Shark Bait is an action adventure thriller set in the UK. John Steel is a government hitman, a licensed vigilante. His latest commission is to take down the Carlucci drug barons and find the location of their drugs lab.
The book opens with the following line:
‘The worst time to get pulled over by the cops is when you have a body in the boot.’
It had me hooked and Steele’s evening was about to get worse. After dealing with the cop, a man stumbled in front of his car. Steele’s decision to help and the consequences of this action got him mixed up with a local loan shark. Instead of quietly leaving the area after completing his assignment, he became a beacon to people who wanted him dead.
I liked this author’s writing style, it was compact and to the point which kept the pace moving briskly making it engaging and drawing me in. Chapters were told from alternating points of view from Steele and loan shark Gary Brooker. Background elements were drip fed through a sprinkling of flashbacks which, unlike some that often feel like fillers, had me hungry to read on. I also liked the clever use of the fourth wall technique, those asides felt like I was sharing secrets about Steele’s life. Overall a good example of the book in this genre and one I would be happy to recommend.
