Come Back to the Ballpark, Maisy Gray (Comeback Romance Series Book 1)Come Back to the Ballpark, Maisy Gray by Cynthia Tennent

4 stars

Come Back To The Ballpark, Maisy Gray is a romantic comedy set in Indianapolis. The story revolves around Maisy who is seen as a lucky charm for a baseball team. Maisy had previously been the girlfriend of star pitcher Kevin Halderman, but he broke her heart when he dumped her for a supermodel. Maisy immediately left and the team have been struggling ever since.

Now, a few years later, Maisy returns to the baseball game whilst on a school trip. A last minute player change has Kevin pitching once more. When cameras spot Maisy in the audience, her face appears on the big screen and the team, coincidentally, win the match. Fans and the media become very vocal in their demands to have Maisy back for every game, believing that she is the reason for the win. But Maisy has moved on with her life. However, trying to say no to those who want her back is hard. Can she prove that she’s not the lucky charm they all believe her to be?

This was a fun story. I don’t know much about baseball, but the romance and the comedy were the primary themes. Maisy is an inspiring school-teacher in a small-town. She meets the current team manager in a bar and they both bond with a desire to turn the TV channel away from the re-runs of the recent team win. Sam Hunter’s plans to trade Kevin have just been sent awry by Kevin’s surprising performance. Sam has no time for superstition from the fans or the players, but team owner Mr Zumaeta has big designs for Maisy, and he orders Sam to bring her back.

I liked Maisy and Sam, they were well-written characters. Maisy’s say-it-as-you-see-it attitude added to the comedy. There were some good secondary characters too: Zoom, the team owner and Maisy’s mum. I also enjoyed the opposites of statistics and superstition and their roles in a team’s sporting performance. This is the second book I’ve read from the author and I would be happy to read more.

Book description

Come Back to the Ballpark, Maisy Gray is a romantic comedy about a reluctant woman who is a baseball team’s lucky charm and the man who must get her back in the game…

Maisy Gray is no one’s lucky charm. As far as she’s concerned her low down spineless cheating ex-fiancée and his team can rot in last place forever. Of all the stupid days to return to the ballpark, she manages to do it the very day her ex pitches a no-hitter.
“Maisy’s back!” The newspaper headline credits the miracle on the mound to the return of the lucky girl who was once a fixture in the stands. Now, frenzied Turbos fans want Maisy to sprinkle her magic pixie dust over their team again.

Turbos General Manager, Sam Hunter, doesn’t believe in superstition. But he likes his job, so he agrees to his boss’s stupid plan to get the pretty rabbit’s foot back to the stands. He’ll seduce Maisy, reunite her with her ex, offer money, and do whatever it takes to win. It should be easy. Except it’s not. And when the seduction part of the plan backfires, it’s not just the season that’s at stake. It’s Sam’s heart.
