Remnants of Evil (McAllister Justice Series Book 6)Remnants of Evil by Reily Garrett

4 stars

Remnants Of Evil is book six in the McAllister Justice series of romantic suspense novels. Although stand alones, there are always themes running through, so I would suggest reading the series in order to get the most from the experience.

Abby McAllister is a lawyer and the sister to five brothers who are all connected to law enforcement.

So far each family member has had their own thriller style adventure; now it is Abby’s turn. A recent kidnapping left Abby severely shaken. The culprit is safely behind bars, but can he still reach her?

Nowhere seems safe as Abby’s police officer boyfriend and her family try to find who is currently targeting Abby, and why.

In a tense build-up with multiple red herrings, Abby struggles to balance her independence with her safety as attacks turn relentless. I’ve been a fan of this series from the beginning and have always happily agreed to read the next book, which says a lot for this author’s writing. However, although still good, this book was my least favourite of the whole series. Perhaps it was because I was expecting additional suspense with twists and an extra edgy feel for the last McAllister sibling’s tale, whereas the author took the story on a more romantic trail, especially for the ending.

Overall an acceptable finale to the series, it just wasn’t quite was I was hoping for.

Rosie’s #Bookreview of #RomanticSuspense Carbon Replacements by @reily_garrett

Carbon Replacements (The McAllister Justice Series #4)Carbon Replacements by Reily Garrett

4 stars

Carbon Replacements is book #4 of the McAllister justice action adventure series. All the books are set in and around Portland, Oregon.

Remie is a medical examiner and has recently moved back to her home state. The book opens with a brutal attack on her and two students. When police officer Billy McAllister and his partner are called to the remote crime scene, it’s Billy who rescues Remie and agrees to guard her in hospital.

After Remie regains consciousness, she’s horrified when she recognises specific lumbar puncture wounds on her body. They indicate that very unusual blood and tissue samples were taken from her, probably by the attacker. This shocking piece of evidence has Billy and his brothers worried; only a few months ago they’d been caught up in unlawful human genetic experiments. Could Billy’s nightmare experience be coming back? To this end, the McAllister family, once more, put all their resources together to discover the truth.

This fast-paced story is filled with twists and advanced scientific research. The case digs deeply into biofabrication, or the generation of human tissue from sample cells. There’s a link to the previous book in the series and anyone reading these books would certainly benefit from starting with book one. As the series advances the McAllister family grows with new partners each bringing useful skills to the investigations. Amongst them are: a strict lawyer, a skilled computer hacker, private investigators, a vet and several different police force members. Added to this, each book has delightful animal characters to tick boxes with fans of furry friends. But this isn’t just a suspense story, there’s romance too for an extra layer of tension. Recommended to readers who enjoy romantic suspense.

Discovering the new medical examiner unconscious at the scene of a grisly murder forces him to unite with his brothers against a world of chaos where reality shifts according to a psychopath’s desire.

My #BookReview of #RomanticSuspense Bound By Shadows by @reily_garrett

Bound By Shadows (McAllister Justice, #2)Bound By Shadows by Reily Garrett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bound By Shadows is book #2 of the McAllister Justice romantic suspense books.

Kaylee Tate recently moved to Portland. She wakes-up in a cage, finding herself a victim of a kidnapping. The last thing she can remember is sitting in a café. Her head is fuzzy with the drugs she must have been given.

The cage is underground and Kaylee is not alone; another girl urges her to wake-up. Taking her one chance of escape, Kaylee promises she’ll send help as she runs off into a dark tunnel. Realising that she’s in Portland’s famous underground tunnel system, Kaylee hopes her kidnappers won’t find her.

When Kaylee walks into a police station, she meets members of the McAllister family, brothers who are either policemen or are connected to policing. Kaylee is relieved to see these friendly faces that she knew from her school days. It’s Caden who takes Kaylee to hospital while his brothers launch a search and rescue operation for the other girl.

They discover clues of a possible sex trafficking ring, but the girl and the cages are gone and, as a witness, Kaylee is still vulnerable. Whilst protecting Kaylee, Caden faces some of his own fears and the pair find a deep mutual bond. The tension builds through-out the story to an exciting and satisfying ending.

I enjoyed the mix of suspense and romance. Characters from book #1 return and the cameraderie and banter between the McAllister brothers was fun. I will look forward to further adventures and romance from more books in the series.

Book description

The architect of fear employs many forms.

Kidnapping and murder never crossed Kaylee’s mind when seeking a fresh start in Portland, a new beginning to shed the remnants of tragedy dogging her steps. After escaping from an underground cage, she fights to stay one step ahead of the killer bent on silencing his only witness. Kaylee.
Two months after dodging a sociopathic murderer’s best efforts, Caden McAllister flounders within a social sink hole, unable to move forward, too stubborn to step back. Guarded and wary, the private investigator’s stagnant lifestyle detonates into chaos when a battered and bloody young waif stumbles into his care.
Framed for a murdering a past lover, Caden must clear his name and overcome his charge’s doubts while keeping her out of the sex-slave trade. When betrayal ends with Kaylee’s re-capture, Caden must conquer his past and risk all or lose the one he has come to love.
Murder, mystery, underground tunnels, and romance are intertwined in this standalone romantic thriller, the second installment of the McAllister Justice Series.
