Welcome to Day 1 of this two week Beach Reads Blog Tour.

With a heat wave forecast for this week, here in the UK, what better way to start this tour.

Come pull up a deck chair the view is great….we’ll take you on a virtual holiday of books.

Each day we’ll be hearing from  a guest telling us about their 5  chosen Beach Read books for 2015.

I’m kicking off the tour with my own holiday reads to share with you all.

My favourite destination would be an easy to get to British Beach with a pre-order of sunshine and warmth. I’m not a fan of a long stressful journey. So I might choose an out of the way spot in Dorset, Devon or Cornwall unless I could have a tailor made holiday with door to door private pick-up, priority through the airport, private staffed villa and private beach which I can arrive at all cool calm and collected.

While I’m digging my toes in the sand and soaking up the warmth wherever I may be, what shall I be reading?

My first choice is Sunrise by J.F Crane  based on the TV series Stargate – “When a Stargate malfunction throws Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell, Dr. Daniel Jackson, Lt. Colonel Sam Carter, and Teal’c back in time, they only have minutes to live.”
I love that this is a thin paperback and I would start this on my holiday journey, it will easily slip into my hand luggage. I’ve only recently discovered these books and that one of my favourite TV series can now be read too is really exciting. It’s not a genre I usually read and I’m looking forward to meeting SG1 all over again. I know I’ll also pass it on to my husband afterwards. Find a copy here from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com

My second choice is African Me & Satellite TV by Jo Robinson this book I’ve been meaning to read for ages. I previously bought it as a paperback gift for a friend, but I think I’d read it as an e-book on my Kindle. “Suzette manages very well to live her life without actually taking part in it. She avoids any possibility of pain by very carefully ignoring reality.” I like books about Africa there’s something about the age and knowledge of the continent that pulls me in and this book is highly recommended. My third choice is Your Handwriting Can Change Your Life by Vimala Rodgers. This will be my easy read book, I’ll have this in paperback because I want to flip back and forth through it. I have handwriting which I’d like to improve and what better way than when I  have the time to practise the letters each day whilst I’m free from work and daily life. “When we purposefully change our handwriting, we introduce attitudes that can improve our relationships, give us the impetus to achieve and take risks, and simply bring out the best in us.” Find a copy here from Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com

I’m a big Nora Roberts fan, so this will be my next choice, Dark Witch by Nora Roberts is a book from one of my favourite genres, this book encompasses Ireland with a paranormal romance. I’ll read this in paperback so I can pass it on to my friends when I’ve finished as they also like Nora Roberts. “With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends.” Can’t wait to read this. My final choice is this book,  I Can Do It by Louise L Hay This is my self-help book to help me return from my holiday full of the mojo to get on with my life. I would buy the hardback copy because it comes with a CD for audio listening as well. “change and improve virtually every aspect of your life—by understanding and using affirmations correctly.” I’m always looking for ways to improve my life experience and this is the book for me, it’s up-lifting and positive and just the thing to set in motion whilst away, ready for my return home.

  1. We haven’t got round to reading the Stargate books, but I’m sure we will. At the moment we’re hooked on watching Stargate Atlantis. Great to have the books available.

  3. Good morning ~ and you’ve made me long to be in a quiet spot by the sea in Devon or Cornwall now! We have completely different reading tastes, but the handwriting one is an interesting choice; in that book Future Perfect that you passed on to me, it was 170 years in the future and handwriting had all but died out. People communicated by so many different ways it just wasn’t needed – I thought that was one of the saddest bits of the book! I’ve always written like a mad spider, even before computer days! 😀 😀

  4. A great start to the tour Rosie and I am particularly drawn to African Me and Satellite TV from your choices – I seem to remember seeing some really good reviews on this a while back and it’s on my to read list! Love the sound of your holiday destinations too! 🙂

    • Thanks Georgia, I have travelled, but now with the rising costs, and stress of travel, I just want to relax and am becoming a home bunny. Can’t wait to read Africa me….

  6. I love your choices. The handwriting book sounds interesting and I’m a huge fan of Louise Hay so that’s an automatic fav. I haven’t read sci-Fi for ages so I think this would be a great genre to revisit. Thanks Rosie and happy holidays 😎

  8. Great start, Rosie. I’m taking you at your word that sunny weather is on its way as I am in windblown service station south of Glasgow and on my way to Oban. I might give the Nora Roberts a look as I’ve tried a couple of books written by her but never got past half way . I’ve just finished the latest Barbara Erskine and have a couple of ROM Coms with me. Enjoyed the Erskindd but I thought having two characters with very similar names are bit of a mistake : Eddie/Evie.

    • Oban, Lizzie! I went there a few years ago, lovely town! As for the names, I recently read a book with main characters called Axl, Al, Angus, and Annie… 😀

      • What? Come on authors help out the readers, we have to picture characters in our minds, please give them names from some of the other letters of the alphabet – too many people start at A, B and C. Why not check out from N onwards?

    • Hi Kimberley, I thought we all deserved a bit of a holiday and what better way than through books. I came across Stargate years ago when Hubby and I visited NY and took pot luck in a cinema for the afternoon. We saw the opening film version which led to the later popular TV Sci-fi series.

  11. Great blog to kick off the tour, team! Fascinated by handwriting, actually picked up an ancient tome on it in an antique shop yesterday! Had mine analysed years ago, apparently my signature is reminiscent of Catherine the Great – who knew? My choice would be Dark Witch by Nora Roberts too. Being Irish I would enjoy her perspective, and as she is the best selling novelist on the planet, I’m sure I would enjoy the story!

  12. The handwriting book intrigues me as my handwriting has changed to chicken scratch because I don’t write by hand anymore. As well, I have some arthritis, which doesn’t help. On my last holiday, I took copious notes and in the beginning I could hardly read them. A week later, my handwriting improved and by the end it was actually neat. Maybe that’s because I had to take my time, be careful with my pen holding. I wonder what this book might tell me. 💡

    • I’ve started reading it and it looks at your bad letter formation and how it connects to who you are, then it shows you what can change in your life from giving the letters lots of lovely curves and curls. I know when I rush, my writing is at its worst and unreadable which is silly because I’m not writing timed essays any more, I can take time, I have been lazy in my past.

  13. Hi Rosie .. I’m going to cream through a few books I’ve got here – but the African one sounds interesting … having lived there I’m always drawn. I saw a Clive Cussler book “Skeleton Coast” (Namibia) when I was in a pub the other day – the Church got a donation and I brought the book home, and I’ve a friend who’ll enjoy it .. and the Hospice will benefit then …

    Handwriting that’s a sore point .. I might look at that! Interesting choices … and I’ll go to Cornwall for my beach read, turn the clock back a few decades … fewer people and I can read in peace … cheers Hilary

    • Apparently it’s a tried and tested formula and the author even has a font made of the letters to use whilst typing, but it’s not on my word list of fonts. Some are quite artistic.
