Forces: In Search of Power is book two of the young adult urban fantasy Kinetics Sequence series.
This story continues on from book one, and they should be read in order. I read book one six years ago and I would have loved a short recap of the story so far, as I found it hard to remember much about the initial story.
The tale takes place here on Earth and revolves around a war between various factions; most of them have Kinetic powers. Fifteen-year-old Eugene remains one of the main characters, but we also have some alternating chapters from others. Willow played a major role in book one and continues with her own journey here when she agrees to become a host for an alien.
Eugene too is a host; he carries the voice of an alien who helps and advises him. After book one Eugene was taken to an isolated place by Marcus to heal, rest and to learn how to control his kinetic power. Marcus should be his enemy but he gave Eugene space to learn more about the war and time to make his own decisions about wrong or right.
There was a lot going on in this book and plenty of characters to keep up with. I liked Lian, a young child with some unusual talents, who was one of my favourites; I did, however, struggle to keep them all in perspective while following the story. The style of the narrative made me think of comic book heroes or video style gaming scenarios. I liked reading about Eugene and his Kinetic powers, but was less interested in some of the alternating chapters. Much of the ending was left open ready for the next book and I cannot start to guess where some of the storylines are heading.
Overall, an okay read, but I felt that some of the excitement and pace from book one had run out of steam during the writing of this book.

Eugene has traveled across the United States and nothing went as expected. Now he’s stuck in China with a mentor he never asked for. Learning his powers, the conflicts ahead of him, and who he is are more important than he knows.
Willow has come out the other side but now she feels more alone than ever before. She’s a target, on the run, and trying to figure out what to do next. It’s only with the help of a new friend that she’ll be able to navigate new world opening before her.
Harry, Jack, Roy, and Logan are off trying to find Laura but nothing is certain and they might be opening a can of worms they aren’t ready to handle.
The war between the Anyan’s Alliance and Isiroan Legion is heating up and no one is prepared for what that means. There are forces at play in the world and Eugene, Willow, and the others are on paths to becoming leaders of a new generation.
