Day 4 of my April A to Z Challenge, my theme is characters from books I’ve read, plus an audience participation piece.

Letter D is for Dermot Finnegan from Secrets Of The Heart by Adrienne Vaughan.

Secrets Of The Heart is book three of The Heartfelt series, easily a stand alone novel, also a grand finale to the series. Set on a tiny island off of the west coast of Ireland, it has all the charm of Ireland and with a host of characters from movie stars to a flamboyant Post Mistress and a delightful West Highland Terrier called Monty.

Marianne Coltrane, once an adopted child, is now a grown woman, re-acquainted with her parents, who have just re-kindled their love. Soon after the honeymooners return, the island is attacked by a vicious storm which sets back the building of a bridge to the mainland. With no financial help from the government available, the islanders take it upon themselves to raise much needed funds.

There are plenty of willing helpers as famous people fly in from all over the world to buy a little piece of Ireland and help the cause, but lots of people have secrets on the island and there’s more than one that weaves it’s way to the surface with a little help from the Irish magic of Innishmahon. A magic which pulls people to the island much to the disgust of local resident Sean Grogan. I’ve really enjoyed all three books in this series and hope there’s more to come.

  2. Thanks so much for hosting myself and the delightful Dermot on your blog Rosie. Dermot is typical of my heroes in that he appears confident and successful, yet scratch below the surface and there’s someone desperately seeking their other half, if he would only admit it. It all works out for him in the end though, but what a roller coaster to get there, eh?

    Title for that lovely picture, The Black Thief. A children’s story about a creature who is ostracised as a freak of nature, yet wins everyone round with one ‘super-squirrel’ act of heroism! (Am enjoying your brain stretching game, Rosie, very clever)

  10. All 3 of Adrienne’s Heartfelt series are an enthralling read. You can’t help but become immersed in all the shenanigans on the mythical island of Innismahon and Dermot is yet another great character among many.
    Title: Dark Phantom –
    He looks sinister but in his story he’ a force for good.

  11. Love this series – great characters are a real strength and highlight of Adrienne’s books. Loving the book titles though have terrible mind blankness when it comes to thinking up any myself 🙂

  13. Thanks for the link to my A to Z, Lot of books here that I haven’t read, starting at A – love a good Western. And because I like dark mysteries, how about “Shadow of the Squirrel”. (The squirrel kills the butler – or should it be the cook?)

  19. These books sound wonderful – will tuck away the suggestion. As for a title:
    Even Squirrels Deserve a Break.
    It’s a black squirrel – rather rare around here, but there was a single family of them when I lived in Evanston, Il, which found my apple tree enticing. I would see them scampering down the sidewalk, sometimes a mile or so from my house, with one of my apples in their mouths.

  22. Sure and I loved Dermot in Adrienne’s books. Who wouldn’t? Ex- Garda, gorgeous and not afraid to help out a friend in need. If you like multi-layered, multi-generation romantic adventure, then check out Adrienne’s trilogy. As for the squirrel, I’m plagued with the blasted things . . . so my title for the book would be The Secret Squirrel Cookery Book.

    • Hi Sonya, this is the third book in a trilogy from Adrienne, based around a fictional Irish island and it’s people, I’ve enjoyed the whole series and would love the island to be real enough to visit.
