Hydrangea | Rosie Amber

January is a hard month to find exciting things growing in the northern hemisphere, but I have found six items for this week’s post.

The first three photos.

Firstly, I have been trimming my variegated Tradiscantia which was getting leggy and looking shabby, so I have take lots of cuttings which I hope to grow into new plants.

Next photo is this lovely scented white Jasmine. A couple of weeks ago I showed it budding up and now the flowers are opening and it is giving off a delicate scent.

The third photo is of more cuttings which are beginning to grown roots. Here we have a jar with an African Violet leaf and an Echeveria leaf.

Next are small green shoots on two of the hydrangea cuttings that I took last autumn. I’ve had to bring them inside as they were getting too damp in the cold frame and were showing signs of mould.

The second photo is of the red Kalanchoe which is just coming into bud. Also known as flaming Katy, Christmas kalanchoe, florist kalanchoe and Madagascar widow’s-thrill. A tropical succulent, they are a perennial flowering plant from the Crassulaceae family.

Last photo goes to the Bluebells in the back garden which are starting to push through. It will be a while yet before they flower.

We had more welcome rain this week and I was out catching it in my bowls and buckets. Small patches of brown lawns are turning greener. So what’s still growing in my garden this week?

Six photos from my garden — August 27th Six On Saturday

The Cone Flower or Echinacea that I featured a couple of weeks ago is now in full flower with several heads on this one plant.

Yesterday I picked the one melon that grew on my plant, it was getting wet on the ground despite trying to raise it off the soil. I didn’t want it rotting. I shall leave it in the sun to fully ripen. Not sure of the variety, it may be a cantaloupe.

I have a second variety of cucumber growing in the greenhouse. this one has a prickly skin, but I’m unsure of the name.

The Hydrangea bought back in April is continuing to flower. It is still in its pot. I need advice on when I should plant it out. Now that we’ve had some rain, or leave it until Spring?

I have successfully grown several Agapanthus from seeds given to me by a relative. These will be over-wintered inside and planted out next year.

Last photo goes to the final flower from my Velvet Queen (red) sunflower. Despite the drought they have flowered well.
