The Inheritance by Elaine Jeramiah

There are all the elements of a really good novel in ‘The Inheritance’, fantastic settings in London and Cornwall, potentially intriguing characters – Kate, devoted to the family farm, and her sister Emma, who feels trapped and escapes to London, and the mystery of what really happened to their mother and to Kate’s one and only love, Steven.

There are also moments when the writing works beautifully and you are really drawn in. However, there were also times when the writing was clunky and awkward and when the plot didn’t quite ring true. I won’t go into too much detail for fear of spoilers, but the mystery surrounding Steven just didn’t seem believable and was wrapped up far too neatly. Also, the way some of the characters spoke, particularly when discussing London, seemed unrealistic. I was also unconvinced by some of the side characters. Would a man on a train really tell you all his personal business after sharing five minutes conversation?

Having said that, this book has great potential. There are just a few things that I felt needed a bit more work to make this the great story that it really could be.
