Last Saturday I went on the long awaited trip to Longstock Water Gardens. These are situated on the River Test near Stockbridge and are the creation of retailer John Spedan Lewis of John Lewis and Waitrose fame. Keen to create the gardens he had a phone line put in to the thatched summer house so that he could still be on hand to run his empire while creating his gardens. There is a good article from Dan Copper about the gardens here (Opening times and prices are now different, as Dan visited in June 2013) See here for current rates and opening hours.
Due to personal circumstances we visited on the last open weekend of the season and I would say that many of the floral displays were finished. A visit in Spring or Summer would be my suggestion.
Lewis diverted the river and created islands within the gardens which can be reached by small bridges. There were dahlias and lilies, verbena and more still in flower. I’m afraid that some of the plants I didn’t know the names of and couldn’t find the relevant name tags.
I don’t know what these were, the label that I photographed beside them turned out to be for a yellow variety of tick weed, which wasn’t flowering at this time of the year. (Alison has identified these as Liriope muscari)
A pretty palm or banana with dahlias growing underneath. (Jim says this is an Ensete maurelii or Ethiopian false banana)
There were plenty of cyclamen around the gardens.
Not sure what these were, but there were also some creamy ones.(And Jim knows what this one is too – an Astrantia)
A short drive or walk from the gardens is Longstock Park Nursery set in a walled garden, with tea rooms and a small farm shop, all worth a visit. Another good article about the gardens can be found here on The Garden Visitor Website.
Thank you for joining me for this #SixOnSaturday post. I hope that you enjoyed it. Jim is now our host for this gardening meme and you can find his blog here where you will be able to catch up with links from all the other folks who take part.
Happy gardening
Rosie

I’m glad you managed to get to visit the gardens in the end. They look lovely in the autumnal phase. I sometimes mutter a bit when these big places don’t label a plant I really like. Then I remember I don’t label anything in mine, other than pots, and let them off.

I reckon it’s time Sue and I went on a drive around England, people keep posting about lovely gardens I’ve never seen. Ensete maurelii and Astrantia (possibly ‘Roma’) are a couple of the unidentified plants. I get very cross when I can’t find labels on plants, unreasonably so.

Thank you Jim. Yes a holiday should be planned I think.

I’ll forewarn James at The Palace Gardens in Wells, that you are coming. They started to label some of the plants as I started cataloguing their Pelargonium collection, but not all are labelled by all means. They are working on a database that can be accessed by visitors, but it is well worth visiting any way.

There’s quite a bit to see there if you go in the summer season. Lovely and cook by the stream I would think, on a hot day.

Those are some great pictures Rosie. I do love a good stance of bamboo, of course they fit beautifully in large gardens.

What beautiful gardens, I can imagine them being full of color in the spring. I love that he made little islands with bridges. Beautiful photo’s Rosie.

I think a return visit is definitely in order. The gardens look lovely but you need to head there in late spring!

I hadn’t heard of this garden before, and love the mental image of him running his retail chain from the Summer House while doing some deadheading.

I’m sure it helped relieve some of the stresses if he could look out at his garden while dealing with business.

The autumnal soft light says peace and contemplation, Rosie. I love going to places when all the usual crowd, including plants, has packed up and gone home. The bamboo makes a stunning feature.

You’re right, it was very peaceful, a few visitors were just sitting and watching the world go by along the little stream.

It might be late in the season but your photos show plenty of colour and interesting plants. I didn’t know that about John Lewis.

I have astrantia Roma here too, but it’s not as pink as that, possibly mine has been diluted by cross pollination. That one is a lovely colour. It looks like a great garden to have visited. And very helpful to hear that there is a nursery nearby!
