Valley of Nightmares – Jane Godman
There was a lot to like in this book. Lily Devine is a warm and empathetic heroine, who certainly held my attention as she made her way from her risqué London lifestyle to the life of a governess in the dark, gothic setting of the Welsh mountains. Gethin Taran is an enigmatic and appealing leading man, and there are plenty of twists and turns and surprises to keep you on your toes in this compelling read, as Lily finds out more about her own powers and discovers the truth behind the strange figure that stalks her in her dreams.
My only issue was with the amount of description. I do love to feel a sense of place and time when I am reading, and Jane Godman certainly does this very well. And I do appreciate that building an atmosphere is a vital component of a Gothic novel. However, I did feel at times that the imagery and description was rather overdone and detracted from the story – I found myself occasionally skipping over parts of the narrative to get to some action.
That aside, this was a really good read, and I’ll certainly be looking out for more books by Jane Godman.
4 out of 5 stars.
