Day 26 April A to Z Challenge my theme is characters from books I’ve read plus some audience participation.

Yesterday’s News is a fun cosy mystery with a couple of great ghosts. Anna Yesterday owns an antique shop in small town Crocker Indiana. Two resident ghosts are linked with the shop and their dialogue is superb. Language from yester-year with a full glossary of words at the beginning make their colloquialisms amply fit their characters. For instance;

“The boy’s a grafter. He’ll hornswoggle ya faster’n I can spit tobacco into that pan over there”

The storyline follows the discovery of an old newspaper story, which has been covered up by the townsfolk and when Anna begins some sleuthing to find out the truth she upsets more than one local. It’s not just the ghosts that appealed to me, there is Pierce an autistic young man and I was rather taken by Mrs Baker’s fierce family loyalty and hard working beliefs.

With the help of ex-cop Pratt Davies, Anna digs deep into Crocker’s past and exposes a dirty tale that many would rather forget. A well written story which left me smiling, sign me up for more.

A book title and cover picture can often make or break a book sale. Is a book cover eye-catching? Does the book title appeal to the reader?

    Zebedee, and enterprising young zebra, shows how he changes his basic form to fool passing hunters desperate to rob him of his hide.

    • You’ll have to nip down to London and the Warner Bros. Harry Potter studio tour. This is “Lily & James Potter’s house at Godric’s Hollow” I had to take my own pics as those with the posh cameras in the family all forgot theirs!

      • Oh, what a shame, it’s not real! I went to Alnick Castle, up here, where Hogwarts was filmed, and it was a real rip off. Lovely place, tho! I’d love to have done that tour, tho!

      • I recognised the house as soon as I saw it 🙂 The studio tour was amazing. Terry – if you love tudor houses, you should take a road trip to Lavenham, Suffolk, where parts of Godrick’s Hollow were filmed. Some reports say that the Potter house was based on the Guildhall there, although I couldn’t see it myself. Also the village of Lacock, Whiltshire was featured in the 6th film as the village where Slughorn was hiding out (and has also been in several other films/TV shows – stunning period style village), and the Abby was used for some of the classrooms in the first two films. (I may be slightly obsessed with the HP films/books and the filming locations!)

      • Hi Ros, I love Harry Potter, so thanks for all the film location mentions, I’d love to go to the studio tour again, the kids wouldn’t let me line up for a turn on the broomsticks and now they have platform 9 3/4, I could let out the kid inside of me again.

  10. Zealous Tudor Lovers – a glossy coffee table book charting the lengths some will go to in pursuit of their passion, the front cover depicts a particularly challenging renovation project undertaken by a couple more usually found dressing as Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn… 🙂

The house looks haunted to me, so I;d called it Ze ‘Ouse on ‘Aunted ‘Ill. Hm, think I’ll stick to writing novels, not blog posts.

Hi Rosie – loved the sound of this book ‘ Yesterday’s News’ .. sounds very appealing .. while I don’t think I can beat the drunk zebra house … but I guess another could be why don’t you put your contacts in – then the lines won’t appear wavy and you might be able to distinguish between black and white.

    The Guildhall in Lavenham is a brilliant venue to visit .. those buildings are amazing – and it’s all real up there .. .well done Rosie – it’s been a pleasure to be around … cheers and see you soon – Hilary
