Karen has been reading Scathed by Sue Coletta

Scathed

Sue has done it again! I was so happy to receive this book as an ARC and I am very happy to give an honest review of this book. I must say that Sue Coletta is one of those authors that I will purchase her books as soon as I hear that she has a new one out, without reading the blurb, or reviews. Sue is a great author and there is so much of her in her books. For anyone who follows Sue on social media and then reads her books will see her in the story. One of my favorite lines from the book is “We all want to be remembered after we die. Through the power of the written word authors are immortalized.” This is only part of the quote, but the quote really resonated with me and I loved it.

I loved Scathed. It was a story that had me thinking and trying to figure out who the killer was, but Sue doesn’t make it easy to figure out. The twists and turns in this story were intriguing and interesting. I found myself thinking one thing and finding out that I was not on the right trail after all. The characters are so real to me in Sue’s books. I love Niko and Sage, they are such a great couple and they work so well together to figure out the cases. They are so well developed that they feel like my neighbors. Being a Vermonter myself, I felt as if I could see the mountain they were on and the area they live in with no problem.

If you like stories that will draw you in, keep your interest throughout the book. This is a great book to pick up and read. I hated to put it down, and I hated to see it end. I wanted more of Niko and Sage. I love that Frankie is not afraid to be herself with everyone that she meets. She doesn’t hold anything back and that makes her a great character.

I loved the twist at the end and look forward to the next book in the Grafton County Series to see what happens next. I give this book a 5 star review and highly recommend it to anyone who likes crime, thrillers, and suspense stories and characters who will draw you in to their lives.

Book description

On a picturesque fall morning in Grafton County, New Hampshire, a brutal murder rocks the small town of Alexandria. In the backyard of a weekend getaway cabin, a dead woman is posed in red-satin, with two full-bloomed roses in place of eyes.

In her hand, a mysterious envelope addressed to Sheriff Niko Quintano. Inside, Paradox vows to kill again if his riddle isn’t solved within 24 hours.

With so little time and not enough manpower, Niko asks his wife for help. But Crime Writer Sage Quintano is dealing with her own private nightmare. Not only did she find massive amounts of blood on the mountain where she and her family reside, but a phone call from the past threatens her future—the creepy mechanical voice of John Doe, the serial killer who murdered her twin sister.

Together, can Niko and Sage solve the riddle in time to save the next victim? Or will the killer win this deadly game of survival?

Brogan McLane, a young man who had a rough start to life has turned his life around and is now a Member of the Faculty of Advocates in the Scottish Supreme Court, he became a lawyer. He had a beautiful wife that he loved very much, a very good, long time friend who was on the wrong side of the law, but he would do anything for, and a career that he was very proud of. Until everything went wrong. A judge was murdered and Brogan McLane has been arrested for the murder.

Judge Aldounhill, a man who is power hungry, and a has a lot of secrets, is murdered in his home late at night after a rather sketchy party. He is a judge who got his position by telling his friends that if they put his name in to be judge, he would do the same for them in the next go round. However, he never helped anyone else out but himself. He made a lot of enemies by being a man who lied, cheated, and did what he could to get further in life in an unorthodox way.

Big Joe Malarky, a man who has been arrested a few times, but nothing has ever stuck. He is a big man who has a lot of loyal friends. His son is arrested and convicted of a crime he did not commit. Wee Joe Malarky will pay the price that his father has never had to pay. He is sentenced and put in jail with no luck of parole or appeal for the conviction. Big Joe’s wife is beside herself when they receive the second letter telling them that their son will not be able to appeal.

This story was very well written and really drew me in. As I read it, I wanted to know more of the story and couldn’t wait to find out the truth of the murder. The characters were very well developed and made me want to scream at some and shake the hands of others. The story has a lot of twists, detail and the connections to crimes and convictions is well hidden and developed.

I give this story a 5 star review. I look forward to reading more of this series and more from Mr. Mayers. Great job!

Book description

An urban legal/crime novel set in the beautiful Scottish city of Edinburgh.
Part I of The Parliament House book series

When Glaswegian Brogan McLane completes many years of university education and legal training he crosses that great divide from Glasgow to Edinburgh. ‘Called’ to the Bar of the Scottish Supreme Court, he becomes a member of the most prestigious club in Scotland; The Faculty of Advocates in Parliament House.

When High Court Judge, Lord Aldounhill, is found dead after a transvestite party in his sumptuous home, those who know the killer close ranks and need a scapegoat – who better than ‘outsider’ Brogan McLane?

Out on bail with his career on hold, McLane and his band of blood brothers in the Calton Bar in Glasgow need to get ahead of their enemies or McLane will go down for life after Trial. But every time they discover a piece of evidence, it seems there is a mirror image to contradict it.

Through the murky world of Russian controlled transvestite hotels and with some unexpected police and judicial help, McLane battles against ‘Low Life in High Places in the Old Town’ until the killer is found.

But well protected and knowing all the tricks, will the killer ever stand trial in Parliament House.

About the author

John Mayer would love to be a top-flight blues guitar player and have dated Jennifer Aniston. But what he did achieve, amongst other things was to be a 1970s Indie Record Producer before becoming a top-flight Advocate in the Supreme Court of Scotland where he specialised in international child abduction: rescuing the children, not abducting them, of course.

In his youth, John was shot! Twice! Once in Glasgow, Scotland and once in New York City. John attacks everything he does with passion. And that’s what he brings to his writing.

Karen has been reading Maggie’s Revenge by Jacquie Biggar

36604203

Magdalena (Maggie) Holt, a DEA Agent undercover in a Cartel who is in danger and has become a captive, is working very hard to get back home and take down the man who has taken her a prisoner and intends to sell her to the highest bidder. Maggie’s intent on getting home and taking down Chenglei in the process so that she can rid the world of one of the scariest men she has met. She’s locked away in a compound in Mexico and needs to find a way to get home and take Chenglei down in the process. She manages to escape along with 5 other women who were being held with her, they make it out of the compound and hide until help can get there to take them back to the US and home.

Adam O’Connor, Maggie’s partner in the DEA and former lover, is beside himself that Maggie has been gone for so long and that they cannot locate her to bring her home. His SAC Amanda Rhinehold wants nothing more than to bring Agent Holt home as well, but she is a woman who is in charge and has to follow protocol to do it. She is trying to get Agent O’Connor off the case because she feels he is too close to it. Adam is sure that once Maggie gets back home they can work things out and get back together, but he’s confused because he’s attracted to his SAC.

This is the 6th book in Jacquie Biggar’s Wounded Hearts Series and is the first one I have read in the series. I wish I had read the stories in order from the first one to this one, but it did not retract from the story as Ms. Biggar gives a lot of back story to understand what is going on. I really enjoyed this story and enjoy reading Ms. Biggar’s books. They are well written and the characters feel like someone you would meet on the streets and like as a person if you talked to them and got to know them.

If you like a strong men and very strong willed women and enjoy a story where the heroine hides her fear when doing her job, but always has to win, then you will love this book. I give this story a 5 star review, and I look forward to going back and reading the other stories in this series.

Book description

DEA Special Agent Maggie Holt is fierce, smart, beautiful– and in over her head.

Maggie has been working undercover 15 months when she is taken by Chinese-Mexican cartel leader, Chenglei. She tries to escape with 8 other women and is captured and brutally punished.

Adam O’Connor is angry and frustrated. It’s his fault his partner, and one-time lover, is missing and no matter how many leads he chases, they don’t bring Maggie home.

Will these two strong men find Maggie? And will their decades old friendship be destroyed by their love for the same woman?

Karen has been reading Hiding by Jenny M Potts

A different read for me, with a different twist at the end. Not what I expected at all.

Keller is looking to get pay back for his father’s sentencing after a heist gone wrong with the murder of an ex judge. He wants retribution for his father taking the fall for the disaster that occurred that day in NC.

Rebecca wants answers as to where her parents are and what happened to them. When she begins to dig around in old newspapers she only ends up with more questions.

This book goes back and forth between years with the history of what happened and present day. The story is well written and the back and forth between the years is done well.

This thriller will keep you hoping for the best for both of these young people who are thrown into this predicament because of their parents. This story shows that things aren’t always as they seem and that we may not always have the power to make our lives out to be what we hope for. I give this story a 4.5 star review. Although, the end left me with more questions than answers.

Book description

A gripping psychological thriller with chilling twists, from a unique new voice.

Keller Baye and Rebecca Brown live on different sides of the Atlantic. Until she falls in love with him, Rebecca knows nothing of Keller. But he’s known about her for a very long time, and now he wants to destroy her.

This is the story of two families. One living under the threat of execution in North Carolina. The other caught up in a dark mystery in the Scottish Highlands. The families’ paths are destined to cross. But why? And can anything save them when that happens?

About the author

Jenny Morton Potts was born in a smart, dull suburb of Glasgow where the only regular excitement was burglary. Attended a smart, dull school where the only regular excitement was the strap. Worked in smart, dull sales and marketing jobs until realising she was living someone else’s life.

Escaped to Gascony to make gîtes. Knee deep in cement and pregnant, Jenny was happy. Then autism and a distracted spine surgeon who wanted to talk about The Da Vinci Code, wiped out the order. Returned to wonderful England – and unlikely ever to leave again – Jenny, with assistance from loyal hound, walked and swam her way back to manageable health.

Jenny would like to see the Northern Lights but worries that’s the best bit and should be saved till last. Very happily, and gratefully, partnered for 28 years, she ought to mention, and living with inspirational child in Derbyshire.

When a Stranger Comes... by [Bell, Karen S.]

Quite a different read from what I am used to. I did not expect this book to turn out like it did. I liked the book and hated to put it down. I needed to find out what was going on in the story and try to understand Alexa’s story.

I have to say that in the beginning I wasn’t sure if this was a book I would like or not. The prologue was good, and drew me in, but the first chapter made me question the rest of the book. Wow, was I wrong. After I got through the first page of the first paragraph, I was really drawn in and wanted to hurry up and read the book to find out what was going on.

An author who is writing a trilogy and has just finished the third book in the trilogy when things go awry for her. Alexa’s reality comes into question after she receives a phone call from her copy editor and friend Margaret. Is Alexa dreaming, is she writing a new story, or is this her new reality? Who is real and who is a figment of imagination? These are all questions that were going through my mind while reading this book.

A story full of angst, mind games, and questions of reality. If you enjoy a book that keeps you on the edge of your seat, once you get into it, then you really need to read “When A Stranger Comes”. I give this book a 4.5 star review.

Book description

A GRIPPING PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER IN THE TRADITION OF KING AND KOONTZ!

Satisfying one’s greed can come at a devilishly high cost.

Achieving what you crave can also bring the terrifying fear of losing it. For Alexa Wainwright, this truth has become her nightmare. Born Gladys Lipschitz, the daughter of an unwed Soviet-era Jewish immigrant, she was beyond thrilled and amazed when her debut novel, A Foregone Conclusion, soared to number one on the bestseller’s list and became an international sensation. The accompanying fame and riches were beyond her expectations. Unfortunately, her subsequent work has yet to achieve the same reception by critics and readers. Yes, they have sold well based on her name recognition, but she dreads the possibility of becoming a mid-list author forgotten and ignored. She vows to do whatever it takes to attain the heady ego-stroking success of her debut. But is she really?

Witnessing an out-of-the-blue lightning bolt whose giant tendrils spread over the blue sky and city streets below her loft window, Alexa doesn’t realize just how this vow will be tested as she’s magically transported to an alternate reality. In this universe, the characters from her books are given the breath of life and she meets publisher, King Blakemore, who just might be the Devil himself. At first, she shrugs off her doubts about this peculiar publisher and very lucrative book deal offer because the temptation of riches and refound fame is too strong. But all too soon, Alexa realizes she’s trapped in an underworld of evil from which she desperately wants to escape. For starters, she finds herself in an iron-clad book contract that changes its wording whenever she thinks of a loophole. Desperate to get her life back, she devises schemes to untether herself from this hellish existence.

About the author

Karen S. Bell continues to be in awe of the magical and wondrous phenomenon called life. As an observer and obvious participant in feminine values and approach to our human challenges, she brings this perspective to her work. Fascinated by the mysteries of the unseen forces that perhaps play a role in guiding our choices, she continues to search for answers in the mundane as well as in the cosmic forces that surround us. She is working on her third novel and lives in Ponte Vedra, Fl. with her husband and their two furry kids.

Karen has been reading The Angel Killer by April Taylor

35249656

Wow, what an awesome read! I was not expecting this story when I read the blurb, or when I began to read the book, but it was a great surprise. I loved this story. The story is well written and the characters jump off the pages into your mind and make you feel as if you are working with them to find the killer.

I was not expecting a love story to be intertwined in this story, but there is and it draws so much more out of the story in my opinion. Terri and Deryn are a great team and their attraction to each other draws so much more out of them to help with figuring out who the killer is.  I found myself silently yelling at Harry, Deryn, Terri, and the others to figure out where the danger was coming from and get it to stop.

If you like suspense stories that keep you wondering throughout the book who the bad guy, or girl is, this is the book to pick up and read. I read this within a day and hated to put it down to do anything. I was shocked to find out who the killer was.

Great job on this story April. I loved it and give it 5 stars. I look forward to reading more of your work.

Book description

Deryn Steele has an unwanted psychic gift leftover from a near-death experience. He can read people just by touching them. His friend, DCI Harry Curzon pulls him into the hunt for the killer of blonde, blue-eyed 12-year-old girls in the Lincolnshire seaside town of Thorpe St David, the Angel Killer..
Deryn meets Terri Fordham, aunt of the latest victim, who has survived an attack. It is a shock when he cannot read Terri, but this feeds his growing feelings for her making him determined to catch the predator. It soon becomes clear, however, that this killer won’t stop and is not only still targeting Terri’s niece, but also Terri. Can Deryn keep the girl and her aunt safe and unmask the murderer?

A Great Story! This is a great love story. It is light and funny, but very honest. The characters are very relatable and likeable. Guy is a business man who is not looking for a permanent relationship, but when he starts working with Lyna his attraction begins and does not let up. He begins to flirt with her and because she is reserved and engaged, she does not give in to his flirting. She feels a pull to him, but she is engaged to another man and ignores the pull. Lyna’s engagement is a business deal. She isn’t in love with Brijesh, nor is she really attracted to him. She agreed to marry him  because he promised to give her a production company of her own.

Guy is the oldest child and feels the family obligation very strongly. When he and Lyna are video taped kissing, and the video goes viral, things get complicated between the two. Lyna has issues already with her fiancé and is trying to get out of the engagement. Both families have some issues and Guy and Lyna are trying to please their families. I love Dadu and his eccentricity and keeping with tradition. He is a force to be rekoned with when it comes to the family and they all do their best to keep him happy, the only one who will stand up to him is Guy.

I give this story a 4.5 star review. If you like a book that is light and funny, but will keep you turning the pages, especially towards the end, this is a great book to read. I love the chemistry between Guy and Lyna, and the way that they each deal with their family issues is different, but gentle.

I look forward to reading more books by Summerita in the future.

Book description

When best laid plans fall apart…
Lyna is all set to marry a movie mogul, when she finds his pregnant ex at her office, begging her to break the engagement and keep her name out of it. Forced to take her flirtatious boss Guy’s help, she sets about to break the engagement. But now she’s pulled into deeper involvement with Guy.
One trouble leads to another!
She agrees to visit his palatial country house, posing as his fiancée and is drawn into the family and their antics. Sorting out who’s who takes time. A stringent grandfather, an ambitious mother, a frustrated half brother are only the beginning!
Attraction makes things complicated
Propinquity with someone as charming and attractive as Guy doesn’t help. But Guy himself is as much of a puzzle as ever. Is he the playboy she thinks him or is there someone else beneath the sardonic pose? Will she ever find out?
Will she break her heart in the process?

About the author

Summerita Rhayne writes sensual romance which is sheer escapism with lots of emotional conflict. She first got published in 2013 and has won contests with prestigious publishers such as Harlequin and Harper Collins India. Writing, she finds, is the only way to deal with the numerous story ideas bubbling in her brain which pop up more rapidly than her keyboard can do justice to. Her pet belief is that even when writing time is in short supply, if the inspiration is strong enough, the story characters get a life of their own and will find a way to make the writer pen them down. When cerebrally confronted with the sizzling interaction of two Alpha characters, the only way to get peace is write their book!

At heart, she’s a family person and even though she loves her medical teaching profession, she happily becomes a homemaker when not at work. She loves winding down with music, movies, cricket (strictly watching only) and social networking.

A romantic suspense story with a strong willed woman who needs the help of a man she thought she would never see again. T.J. and Jason are brought back together after ten years because Jason is on a case, and T.J. may be mixed up in the case he is investigating.

T.J.’s heart was broken when she was a teenager and she had to move on with her life, but her heart was not involved in the move. Now she is faced with seeing the man who broke her heart and tries to figure out if she did move on, or if her heart just stopped until she saw Jason again.

Jason was brought into this case to see if they could get anywhere since he is from this town and the main people under investigation may be related to him. He knows that he was never able to move on from his love for T.J. and seeing her again brings all of those feelings back to the surface for him.

I really enjoyed this story and wished it had gone on longer. I enjoy a story that draws me in and keeps me reading and forgetting about life going on around me and this book did just that. It is very easy to get into the story and lose track of time with this book.

Book description

How can something so wrong, feel so right?

Falling for her step-brother is a mistake T.J. doesn’t want to repeat, but one look into those sapphire blue eyes and she’s ready to give him whatever he wants.

Tammy-Jo Hawthorne’s marriage was floundering, but she never expected her husband to make her the laughing stock of Magnolia.
And she definitely didn’t expect to trip over him in their front yard after he’d been murdered.
Jason McIntyre was forced out of his home and the love of his life by the man who’d haunted his nightmares for ten long years.
Now Jason’s back–and he wants revenge.

Wow! The first thought that comes to my mind at the end of this book. I loved this book. Sue does a great job with her characters and the plot. I loved the detailed information about crows in this book as well. I found this book to be a gripping story and I wanted to read it in one sitting, but unfortunately, life and work got in the way. I hated to put it down and go to bed at night. Sue’s characters are so well written that I can find someone that I know who might be just like them and it makes them that much more real. I love the friendship between Nadine and Shawnee, the fact that they are different personalities makes their friendship so much more entertaining. I love that Sue added some Boston dialect in the book too.

Great story, and characters. I love Sue’s books and I have only just started reading her work, but will be filling my library with her books as soon as I can. This is a 5-star book in my opinion. Thank you for sharing your wonderful story telling talent Sue!

Book Description

A chance encounter …a deadly predicament …a lethal decision.
The infamous Mr. Mayhem is not your average serial killer. Reminiscent of the beloved Hannibal Lecter, minus his thirst for flesh—because eating humans is just plain rude—Mr. Mayhem storms on the scene with style, grace, elegance, and a zest for life unlike any other. Impeccable manners also help. He may commit murder, but there’s no reason to be impolite about it.
Accompanied by his loyal crow companions, Poe, Allan, and Edgar, his crimes strike fear in the hearts and minds of folks across Massachusetts’ North Shore. When Shawnee Daniels—cat burglar extraordinaire and forensic hacker for the police—meets Mayhem in the dark, she piques his curiosity. Sadly for her, she leaves behind an item best left undiscovered. Or is it serendipity by design?
Color him curious, but he yearns to examine the psychology behind her life choices, tough girl routine, witty banter, and unique double-life. In a different time and place they may even become friends. But unfortunately, their predicament defines the risk.
