The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey

There is so much to love about this series it’s hard to list them all here! The books read almost like a fantasy, but their core is science fiction. The dragons are amazing – intelligent, loyal, and bound eternally to their chosen partner. Each dragon manages to have a personality that perfectly compliments his/her rider – making them just as enticing as the human characters throughout the series. The books are stocked full of every type of character imaginable – the proud, honorable dragonriders and the not-so-honorable ones, the scheming Lord who wants to rule the world and the good Lords who stand against him, the disbelievers who almost bring about the end of the world despite having irrefutable proof they are wrong … Many characters show up repeatedly throughout the series, and it’s wonderful how you get to see differing sides of their personalities as the story progresses. The world itself also captivates my imagination, it’s so richly developed and researched. Imagine a semi-feudal society with no massive sprawling cities, no technology (or very minimal, at least), no pollution … after all, why would you want a car when you could ride a dragon?  Have you ever been asked what fictional world you’d live in? This one is mine.
