gain access to a Master art class being held in the resort city of Bariloche, Argentina—the place her lost love was last seen. When the painting gets her accepted into the class given by a world-famous artist and womanizer, being a novice makes keeping up with the others nearly impossible as she struggles to fake her way though, while trying to win back the man she loves.
But her fiancé has his own reason for being in Bariloche. He’s after a stolen art masterpiece. After he talks her into helping him, Charlotte’s life suddenly gets complicated, and her very existence is threatened as she stumbles into a downward spiral of deceit, art forgery, and murder. When she accidently comes across the murder victim, circumstantial evidence begins to mount against her, and the local police think she’s the killer. Now she must find out who’s really behind the murder before she’s arrested. Not an easy task with a smitten military police officer dogging her every step.
Where is your hometown?
I was born and raised in Chicago.
What do you like about writing in the mystery genre?
I like to write mysteries for the who done it or the puzzle aspect. I enjoy putting my protagonist in peril, and then setting out the clues, along with a few red herrings, for her to put the pieces together and find the solution. But when I write a mystery, I also like to add an the element of romance. I think it gives the story heart, and adds to the reader’s enjoyment well after the puzzle is solved.
What sub-genre of mystery does your book fit?
My sub-genre is romance.
Where is your book set?
Masterpiece of Murder is set in the resort city of Bariloche, (pronounced, Bar-ill-o-cha), Argentina. I was looking for an unusual setting, so when I saw the photos of Bariloche with its snow-capped mountains, glaciers, dense woods, and crystalline lakes, the writer in me immediately thought that the solitude and scenic beauty of the area would be a perfect place to set my mystery. While the landscape was indeed beautiful, it was also the worst possible setting for my protagonist to be in when she discovers that she’s the only suspect in a murder case. She’s in a foreign country where she’s unfamiliar with the customs and the laws. She has a limited command of the language, and the nearest American Embassy is in Buenos Aries, 837 miles away.
Can you introduce us to the main characters?
The two main characters in Masterpiece of Murder are:
Charlotte Ross: A smart, savvy, working woman who’s determined, resourceful and fiercely loyal. But she sometimes makes impulsive choices which lead her into situations that can put her life in danger.
Charlotte’s fiancé is, Brett Stalworth: A handsome, dedicated former FBI agent, turned P.I., who loves Charlotte. He can often be stubborn in his viewpoint, and will take any measures to get what he wants.
