First to Fall Cover

Aiden Connelly’s first case will be one he’ll never forget.

Lawyer Aiden Connelly has traded the frenzy of Chicago for a slower pace in sleepy Avalon – and his first case appears to be as open-and-shut as he could hope for. Hired to defend a local ex-beauty queen accused of murdering her husband, he’s confident that he’ll have the case closed in record time. But below the surface lurks a darker truth…

Suddenly, a quiet backwater has transformed into a dangerous pressure cooker. In a town where everyone knows everyone, gathering evidence should be easy… but the harder Aiden searches, the more he appreciates how tangled this net of loyalties is. And as he digs deeper, Aiden begins to realise that his very first case in Avalon could be the beginning of his undoing

Where is your home town?

I live in Telford, Shropshire.

What do you like about writing in the mystery genre?

I’m particularly drawn to how character’s respond to a mystery. How an unresolved death or murder can change those closest to the victim. I’ve always loved stories that pack a real emotional punch which I think mysteries do.

What sub-genre of mystery does your book fit?

First to Fall is an emotional thriller revolving around a mystery in a small town.

Where is your book set?

It’s set in Chicago, America and also a fictional town called Avalon which is rotten with secrets.

Can you introduce us to the main characters?

The main character in the book, and also the Avalon series, is Aiden Connelly. He’s a young lawyer who has relocated his family to the small town of Avalon in the hope of finding a quieter life there. But what he discovers is a town full of closed doors and closely guarded secrets.

Aiden is always trying to do the right thing but this desire often leads him in to bad situations. He’s a character who I love to write as he has many flaws but also so many redeeming qualities. He’s complicated but in his heart he’s a good person and that’s what all his actions tie back to.

Mystery Book Tour Day 20 #MysteryNovember Prime Deception by Carys Jones

November Mystery Tour

Welcome to Day 20 of the Mystery Book Tour.

Today Carys Jones joins us with her book Prime Deception.

Where is your home town?

My home town is Telford which is in Shropshire. It is in central England and pretty rural which is great for walking my beloved dog, Rollo.

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing full length novels since I was twenty three. Before that I used to write short horror stories and poems but never actually finished anything…

What is your favourite sub-genre of mystery?

I love romantic suspense. I think that love is a really powerful force which can drive people to sometimes do truly terrible things which is why romance works really well within the mystery genre.

Where is your book set?

Prime Deception is primarily set in London, England.

Introduce us to Lorna Thomas.

Lorna Thomas is a spirited and ambitious young woman. She lands an intern position within Downing Street in London and so leaves her family home, and her twin sister Laurie, to pursue her dream of a career in politics.

Did she have a close relationship with her twin sister?

Lorna and Laurie were inseparable growing up but once they entered adulthood they began to slowly drift apart. However, they retained a closeness which even Lorna’s untimely death couldn’t destroy.

Where does Laurie begin her investigating? Why doesn’t she leave it to the police?

Laurie begins her investigation by following in Lorna’s footsteps and joining the intern program at Downing Street. The police have already ruled that Laurie killed herself so Lorna can’t turn to them for help as she is acting on instinct alone. Somehow, she just knows that her twin didn’t commit suicide.

Do you need a good understanding of British politics to get the most from this book?

Not at all. The political environment is merely the backdrop to the story, the main focus is on the characters and how Lorna’s death and subsequent search for the truth impacts them differently.

Tell us what you are working on at the moment.

I’m currently writing the third book in my Avalon series. The first two books, First to Fall and Second to Cry are already published through CarinaUK.
