When the Crows Fly LowWhen the Crows Fly Low by V.J. Patterson
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

When The Crow Flies Low is a true love story, as opposed to a romance. This book takes you on a roller-coaster of emotions as you follow the harrowing life-story of Will Lawson. The title is from a family omen “When the Crows Fly Low – rain is coming”, and is a pivotal saying for 11 year old Will.

In 1924 Will and his friend Sam were fishing when Will realises he’s late to help his father on the farm. They live in Doyle, Tennessee. Running home he sees three low flying crows and the old saying rings through his head. He arrives in the field full of guilt that his father had to mend the fences alone, but finds him arguing with a neighbour about ruined watermelons. Joe Cannon is drunk again and the argument turns into a fight, one that Will, will never forget. Distraught and blaming himself for his father’s death Will’s childhood ends that day.

With 8 siblings Will and his family worked hard to keep the farm, but it was finally lost in the 1929 crash. Now a young man, Will works in the local mill, but is part of an illegal bootlegging gang. He drinks hard and plays hard trying to drown out the dark side which rears its ugly head. He avoids large social events and has lost all faith in God.

It takes the arrival of the new school teacher, Sarah Williams to pull Will from the gloom. Like a moth attracted to a light Will can’t get Sarah out of his mind. She brings out the good in him and he begins to thaw and open up about his dark side. However all this comes crashing down when Joe Cannon is released from jail.

This story is told through a letter sent to Sarah in 1982 and the details are filled by her own memories of events, she never stopped loving Will although her life went on and he in turn never stopped loving her. The author does a really good job of pulling the reader into the story and filling them with all the emotions of the characters, a very well written read.

Both Sides of LoveBoth Sides of Love by Kimberly Wenzler

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Both Sides Of Love is a true Love Story. It is set in Pennsylvania and opens with a scene from 1978. Lizzie is 21 she has her life ahead of her studying environmental science, she has a wonderful boyfriend whom she plans to spend the rest of her life with and she has the support of her best friend Nancy.

With Daniel away in England, Lizzie and Nancy are off to a party when they are involved in a tragic traffic accident.

Fast forward to 1990 and we meet Beth, a shy woman married to Alan with a young daughter. Forcing herself out of her comfort zone Beth heads for her first PTA meeting. Very conscious of her limp, and scarring from the accident, Beth is a different person. She changed her name and after a long time was persuaded to pick up her life by her devoted father.

At the meeting Beth meets another new Mum, Noreen and the two soon become firm friends. They are both good for each other and the friendship blossoms. But it’s a friendship which will be greatly tested for more than one reason.

This is a classic love story, one which is very well written, it takes you on highs and lows, it brought tears to my eyes and definitely had me routing for Beth as she faced all her hurdles.

Till Heaven Then Forever by Linda Heavner Gerald @LindaHeavnerGer

Till Heaven Then ForeverTill Heaven Then Forever by Linda Heavner Gerald

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Till Heaven Then Forever is a simple love story told from the male POV. Brian is a 64 year old ex-military man. He’s well off and has played the field for several years. He’s been seeing Lily a 39 year old with relationship baggage.

They hit it off and decide to move to his property in the Bahamas. It is an idyllic setting and they spend many years there until Brian is diagnosed with macular degeneration. They decided to sell up and return to the States for Brian’s treatment. They have a new found faith in God and his will to provide all that they need, especially when they decide to find a property in Florida.

Amongst new friends Lily becomes a writer, they look after dogs for friends and finally agree to marry.

This is a light read and I believe more showing the reader the story rather than telling would have improved my connection to the characters. The mass information pieces about the Bahamas didn’t move the story along fast enough for my entertainment. Some of the dialogue felt stiff, I would have liked a little more everyday speech to make it a little warmer. Telling the story from the male POV worked well and it had a good ending.
