4 stars

A Romp With The Georgians is a fun easy to read collection packed full of facts and stories from the period of English history between 1714 – 1830. Written by BBC TV Antiques presenter David Harper it shines with his passion for the era. The time period covers the reigns of Georges I-IV, and there is an informative section about each of them at the end of the book.

David Harper gives us the chance to get to know the people of England, from their fashions in make-up, hair and clothing, to their modes of transport, food, occupations and beyond, to sayings originating from that period that remain in use today. I particularly enjoyed the section about furniture and the three designers who still influence home furnishings in modern times: Hepplewhite, Sheraton and Chippendale.

I read a paperback copy; the glossy pages were interspersed with colourful cartoons and illustrations, three drawn by Harper himself. This would make an ideal gift or coffee-table book for history buffs and fans of the Georgian period.
