Would You BUY or PASS? #FridayFiveChallenge Tea Time For The Traditionally Built @McCallSmith

Welcome to my Friday Five Challenge

Mug 1

Get yourself a cuppa and give yourself 5 minutes.

In today’s online shopping age, readers often base their buying decisions from small postage stamp size book covers (Thumb-nails), a quick glance at the book description and the review. How much time do they really spend making that buying decision?

AUTHORS – You often only have seconds to get a reader to buy your book, is your book cover and book bio up to it?

My Friday Five Challenge is this….. IN ONLY FIVE MINUTES….

1) Go to any online book supplier,

2) Randomly choose a category,

3) Speed through the book covers, choose one which has instantly appealed to your eye,

4) Read the book Bio/ Description for this book,

5) If there are reviews, check out a couple,

6) Make an instant decision, would you BUY or PASS?

(then write a little analysis about your decision)

This week whilst drinking my cup of tea, I found my search term “Tea”!

Book Description

It is a troublesome fact on which even Mma Ramotswe and her assistant Mma Makutsi agree: there are things that men know and ladies do not, and vice versa. It is unfortunate, for example, when Mma Ramotswe’s newest client is the big-shot owner of the ailing Kalahari Swoopers, that one thing lady detectives know very little about is football. And when the glamorous Violet Sephotho sets her sights on Mma Makutsi’s unsuspecting fiancé, it becomes exasperatingly clear that some men do not know how to recognise a ruthless Jezebel even when she is bouncing up and down on the best bed in the Double Comfort Furniture Shop.

In her attempt to foster understanding between the sexes and find the traitor on Mr Football’s team, Mma Ramotswe ventures into new territory, drinks tea in unfamiliar kitchens and learns to trust in the observational powers of small boys. And, as wise and warm-hearted as his heroine, Alexander McCall Smith reminds us that we must dig deep to uncover the goodness of the human heart.

Analysis

Just look at all those tin mugs and the African setting behind them. What grabbed me the most though was the fact that as soon as I spotted the cover I spotted the author and the No. 1 Detective agency Ladies. I have seen books in this series at my library when I’ve staggered past with an armful of books to check out and couldn’t fit any more on my loan ticket. I’ve never got around to reading one, so this is just the chance for me. It is no. 10 in the series, but they have a good reputation, I like an African tale and what better way to read it than to sit down with a lively cup of tea.

  1. I keep meaning to have a go at this brilliant quest, and as soon as I’ve cleared my hideous backlog I’m definitely going to! Love the sound of this book – like you, I’ve never got around to reading any of this series but I have heard some of it dramatised on Radio 4 and I loved it! 🙂 Thanks for another great post x

  4. I absolutely love the Ladies Detective Agency series and would thoroughly recommend them. They’re gently humorous, atmospheric and wise. Looks like like I’m the opposite of Liz – I tried a couple of the Scotland Street ones and wasn’t too keen on those!

  6. I bought the whole series for my mother a while ago now and have read a couple of them – thoroughly enjoyable so I’d definitely recommend although I wouldn’t buy purely because I know where there’s a whole set whenever I need it!! 🙂

  7. Hi Rosie – love the connection of the mug of tea – and some wise words … especially by the tiny Tim lad … McCall Smith has great ideas to introducing people to Botswana and the way of life … cheers Hilary

  8. I found this series by hunting for books about Africa on B&N.com, and have now read all the No. 1 Ladies and Isabel Dalhousie series, which I think are the two best of his series. After a while, I abandoned the Scotland Street series. Corduroy Mansions is a good read. But No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency has more breadth and depth than any of his other work. The covers are very good for this series, too.
