Sweet Reunion (Hope Falls, #1)Sweet Reunion by Melanie Shawn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Book Description:

For Amanda Jacobs, dealing with the pain of losing her beloved Dad is the toughest thing she’s ever gone through, and it comes with a lot of complications, as well – like taking over the family business, Mountain Ridge Outdoor Adventures. It makes her miss the simplicity of being a teenager, when she was surrounded by her amazing friends, The Fabulous Four, and she was madly in love with her Dad’s right hand man, Justin Barnes. His sexy smiles and deep brown eyes had made her heart race in a way she’s never felt before or since. When the Fabulous Four unexpectedly show up on her doorstep to support her through this complicated time, things seem to be looking up for Amanda. But that’s not the only surprise visit in store for her…

Justin Barnes left Hope Falls ten years ago, in the dead of night, and didn’t think he’d ever set foot there again. That was just fine with him, except for one little complication: Amanda Jacobs. He had fallen in love with her unruly blonde curls and sparkling sapphire eyes, but she had been a teenager then, five years younger than he – too young for him to act on his attraction. Still, he’d missed her every single day of those ten years. When Justin receives a phone call that his former mentor has passed away, he knows he has to return to Hope Falls. Justin just has one question – will the girl that once adored him have grown into a woman that can’t stand him? Or will she still be the only thing in the world that feels like home?

My Review:

Sweet Reunion is a sexy romance set in Hope Falls Northern California. Amanda Jacob’s father has recently died and she’s at a loss as to how to cope. Her three loyal childhood friends return to make up the Fabulous Four just when she needs their support for the reading of the will and the memorial service.

Justin Barnes is on his way back to Hope Falls too, he’s also been asked to arrive for the reading of the will. Ten years ago he left after seventeen year old Amanda declared her love for him. Believing it to be a teenage crush and a love which would never last Justine left overnight, breaking Amanda’s heart.

Now Parker Jacob’s has one last hope to make amends for his past actions, but has Amanda moved on? Could she ever start to trust a man who might once more be gone by morning?

This is book one of a series which will continue with romantic adventures for others who make up the Fabulous Four and is a feel good romantic read for those who like hot lovers and a happy ever after ending.

When They Build The Road You Want While You Wait #Travel #MondayBlogs

Last week I explained how there is much excitement in the Amber household as we plan next summer’s road-trip to Canada

Our plan is to fly to Calgary and over two weeks drive to Vancouver here are some of the highlights we’re looking at for our first couple of days: Calgary Tower , Fort Calgary , there is the famous Calgary Stampede which takes place July 7th – 16th and the  Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology near Drumheller

Meanwhile I’ve realised just how many other road trips we’ve done and I’m sharing them with you.

Last week was the 3000 mile trip to LA and back, all on the back of a packet of crisps, read the post here http://wp.me/p2Eu3u-9r6

This week is about the next trip to the west coast of America.

About a year after our trip to LA hubby and I (pre marriage and no kids) wanted to go back and see more of America, this time we flew into San Francisco and home from LA with a road- trip in between. We’re not huge city fans, so we jumped into our hire car and headed straight over the Golden Gate Bridge northwards, we were pleasantly surprised not to have to pay a toll, finding ourselves amongst rush hour traffic heading the right way out of the city.

First stop was the Napa valley region and a spot of wine tasting, interesting but when you’re driving and then flying home you can’t a) do too much tasting and b) bring too much wine home.

Next we drove almost to the Oregon border to the Redwood National Park , had a picture in front of  the giant “General Sherman” tree, but the park was very snowy and we hadn’t packed much cold weather clothing. Heading back down south we took the coastal road route 1 which hugged the rugged coastline, this was late Spring and there had been some ferocious storms, we’d been driving several hours and long past the last turnoff, when we were stopped by workmen. A landslide had knocked the road out and they were making a new one on the side of a very steep cliff, if we’d like to wait a while we could pass or turn around and go back. We decided to wait while they laid the shingle and graded and rolled it, then they waved us through, hubby asked what I could see down the drop off “absolutely nothing! Keep driving!”

We headed back to San Francisco for a spot of sight-seeing, and nearly got arrested for going down a closed road when we were lost, our saving grace was our accent and the fact hubby’s old style driving licence bamboozled the police officer. Think we went on a Twin Peaks trail, but I was still not speaking to hubby over the near arrest. Forgot about this until just now, I was dying for a pee when we were in the Bay area, found the public rest rooms, queued for ages crossing my legs only to discover non of the toilets had doors on them! I was so desperate by then, I had to forgo caring, assuming I was far enough away from home that I wouldn’t see anyone I knew. Then we headed down towards Bakersfield and the Sequoia National Park we do love our trees!

Passing through LA this time we decided to head to San Diego for a bit of sun, it had been snowy up in the Redwoods, the closer we got to the Mexican border the more security checks there were, we stopped just north of the city and next day went to the San Diego Sea World

A quick trip to Palm Springs, with an interesting drive through a dust storm. (Think we were ticking off nearly every weather condition on this trip) Palm Springs was lovely and warm in the city and then we took a cable car up the mountain to Mt San Jacinto State Park where it was snowing and we really hadn’t dressed appropriately again, at least we had booked dinner by the roaring log fire.

Lastly we high-tailed it back to LA, and fitted in The Universal Studio Hollywood Tour we sat in the Knight Rider car and tried to interact but it couldn’t understand our English accent, really enjoyed the studio tour, seeing characters from the latest Bat Man film at the time and seeing a well used pond feature in The Waltons and may more movies and TV series.

Guest Author Jamie Baywood

Today my guest on the blog is Jamie Baywood and her book Getting Rooted in New Zealand.

Jamie Baywood authorLet’s find out more about Jamie;

1) Where is your home town?

Petaluma, California.

2) You wrote your book from diary entries, have you always liked writing?

I didn’t start keeping a diary or writing until I moved to New Zealand. Getting Rooted in New Zealand is a collection of my emails, memories, and dairy entries. It seemed natural to organize the book in chronological order in dairy format.

3) Can you tell our readers what made you choose to go to New Zealand?

Growing up in California, it was always my dream to live abroad. I found a work abroad company that helped young Americans get work visas in New Zealand and Australia. I had been watching a lot of Flight of the Conchords at the time and enjoyed Bret and Jemaine’s sense of humour and accents.

I had bad dating experiences in California and read in a New Zealand tour book that the country’s population at 100,000 fewer men than women.  I wanted to have some me time and an adventure. New Zealand seemed like a good place to do so.

4) How long did you plan to initially stay in New Zealand?

I had a 12 month visa, but I literally had no plans.

5) What type of jobs did your work visa allow you to do? Would you like to see a change in this type of visa?

The visa I was on only permitted me to work temporary positions. This greatly limited my options.

As crazy as my job experiences were in New Zealand, I would actually like to return to New Zealand and give it another try working as a writer. It would be great to return to New Zealand to make Getting Rooted in New Zealand into a TV show.

6) I believe the cost of living shocked you, can you give us some examples?

It was mostly the cost of fresh produce at grocery stores like bell peppers and cucumbers were $5 each. It would have been ideal to have a garden and grow my own veggies.

7) Tell us about “Performing” stories from your adventures. Where did you perform them?

I was very lucky in New Zealand to meet a lot of talented people outside of work. I had the opportunity to write and perform for Thomas Sainsbury the most prolific playwright in New Zealand. I performed a monologue about my jobs in the Basement Theatre in Auckland.

The funny thing about that experience was Tom kept me separated from the other performers until it was time to perform. I was under the impression that all the performers were foreigners giving their experiences in New Zealand.  All of the other performers were professional actors telling stories that weren’t their own. At first I was mortified, but the audience seemed to enjoy my “performance,” laughing their way through my monologue. After the shows we would go out and mingle with the audience. People would ask me how long I had been acting. I would tell them, “I wasn’t acting; I have to go to work tomorrow and sit next to the girl wearing her dead dog’s collar.” No one believed I was telling the truth.

8) How did meeting Grant change your views on meeting men?

I’ve always loved men, too much in fact. I didn’t escape California because I hated men; I left because I was perplexed by how to date.  I had one boyfriend from the age of fourteen to twenty-three. There were a lot of life experiences and things I should have learned in high school and at university that I didn’t.  After my first relationship ended I felt like a zoo animal released into the wild. I had no idea how to date and for a few years was completed bombarded by unwanted suitors in California.

By the time I meet Grant at the age of twenty-seven, I had fulfilled my dream of living abroad, been single for over a year and felt healed from previous heartbreaks. Grant had been in a long term relationship since he was a teen as well. He was more clueless about dating than I was. I found comfort in our mutual awkwardness.  Grant was very different than the guys I dated in California. We spent the first couple months going on long walks and talking. It reminded me an old-fashion courtship. I knew very early into dating him that he would be my husband.

9) At the end of your book you were hoping to move to Scotland to find a college course, did this work out?

We didn’t stay in Scotland to study as planned. For unwanted complicated reasons, we had to move to England to study.  I have just completed a one year MA in Design. Designing my book cover was my dissertation project.  Grant is in middle of a two year MA in Landscape Architecture he will be done in 2014. We plan to move when his course is completed.

10) I know you a had a sneak look on the internet at holding a wedding in a Scottish Castle, did you fulfil this dream?

We got married in a little castle in Scotland at the beginning of year 2012. My husband wore a kilt. I was hoping for a white winter wedding, but we ended up getting sunshine in Scotland during the winter. It was a magical day; we had a rainbow over a loch, bunny rabbits hoping by us, birds chirping and a full moon reflecting on the loch at night.

Getting Rooted in New ZealandGetting Rooted in New Zealand book description:
Craving change and lacking logic, at 26, Jamie, a cute and quirky Californian, impulsively moves to New Zealand to avoid dating after reading that the country’s population has 100,000 fewer men. In her journal, she captures a hysterically honest look at herself, her past and her new wonderfully weird world filled with curious characters and slapstick situations in unbelievably bizarre jobs. It takes a zany jaunt to the end of the Earth and a serendipitous meeting with a fellow traveler before Jamie learns what it really means to get rooted.
About the author Jamie Baywood:

I like to write something with a good mix of romance and adventure.

5)Pass on 3 tips about writing or publishing.

1- Never give up.  The only one who can prevent your words from reaching readers is you.

2-Pace yourself.  If all goes well, you’ll be doing this for decades to come so don’t freak out if things aren’t happening as fast as you would like them to.

3- Learn the business side of writing but keep it in its place.

6)What was the last book that you read? How would you rate it?

I just finished the Dumfries Detective Trilogy by RR Gall.  It is a collection of detective stories set in Scotland and I gave the first two a four star rating and the last one five stars.  They are great detective stories that kept me guessing until the very end.

Land of the Unaltered by Leti Del Mar

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I was lucky enough to receive an advanced review copy of this book from the author and was delighted to read the story. A young adult romance set in a futuristic world where there is a liking to have repeated medical alterations. However there are people who don’t want the high life of the city, Rose goes to live with her aunt to escape the world that her parents live in. She meets Flynn, but he refuses to be friendly. A romance blossoms, but what will become of their future? A great story with the promise of its continuation in the next book.

Dark Horse by J.R.Rain

Dark Horse (Jim Knighthorse, #1)Dark Horse by J.R. Rain

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A detective story with humour, a loveable arrogant main man, a mysterious fellow who could have been God or just a wise man? Set in sunny LA, we’ve just had our first fall of snow this year, so the warm Californian air appeals to me greatly this morning! The American football theme got on my nerves a little, but that’s just a female reader talking! It helped set the characters off. There are more books in the series too.
